Every single person on your team — no matter what their position is — should know and live by your company’s values. When I first joined Coherent Corp. (known as II-VI at the time) as a board member, we had 7 values. They were printed on the back of everyone’s business card but, still, I could never remember them all. In the wake of a large acquisition, I was walking around various facilities and chatting with everyone. I asked if anyone knew what our company’s values were — and no one knew them! That was a hint of an opportunity. I realized that the acquisition was a period of transformation for the company, and it was an opportunity to revisit our values. I remember studying the values of all the S&P 500 companies for inspiration, taking into consideration the founding values of II-VI as well as the values of the companies we had acquired. Eventually, I decided on: ICARE which stands for integrity, collaboration, accountability, respect and enthusiasm. Taken in that order, they have allowed our team to declare “I care” as the primary reason for working at Coherent and helping change the world. I firmly believe that values (and sticking to them) are integral to a company’s success. This might be a little bold to say but as far as I know, today, there’s no one in the company that doesn’t know what our values are.

while large corporations should get subsidies to setup large facilities, nobody else can, and those subsidies do trickle down if given to facilities that won't come to US otherwise, such as those of TSMC and Samsung Semiconductor and even of US manufacturers such as GlobalFoundries that may not otherwise find it viable smaller ecosystem players are also important, and perhaps more important for the success of overall investment because the trickle down may be neither timely nor sufficient

Texas Instruments Wins $4.6 Billion in #ChipsAct Grants, Loans - Funding will support $18 billion in spending in #Texas, #Utah - Biden administration almost finished allocating #chips grants Texas Instruments Inc. is set to receive $1.6 billion in Chips Act grants and $3 billion in loans, the #Bidenadministration announced Friday, marking the latest major award from a program designed to boost #American #semiconductormanufacturing. The funding will help pay for one factory in Utah and two in Texas — projects that will cost about $18 billion through 2029 — the Commerce Department said in a statement. The effort is expected to generate around 2,000 #manufacturing #jobs and thousands more in #construction. In total, #TexasInstruments plans to spend around $40 billion across both states, including an additional two factories in #Sherman, Texas. It’s likely that those will come online after 2030, and the Commerce Department has said it will prioritize projects that will be done by the end of the decade. According to TrendForce, DRAM industry revenue increased significantly to US$22.9 billion in the second quarter of 2024, a month-on-month increase of 24.8%. This surge was mainly due to the expansion of mainstream product shipments, which drove revenue growth for most manufacturers. Contract prices in the second quarter continued to rise, and due to geopolitical factors, the increase in traditional DRAM contract prices in the third quarter is expected to exceed previous forecasts. Major manufacturers Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron all saw an increase in shipments in the second quarter compared to the previous quarter. Average selling prices also continued the upward trend in the first quarter. Driving factors included the earthquake in Taiwan in early April and high demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) products, which prompted DRAM buyers to adopt a more aggressive purchasing strategy. semiStocks: Big Caps and Growth Stock Trends                     ... for the week ending Aug 16, 2024 As for the longer term picture, last week's gains were enough to recover its lower channel line. This is another positive sign to what I noted of last week's "positive sign that the local bottom might have passed." That said, a lot will hinge on Fed Chair Powell's talks next week. The market is expecting hints of a 25 to 50 bp rate cut in September. As I've written since last year, don't expect it until the election is over. So we may see Powell dig a deep hole in Jackson Hole. The biggest challenge next week will be for semiconductor stock investors to push my index back into the middle of its channel. Last week was brilliant: Nvidia recovered 49 points to clear the 200% bar. It is simply in a class of its own, closing in on its 226% peak in June. TSMC cleared the 100% bar, while Broadcom came just short. Advantest recovered 21 points, moving up to 2nd, while KLA's 16 pointer extended its lead over the big caps. #HBM4 set to land sooner than expected 💡 Suppliers and JEDEC are bringing their HBM4 plans forward as they suspect the forecasted Gen #AI boom means incoming NVIDIA GPUs will need it sooner. High bandwidth memory (#HBM) bypasses #X86 socket-connected #DRAM capacity and bandwidth limits by having #memory dies stacked on top of a logic layer, with interconnecting TSV channels, all linked to a #GPU via an interposer component providing higher bandwidth than X86 sockets. The Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) confirms and issues HBM standards, with the current one being its fifth, HBM3E (extended). JEDEC has said it will issue a completed HBM4 spec by the end of this year – just few months ago the schedule was for a 2025 delivery. Preliminary HBM4 characteristics are emerging already. Intel Corporation CEO Pat Gelsinger Steps Down Amid Challenges and Restructuring Efforts Intel has announced the immediate retirement of CEO Pat Gelsinger, who also steps down from the board of directors. CFO David Zinsner and Michelle Johnston Holthaus have been named interim co-CEOs as the company searches for a new leader. Gelsinger, a 40-year Intel veteran who returned in 2021, led the company through a tumultuous period marked by a 61% stock price decline, the largest layoff in Intel’s history (up to 17,475 employees), and efforts to regain process leadership via its IDM 2.0 strategy. Despite some progress, challenges persisted, including delays in product launches, declining competitiveness against AMD and Arm, and a limited presence in the booming AI market. While Gelsinger’s tenure stabilized manufacturing with a roadmap for five nodes in four years, Intel’s fortunes now hinge on the success of its upcoming 18A node, which shows promising early signs.
