The VA Aid and Attendance benefit can help defray the cost of assisted living for surviving spouses of veterans. The maximum annual pension rate (MAPR) for a surviving spouse with no dependents who qualifies for Aid and Attendance was $14,509 as of 2019. This amount is adjusted annually for cost-of-living increases. To qualify, the surviving spouse must meet certain eligibility criteria, including: The deceased veteran must have served during a period of war. The surviving spouse must require assistance with daily activities like bathing, dressing, or feeding. The surviving spouse's income and assets must fall below certain thresholds. The actual benefit amount is calculated by subtracting the surviving spouse's countable income from the MAPR. Importantly, unreimbursed medical expenses, including assisted living costs, can be deducted from countable income, potentially increasing the benefit amount. For example, if a surviving spouse's annual income is $10,000 and they qualify for the full Aid and Attendance rate, they could potentially receive up to $4,509 per year ($14,509 - $10,000) to help cover assisted living expenses. It's worth noting that while this benefit can significantly help with assisted living costs, it may not cover the full expense in many cases. For much of the past year, the Southern California housing market has seen an extreme shortage of homes for sale, due largely to a long-term lack of building compounded by homeowners choosing not to sell and give up low mortgage rates. However, in April, the number of homes listed for sale in most SoCal counties rose from the same month a year earlier, according to data from Zillow. Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties turned positive for the first time since the first half of 2023, each recording an increase of at least 5 percent.
