Big Ticket Nollywood: Leading The Charge In African Cinema - Present-day Nollywood is a thriving industry and a key component of Nigeria’s economy. Nollywood’s economic impact is profound. With an output of over 50 full-length feature films weekly, Nollywood supports a vast workforce, employing over 300,000 people directly and up to a million in- directly, making it one of the largest employers in Nigeria, contributing significantly to the country’s economy and job market. Yet another report released by the Nigerian Entertainment Conference (NECLive) in November last year, says the sector has moved from the production and distribution of 1,800 films worth $5.1 billion in 2013 to 2,500 films worth $6.4 billion. The industry is projected to reach an estimated $14.82 billion revenue in 2025. Whatever the figures may be, they point to upward growth. “The ecosystem of the Nigerian film industry is incredible” Oyin Lasisi, a movie producer, further underscores the industry’s role in job creation. “As far as employment is concerned, it has been amazing — people getting jobs around here. We have created a whole lot of things for people to do. In the last month, people have been getting diferent kinds of jobs as far as production is concerned. And it’s been great; we intend to keep t moving, to ensure that everybody is employed.” The ripple effect of Nollywood’s growth can be seen in various sectors, from fashion and music to tourism. The industry’s demand for skilled labor has led to the development of numerous training programs and workshops, further enhancing the skillsets of Nigerian professionals. “We are changing the economy,” “The industry is a major employer and has immense potential for growth.” “Nollywood is growing faster than we all thought. The quality of our productions is getting a lot better. The quality of our stories that we’re telling, acting, funding, profits— everything is kind of in the positive and it’s a good time to be in Nollywood,” Egbuson adds. Films in the industry often delve into themes central to Nigerian and African identity, from family dynamics and religious beliefs to social issues. They challenge stereotypes and offer an authentic representation of African stories, celebrating resilience and cultural richness. One of the most ambitious projects on the horizon is the development of a $100-million Film City in Lagos. This facility aims to attract international productions and provide state-of-the-art infrastructure. The influence of Nollywood extends beyond entertainment, playing a crucial role in shaping percep- tions of Africa. “Nigeria is going to be the powerhouse of the creative economy. I’ve been watching the incredible rise of AI lately, exploring its potential across various creative fields. After watching a ton of expertly crafted YouTube content, I was inspired to try my hand at it. So, I wrote a short script about our African stories platform and decided to bring it to life using a combination of tools: #RunwayML for audio generation, #Grok for image generation, and #Capcut to bring everything together. Hello from New York! 🌆 There’s just something about this city that ignites big dreams. Maybe it’s the music we grew up on or the iconic movies we watched. Let’s take a moment to explore—New York’s economy, at $1.8 trillion, it is more than half the size of Africa’s entire economy. This city is home to just over 8 million people, while Africa is home to over a billion. From the tallest building in America, the One World Trade Center, to the vibrant streets below, New York inspires. We need to understand scale and time in Africa. I have seen people who are stuck on their small businesses, they are not open to expanding into other African countries or collaborating with other businesses and when their economy sneezes they catch a serious cold. This is Sad mergers or acquisitions are rare in Africa. I dream of a united Africa one day—where we all come together for a better continent that lifts up its people. One thing I admire about the U.S. is the ease of building a business here. Sure, every economy has its challenges, but productivity is high, and people stay focused. In Africa, we often see side hustles distracting employees, especially in startups. I once had an accountant who started selling towels from her office shelf! We had to let her go. Entrepreneurship is tough and startups need team players. No winning team has ever skipped the hard work. Let’s build that mindset in Africa too! With the rise of monetized content, brand partnerships, and a more structured industry, entertainers are proving that careers in music, film, and creative media are profitable and sustainable. 2. Entertainers Can’t Thrive Without International Validation: Platforms like Boomplay, Netflix and more importantly social media have given African entertainers a global audience directly, and major festivals in Africa now attract international fans and brands. 3. Only Musicians and Actors Can Succeed in Entertainment: There’s more acknowledgment of behind-the-scenes roles like filmmakers, A&Rs, producers, gaffers, writers, creative directors and hundreds more, who drive the industry forward. These roles are now seen as legitimate and essential, with more people training and becoming certified specifically for them. 4. Success in Entertainment Is Based on Luck: The industry is shifting to recognize that strategic planning, talent development, and networking are key. Initiatives by companies like Culture Plug emphasize that structured PR, branding, partnerships, and a couple more technicalities are crucial for sustained success. 5. Independent Artists Can't Succeed Without a Record Label: Artistes are now able to succeed independently through streaming services, social media, their team and digital distribution, without relying on major labels. 6. Women Can't Lead the Industry Women are increasingly taking on leadership roles in African entertainment, excelling as executives, producers, and directors, proving that gender doesn’t limit capability in the industry. 7. African Audiences Only Want Local Content: African Audiences are increasingly open to multi-cultural influences in content, whether through film, music, or digital media. While local content is still a priority, African entertainers blend global and local creativity. 8. Entertainment Doesn’t Contribute to Economic Growth: African governments and investors are recognizing the industry as a significant contributor to the economy, creating jobs and generating revenue through global distribution. 9. Entertainment Education Isn’t Necessary: Now more than ever, many are seeing the value of formal education in entertainment careers. My Name is Nwachukwu Hyacinth Ukwuagu. I am a 2D Animator, currently transitioning into 3D animation with advanced Post-Production training in the YAPPI Program. My Journey Through the YAPPI Animation and Post-Production program from the online phase to the on-premise phase, has been great. The past three months of the onsite training have been an exciting and transformative experience. As a 2D animator transitioning into the world of 3D, I've encountered a steep learning curve but also discovered immense opportunities for creative growth and technical proficiency in the following aspects;   1. The Blender Software: A New Dimension of Creativity Diving into Blender, I've covered a reasonable extent of the software which focused on modelling, texturing and rendering. This has been rewarding. Understanding the intricacies of the 3D space, learning to manipulate vertices, edges, and faces, and creating complex models have expanded my creative horizons. Blender's robust toolset has allowed me to bring more depth and realism to my creative skills. The community resources & tutorials have been invaluable in mastering the basics and experimenting with new techniques.   2. Unreal Engine: Stepping into Interactive Worlds My introduction to Unreal Engine has been nothing short of awe-inspiring. The power of real-time rendering and the potential for creating immersive environments have opened my eyes to new storytelling possibilities. Although I've only scratched the surface, learning about scene setup, as well as basic navigation techniques within UE has been thrilling. The integration of 3D assets from Blender into Unreal Engine has given me a glimpse of how seamlessly these tools can work together to create stunning visual experiences.   3. Anticipation for Post-Production Training As I look forward to the remaining months of this course, I'm eager to delve into post-production software. Mastering tools like After Effects and DaVinci Resolve will enable me to polish my animations and add the final touches that make them truly shine. Understanding compositing, colour grading, and advanced visual effects will be crucial in elevating the quality of my projects.   4. Reflections and Aspirations This training program has been a blend of challenges and triumphs. The shift from 2D to 3D has broadened my perspective, and the introduction to Unreal Engine has sparked a new passion for interactive media. I am confident that the skills I am acquiring will not only enhance my current projects but also open doors to new opportunities in the animation and post-production industry. Thank you Dr. Akanimo Odon Tarcisious Zuur and Dr Nellie Kangwa for the mentorship sessions. Thank you, YAPPI Nigeria, Del-York Creative Academy, and Mastercard Foundation, for the career-evolving journey. Opportunity starts with visibility! Content is king, and visibility is the throne. Tales of an African Creative: A 90-Day Journey of Passion! Day 60: Opportunity starts with visibility! Your light shines brighter when you let it. 2024 taught me a hard truth: If you never show your work, the world will never know your talent. And trust me, for someone who thrives in the spotlight on stage, it feels ironic to admit that I’ve mastered the art of hiding. This year, I realized I was sitting on gold and keeping it in the dark. And the world? It kept moving, oblivious to what I wasn’t willing to show. 📍Lesson 1: People see what you allow them to see. I’ve always believed my work should speak for itself. That being in the zone on stage or delivering killer punchlines was enough. But in this era, talent is not enough if it’s hidden. Content is king, and visibility is the throne. I’ve missed out on gigs, partnerships, and collaborations simply because I wasn’t visible enough. No one knew the full extent of what I could do because I didn’t show them. It’s not humility; it’s self-sabotage wrapped in silence. 📍Lesson 2: Hiding isn’t protecting—it’s delaying. You think keeping to yourself is safeguarding your peace. But for creatives, your peace is in your process, and your process thrives when shared. When I wasn’t posting my work, someone else was. When I was overthinking captions, another creative was hitting “upload.” So, how do we balance creativity, vulnerability, and visibility without losing ourselves? Here’s what I’m working on; 📌 Think of Visibility as Sharing, Not Showing Off You’re not bragging; you’re inviting others into your journey. Post that behind-the-scenes video. Share that draft idea. Don’t wait for perfection—let people fall in love with your process. 📌 Create a Content Calendar Start small. Set aside one day a week to plan posts about your work. It could be a throwback of a past gig, a funny moment from rehearsals, or your favorite story from your podcast. Consistency builds trust and keeps you on people’s radar. 📌 Get Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable If you’re a private person like me, putting yourself out there feels awkward. Do it anyway. The more you share, the easier it becomes. 📌 Leverage Testimonials Let your work speak through others. Share feedback, reviews, and client stories. People trust what they see through someone else’s eyes. 📌 Set Boundaries, but Stay Accessible You don’t have to overshare, but don’t disappear either. Strike a balance between preserving your peace and staying present. How many people are silently rooting for us, waiting for us to give them something to hold on to?
