The FAA has been working to define how Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) vehicles will integrate into the national airspace. This includes vehicles with capabilities for vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) and ground systems for landing and traffic management. Late last year the FAA paved the way for AAM by adding the definition of powered-lift (characteristics of aircraft and rotorcraft) to the set of rules that apply to air carriers and commercial operators for air commerce in Title 14 Code of Federal Regulation (14 CFR). The current state of the work can be reviewed here https://lnkd.in/g_JpHu6y - Advanced Air Mobility | Air Taxis | Federal Aviation Administration Deos™, DDC-I’s safety-critical time and space partitioned real-time operating system (RTOS) that has been verified to the guidance of DO-178C/ED-12C Design Assurance Level A (DAL A) for Avionics Applications. Deos is certified and flying in over 10,000 aircraft as part of many different avionics systems in many classifications of aircraft including commercial aircraft, business jets, helicopters and military aircraft. Deos is currently being designed into to several of these new AAM vehicles. Given its pedigree, it’s a low-risk software environment that is very well suited for incremental system updates that are anticipated in most AAM aircraft.  Further, Deos allows for very efficient multi-core processing, which enables AAMs to further squeeze down their SWAP objectives for system avionics. Pratt & Whitney recently launched an AI-based aircraft engine analysis tool for geared turbofan and V2500 powerplants. Called Percept, the inspection tool combines computer vision technology with a video intelligence operating system developed by Indian AI start-up Awiros. The company's maintenance technicians use a cloud-based interface on a mobile device to capture images of an engine, and the app provides real-time parts availability status. According to Pratt & Whitney, Percept has reduced the time it takes to conduct an engine inspection by nearly 90%. Oh I like this -- using #AAM for #nonstop routes rather than through a hub. But that means regulatory changes according to Mark Allen at Electra.aero in this Aviation Week Network report. “If you look around the U.S. today, 70% of traffic goes through 30 airports,” Allen said, referring to the hub-and-spoke model dominating U.S. air travel. “What kind of regulatory change is necessary to enable direct aviation?” he asked, pointing to the need for reforms to make point-to-point air travel more accessible to consumers. This is a great stat: “$700 in fuel is equivalent to $17 of electricity, according to Kyle Clark at BETA TECHNOLOGIES. That will dramatically bring down user costs but what don't we know? Still, I'm betting with the size of the #aircraft this will be a permium service as Lilium suggested during the #airtaxiworldcongress last year. It is unsurprising the inauguration of service will depend on current #infrastructure at #airports and #FBOs and I like the thought this will stem the tide of #airport closures, as Allen suggested. This month in AIAA's Aerospace America magazine (AIAA) : the short version of The View From 50,000 Feet panel session I led at #AVIATION2024. As you'll read, the global #aviation sector is at a pivotal moment. Just as the world is facing enormous challenges — #climatechange, workforce demographic shifts, geopolitical instability, #disruptivetechnology advances and more — so is our industry. Success for the future will require diverse, future-facing strategic systems thinking that connects stakeholders and challenges across the ecosystem we are all part of. It also requires articulating how we can help solve, rather than make worse, those global challenges. The panel I moderated in July at the AIAA Aviation Forum, “The View From 50,000 Feet,” teased out some of the issues. Will we see Boeing give up its space business after reporting $3.1 billion in losses in the first 9 months of this year and multiple PR nightmares around the Starliner mission? A recent exclusive article in the Wall Street Journal gives us a peek into the current state at Boeing. The report defines the discussions initiated by Kelly Ortberg, Boeing’s new chief executive officer, as "at an early stage." And it's uncertain how much of the business may be sold if a sale happens at all. Boeing mostly would sell its Starliner program and Space Station side of activities but still might keep their presence up in the financially mounting SLS program. Even their 50% stake in ULA, the alliance behind just retired Atlas V and newly up Vulcan Centaur, can be up for sale as both Lockheed and Boeing have reportedly been interested in selling it. The loss numbers show how bad it has been, and they also sacked the head of the division, Ted Colbert, in September. But who is going to pick up such a mess? Perhaps Boeing can emerge as a smaller better company. I still reiterate my strategic advice: 1. Separate the Military/Space from Civil side 2. Change the leadership, change the board 3. Move the company back to Seattle etc etc.
