A person who feels appreciated will always do more than what is expected." Recognition is a tremendously underrated leadership skill. Leaders who recognize and appreciate their team's work have: ↳Higher engagement ↳Lower turnover ↳Better productivity And it's also just the right thing to do. A no-brainer all around. Rules for a good leader: 1. Treat everyone with respect and treat everyone fairly; 2. Always be truthful and honor your word; 3. Make sure that you understand the mission before engaging the team; 4. Always praise in public and criticize in private; and 5. Make sure that your team has what they need to get the job done.

“Leader” … an ambiguous term, indeed. I pride myself in continuously demonstrating what it means to lead. To lead is a gift. As leaders, we are afforded the chance to ignite the potential we see in others. To lead is to foster an environment of growth with dignity and to invigorate our follower’s belief in themselves. When we can inspire people to believe something beyond what they thought was possible in themselves is when we are respectfully defined as a leader. Lead with heart, regardless of your title.

Do you have the right people on the boss? Do you have the expert in their field? Do you let your leaders lead? Do you micro or macro lead your team? Do you have trust/control issues? If you look deep into your being and the pain you have endeared throughout your life, you will realize you answered yes these questions. If you don’t do some self-care, your business will always be good not great. Leading people isn’t about the numbers, it is about the relationships you build with people, then the numbers will come. Keeping the right people on your bus – empathy, love, & words of affirmation. I taught a Visual Merchandising class at a College in my home town. It was a great experience. The students decorated their heritage house for the holidays. I challenged my students to be creative without technology or outside influences – create from within.  In my lesson plans, I did workshops and forced them to create with her hands. One day I brought bars of soap/carving tools into the classroom and dropped them in the middle of the table. I told each student to grab a soap/carving tool, & create a fashion accessory out of it. They looked at me blank faced.  As they carved, I was amazed how focused they were to create their master piece.  When the workshop was completed, one of my students, didn’t have a great role model/mentor in his life, showed us his soap carved stiletto heel. I said in front of the whole classroom, wow that is the most amazing footwear I have ever seen in my whole fashion career life. I don't think he ever had the affirmation from someone how talented he really was. I knew that very second he had a gift like no other. I continued to mentor & encourage him to the best he can be, without listening to naysayers. He now is an international fashion designer, designs beautiful pieces for celebrities, and owns 2 boutiques. Don’t forget the power of affirmation. I am not a big fan of positive, negative, positive employee reviews. People only hear the negative & they don’t hear the good.  Words of affirmation, will fix the negative traits, they will want to work harder for you, & will be more loyal. If you are thinking, how can words of affirmation, fixes the negative parts of their job performance? Well if they trust in you and they know you believe in them, they will allow you & your management team to mentor them in their short comings. Tip: keep a journal of each team member's best traits & ones that need improvement. Continue to research, from the expert advice, on how to improve this negative trait.  They may need some additional schooling/training. It is worth the investment. if they are your right investment. Maybe it is you, that needs some additional training to be a better leader. When you are aware of your weaknesses & know where your strengths lack, this is the first step to improving as a leader. If this doesn’t work, then maybe you have the wrong person on the bus. Love more, judge less.

Lead People to Believe in Themselves The best leaders are those who lead people to believe in themselves. People believe in themselves when they have a reason to commit to something significant and meaningful. When people feel inspired by their leader, leadership is at its best. When people are made to feel important, when they know they matter and they have an important role, they bring their best to all they need to accomplish. Inspiration drives motivation. When people understand the direction of the vision, leadership is at its prime. People need to know where they are heading and why they are headed there. Once they have that knowledge, they can leverage their talent to achieve great results. Direction fosters purpose. When people feel safe to make mistakes, leadership is supportive. While success relies on innovation and creativity, it also takes many mistakes to succeed. When your people feel safe to fail, you have done your job in preparing them to meet challenges and letting them know they will go unscathed when they make mistakes. A safety net promotes security. When people experience trust in their own ability, leadership is at its peak. Those you entrust feel important and empowered. Trust encourages people to bring their talent and knowledge and become part of the team. Trust leads to confidence. When people know they can contribute in a meaningful way, leadership is optimal. It is important for people to know that they have a genuine contribution to make, that what they do is instrumental in achieving significant results. Meaning creates justification. I wish more people understood this. Self-awareness is key. Know your strengths and hire people with different strengths. Value what they bring to the team.
