A reddit URL climbing it's way to a commercial intent keyword. Search intent is becoming mixed, its common to see a keyword with multiple intents commercial, and informational for example.... Can one page fulfill both? or should we target each intent with a page? I've seen blogs and product pages both ranking for commercial intent keywords. Thoughts?

Don't go chasing Domain Rating goes the famous TLC song. For those of you who aren't SEO nerds, Domain Rating shows the strength of a website's backlink profile compared to the others in the Ahrefs (an SEO software) database on a 100-point scale. Lately, I've gotten several requests from prospects whose primary ask is to "raise my Domain Rating by 15-20 points in one year." Not only is this an unstructured approach, but it is also chasing a vanity metric (a waterfall) that doesn't always have something to do with actual business value. For example, I showed a prospect a website that built (or earned) over 300 links in one year. Their Domain Rating actually went down from 53 to 52. An uninitiated SEO agency might sell this prospect on 300 links in one year (this is hella expensive) and get the same results. It's just a bad KPI. For me, I need to look holistically at things like : - current on-page SEO - current content - # of competitors referring domains to page - internal links ...before I start arbitrarily building links. So if your primary concern is to increase Domain Rating, you should first understand that there are 4-5 fundamental things you must understand and successfully implement before investing in link building. For me, the question shouldn't be "How can I increase my Domain Rating?" It's "What SEO strategies do I need to implement to generate more sales?" See you in the water.

My new ask an SEO column went live on SEJ while I was at engage SEMpdx. I wrote this one around February or March, and its interesting to see it applies more than ever now. The question was about where to point backlinks too if you're link building, and what naturally occurring ones would look like. It's a question that gets asked a lot, and one that I've been asked about at conferences for 15+ years now. Natural backlinks do not point to product pages, rarely point to category or collection pages, but can and will point to profile pages, homepages, FAQs if there are customer complaints, etc... There are always exceptions like when you have a signature product, or a product goes viral on social media. But if you're building backlinks to product and category pages and they are not getting actual media coverage and going crazy on social media, you should expect these links to work against you whether it is now, or a year from now. Hand up I missed that this was published in 2020, thought it was brand new. Regardless its still accurate. Definitely check it out, at least read the "What Can the SEO Industry Do to Fight Disinformation?" section.

Google’s AI Overviews are now live in the U.S., and they’re coming for B2B software companies …if your SEO strategy has been focused on creating high-level “what is” content that any underpaid freelancer (or large language model) can easily spin up. I’ve been looking at the results for hundreds of purchase intent keywords all morning — those for highly popular categories/brands and much more niche ones — and I haven’t run across a single AI Overview for any of them. Best CRMs, email marketing software, sales AI software, accounting software, Quickbooks alternatives, Walnut alternatives, HubSpot vs Salesforce, Zoom vs Teams, Help Scout vs Front — zero AI Overviews. Instead of panicking about losing traffic to top-of-funnel posts that — let’s be honest — rarely (if ever) helped with customer acquisition in the first place, maybe it’s time to pivot to a revenue-focused SEO strategy that actually moves the needle for your business.

I’ve written blog posts that have converted to *millions* in revenue. 💫 I’ve also written hundreds of blog posts that didn’t generate a single dollar in pipeline — At least not based on a narrow review of the conversion data. But if you zoom out a little on some of those sites, you’ll start to see that the “low performing” posts were often doing the work that made that star post appear to convert so effortlessly. Those kinds of posts build up the site authority on that topic with the search algorithms. They also represent micromoments of brand building with people who were learning about a topic but weren’t quite ready to raise their hands to talk to sales. #GenAI search is going to make it more important than ever to consider your entire content ecosystem. Luckily, genAI tools are also making it easier than ever to understand the relationships in that ecosystem. But what does all that mean for how we structure and run our content teams? Which tools deserve a place in our budget request for next year? What skills do we need to pick up ourselves or hire for? Why does measuring in-app ROAS suck, and why do so many marketing agencies not freaking get it? This week I'm in Seattle with a lot of SEO folks at #MozCon! 🎉 🎉 "Why?" - you may ask. "I thought you only do PPC Anu" you may say. Because for a truly successful PPC revenue driving strategy you NEED to understand how SEO works. It's something I have said plenty of times, talked about on stages and invited experts in the matter to talk at PPC Live about. Yes, primarily we are responsible for driving traffic to the site but you know you are going to be asked about conversion and revenue. And you know what on page SEO could really help with?? CRO practitioners rant regularly about avoiding channel-based thoughts. It’s not just about stakeholder expectations and a longer process that takes time to fully establish. It’s that the impact you see at the surface level on website performance does not tell the full story. Testing will increase conversion rates and revenue, and it’s easy to measure. That’s not all though. Because your website converts users better, it means the ROAS for your ads will be higher. Think about it for a second, it’s a pretty big deal. Users click an ad and do not magically buy. They need to browse a landing page, consider their buying decision and complete a purchase. Same goes for filling a demo request! If if ROAS increases, then it either means that you can acquire more users for the same budget, or that your ad spend becomes more efficient and you can reallocate. Many orgs can eventually pay off their entire testing program costs by this nature. So is website testing a channel? Not really, it’s just part of the customer journey. When we start thinking holistically, then this function of the business will have positive rewards for every channel. Yes, it’s a cost to approach web development and website strategy methodically. Thinking about it with a channel mindset is opting into a limited view of what it can do for the org. Revenue and ROI are great, but when you can make every other online initiative win as well, then even though not easy to measure, surely that must accelerate business growth.

A prospect reached out who had migrated from Klaviyo to Sendgrid to boost their email performance. But their previous agency didn't truly understand deliverability. The results were disastrous. Inconsistent inbox placement. Damaged sender reputation. Massive loss of revenue. But that's just the beginning. Many agencies claim to be deliverability experts. They lack the deep technical knowledge and strategic skills needed to succeed. They rely on outdated tactics and shallow quick-fixes. Protect your sender reputation. Maintain consistent inbox placement. Maximize your email ROI. Don't fall for empty promises and half-measures. They will lull you into a false sense of security. Protecting your deliverability requires constant vigilance, deep expertise, and a proactive approach. Anything less is a recipe for disaster. If you're not sure whether your agency is up to the task, it's time to take action. Demand answers. Take control of your email deliverability. The stakes are too high to leave it to chance.
