For the aspiring skilful Leader who aspires to accomplish highest potential, I think of us. I hesitated to share this, yet its pertinence in the practice known as Leadership Embodiment - can help practitioners and would-be practitioners value the wisdom that is still available to us, quite miraculously, weaved imperceptibly into LE’s simple exercises of physiology, breath and how we reference Space. Not split, not separate but whole - 3 Leadership competencies: Mind, speech and body are indivisible in the wisdom tradition from which Leadership Embodiment was inspired and practised. I learnt through a commentary on the sutra “A Multitude of Buddhas” that the same word in Sanskrit “prabtibha” can mean “brilliance of mind”, “eloquence” or “confidence” depending on the context. “Prabtibha” finds its expression through the three energetic Leadership Embodiment competencies. (Such is the richness of nuances of Sanskrit that in English requires many words.) These are: one, Inspiring Expansive Presence; two, Centred Inclusive Listening and three; Authentic Speaking Up - and the practitioners as living breathing embodiments of these qualities that radiate into their realms of growing influence. So when we train Presence for example, our eloquence and sense of confidence will reflect our skill. Seems obvious, but you may be surprised how many people come for coaching asking to be transformed into inspiring speakers and influencers. And when I tell them Centred Listenjng is part of the training - “can we skip this?” And as for Presence, often interpreted as this power (of concentration and bigness?), it seems so vague - “this will take forever!” Relax, friends;) To put it very crudely, “Prabtibha” implies that it’s all one package. The bad news is that if you ignore one, its impact will be everywhere. The good news is that you train one and you enjoy the fruit and magic everywhere. Ref: The Ten Bhūmis - chapter 31 in the 45-chapter Tibetan version of A Multitude of Buddhas (Buddhāvataṃsaka). This is often referred to by its shortened Sanskrit title, Avataṃsaka, and has been translated from the Chinese by Thomas Cleary as The Flower Ornament Scripture. 3 reasons to get your PCC (Professional Certified Coach) with the ICF (International Coaching Federation) Here’s 3 good reasons to consider getting the PCC credential: 1. More marketable. You will become more marketable with a higher level credential. In fact, there are some coaching platforms and coaching organizations that require a PCC in order to work for them. You will better position yourself within the market with a PCC. 2. Professionally the PCC makes sense. Coaching is a big part of who you are and how you show up in the world so getting the Professional Certified Coach credential from the ICF makes sense for you and your coaching business. 3. Cost effective. When you get your PCC, you no longer have to do 10 mentorship sessions for each ICF renewal. Also, many students opt to go straight for the PCC as it means spending less money on multiple credential applications. Any other reasons you see to get your PCC? Strategic Doing, an emerging management discipline, builds on and expands on John Dewey and Donald Schön's basic principles to solve today's issues of collaboration and innovation in complex systems. DEWEY: LEARNING AND INQUIRY Dewey, writing in the 1920s, was a leading voice in American pragmatism. He explained how learning takes place through continuous inquiry. In an early paper on psychological safety, Amy Edmondson explained: "Dewey described learning as an iterative process of designing, carrying out, reflecting upon, and modifying actions" (Edmondson, 1999). SCHON: LEARNING AND REFLECTIVE PRACTICE Schön, a practitioner/scholar at MIT, carried forward Dewey's work by exploring how we generate actionable knowledge by reflecting on our experience. He saw learning as the path to adaptation in a complex and dynamic world. “We must… become adept at learning. We must become able to transform our institutions in response to changing situations and requirements. We must also invent and develop institutions which are ‘learning systems’...systems capable of bringing about their own continuing transformation" (Schön, 1983). SCHOLARLY STANDARDS Both Dewey and Schön lit the path for raising the practice of Strategic Doing to scholarly standards and explaining why it works. Strategic Doing builds on the foundational ideas of Dewey and Schön, providing a disciplined and practical approach to collaborative inquiry, experiential learning, and adaptive knowledge creation that enables teams to navigate the complexities and uncertainties of contemporary issues. COLLABORATIVE INQUIRY Strategic Doing integrates Dewey and Schön's principles into team-based learning and problem-solving. The discipline leads diverse teams via collective inquiry and reflection to address complicated challenges, demonstrating the practical application of their ideas in challenging situations. EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING Strategic Doing provides teams with a customizable process for learning and solving 'wicked problems,' mirroring Schön's emphasis on dealing with real-world complexity. ITERATIVE REFLECTION AND ACTION Strategic Doing involves cycles of action and reflection, inspiring teams to constantly improve their understanding and approaches, a key component of Dewey and Schön's ideas. DESIGN AND RECOMBINANT INNOVATION Strategic Doing accelerates 'recombinant innovation,' a process involving recombining ideas and resources to develop creative solutions to complex challenges. This approach builds on Schön’s ideas of design. ADAPTIVE KNOWLEDGE CREATION Strategic Doing acknowledges the fallibility of our knowledge by encouraging teams to approach their ideas as hypotheses that can be verified and modified by action, which aligns with Schön.
