Such a sad situation for Arkane Studios Austin. No team deserves to be shutdown like this. I played a lot of Redfall and enjoyed it. This isn't all corporate greed and stock prices; we as fans have a role in this as well. I'm not saying that we shouldn't critique or call out unkept promises during development. Far too often when we criticize, we lose the human element behind these large projects. Those at Arkane, Bethesda Game Studios, タンゴゲームワークス（Tango Gameworks）, this is not your fault. You asked for it! 😂 Keeping up with my Job Hunt™️, a LinkedIn Original Series. Job Hunter's Journal Week 2 🧡 ➡️ Motto: What now? This week we had to get creative. 𝑨𝒔 𝒊𝒕 𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒔 𝒐𝒖𝒕, 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒓𝒖𝒏 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒋𝒐𝒃𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒍𝒚 𝒇𝒐𝒓. Normally this tends to happen around week 3-5, however, the games industry is going through one of the most challenging times yet (IMO because we didn't plan our workforces carefully and conservatively the past 3 years, but no point crying over spilt milk). Being pragmatic about this, I can essentially do two things: 🟣Start fully applying for jobs outside of Games, which entails: •Figuring out which industries I feel connected to and/or would be good at. •Mapping them to understand who are the main players and main products. •Remake my job hunting documents to show my full skillset plus transferrable knowledge. •Connect with heads of people, heads of recruitment and influential people in those industries. •Apply like there's no tomorrow. 🟠Brainstorm how I can add value to people, and monetise my skillset while passively job hunting, which looks like: •Connecting with and having initial chats with different game recruitment agencies. •Writing down a few blurbs about myself (a short paragraph selling the candidate's USP) to assist those agencies. •Looking inward to assess my skill set, and past experiences, to try to come up with solutions within recruitment to common problems. •Conceptualising a product (by product, I mean something that adds value and has a monetary value, it can be a workshop, a strategic review, a consultation...) I feel confident and comfortable delivering/selling. •Making a beautiful deck for it using Canva. •Business Develop my way around town. I'm not ready to job hunt outside #GameDev just yet. So I've taken the second route. --- 🚨 While I was writing this post, I realised that many candidates aren't aware of the number of game-focused recruitment agencies out there. Dave the Diver is getting a Godzilla DLC, and it is free!! This new DLC will see Dave come face-to-face with the might Godzilla himself, though in keeping with the true spirit of Godzilla you won’t be fighting the big lizard so much as helping it overcome one of its adversaries, Ebirah, Horror of the Deep, from the 1966 live-action movie of the same name. Players will need to pilot the G-Force submarine to take Ebirah on, and work alongside Godzilla to protect the planet from the mighty crustacean’s threat. You can claim this DLC right now from the below digital console and PC storefronts, and you’ll need to do so before November 23rd, 2024, because it’s only available until then. Paradox Interactive announced today that Double Eleven, the developer behind Prison Architect 2, will be stepping away from the project after nine years with the Prison Architect franchise. Good news first, construction on Prison Architect 2 isn't being halted! Co-development studio Kokku, who's been working on the game since 2023 and previously collaborated with Double Eleven, will take the lead in bringing the sequel to completion. The news comes with a hint of complication. While Prison Architect 2 passed certification, negotiations between Paradox and Double Eleven for continued development reached an impasse. Technical hurdles, particularly with memory usage and minimum specifications, emerged during final testing. Paradox, likely wary of past performance issues (think Cities: Skylines 2), emphasizes their commitment to delivering a high-quality sequel that honors the Prison Architect legacy. Kokku, a Brazilian studio with a history of co-development and outsourcing on major titles like Horizon Forbidden West and Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War, is now at the helm to ensure Prison Architect 2's smooth launch. The Prison Architect series, which began in 2015 with the original simulation/management game, is still on track for a 2024 release with Prison Architect 2. Today, for example, to kick this resource addition off with a bang, he added 59 roles. 🎮 Want a job in the video game industry? 🎮 Begin with the end in mind.* ➡ When you drive to work do you just turn left or right based on how you feel that day? 😅 (I hope you left extra early that day) ➡ When you gather data for a project, do you grab monthly active users, popular breakfast items and breeds of dog? 🤐 (This report might be fun but your boss will not be happy) ➡ When you schedule a doctor appointment, do you call random numbers in the phone book? 🙃 The same applies to...well...applying for jobs. ❔ Do you look at the minimum requirements for a job or do you click easy apply on cool titles? (Although, I might as well shoot my shot for Game Director) ❔ Do you update your resume with your most relevant experience when you apply? What is your desired outcome? Work backwards and you'll see at least some of the steps in a path to get there. This is not easy to do, because there is no perfect way to be the best fit for a job. Everyone's journey is different. Bit late talking about this one but huge news coming from 343 Industries, both a re-brand to Halo Studios and confirmation that they are switching development to Unreal. 🗞️ This comes off the back of 343's struggles with development of Halo: Infinite. We've seen many other studios move away from their own engines to Unreal, notably CD Projekt Red! Are proprietary engines going out fashion? 🤔 For those who have worked on both proprietary engines and Unreal, what have you found to be the key advantages of working with Unreal? #gamedev #unreal #halo

Many screw up live service games by focusing on the wrong things. (I've seen it firsthand) 1. Core Game.  ↳ It's crucial, but it's not everything. 2. Retention Game.  ↳ Most games fail here. Do not miss it. 3. Advocate Game.  ↳ Your goldmine, but only if basics are right. Stop obsessing about a perfect Core Game. 🔴 It’s a trap. If your players don’t return, polish fails. 🟢 What you need to do 1. Core Game. Is what your players do over and over again. What you want to hear: ↳ "Got it, I know how your game works." 2. Retention Game. Is what brings players back repeatedly. What you want to hear: ↳ "I'm hooked; I want to keep progressing!" 3. Advocate Game. Is where your top fans live. What you want to hear: ↳ “I'm hosting a live stream for your game!” Anything else, Sergei? ✋ Don’t wait for perfection. Engage top players with social features. Continuing from my post the other day about the difficulties many gamers face in just being able to participate in a tournament (https://lnkd.in/gkRkk5hu) I want to discuss a specific part of that issue - Forming teams. I outline some major problems in forming teams below and we have seen some attempts to solve these problems in the past. These have mostly been online team builders allowing teams and free players to match with each other to participate in a tournament. I believe this solution can't effectively create good teams en masse that can have great tournament experiences. Why? Because this is effectively a 3+2 or 4+1 flex queue but instead of playing normal ranked matches, these groups of players are going into even more intense tournament matches, creating the perfect conditions for toxic outbursts: high-pressure matches and low familiarity among the players. Add to this what we know about team dynamics overall, such as Tuckman's "Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing" theory, and I think it's pretty clear that we have no reliable and effective way to solve the problem of finding a team for players that lack a team but are interested in participating in a tournament. The above has played a big part in the approach to esports training and program structure I developed in Iceland and we have further developed at the Esports Coaching Academy. By creating an in-person program with a low barrier to entry that effectively allows us to engage passionate gamers even before they develop an interest in participating in tournaments and by having a large group (15-20) of players train together under the supervision of a coach, I believe we can solve the team problem. With this approach, we can: - Increase the number of players interested in participating in tournaments - Create a positive social reinforcement loop of performance-oriented gaming - Develop interpersonal relationships and team dynamics over time through regular interactions - Match players on multiple criteria like skill, ambition, and social bonds come tournament time - Have a responsible person (the coach) to mediate and develop team dynamics during and after a tournament I would love to hear your thoughts!
