    Education

Read for Literacy has been a local partner in Lucas, Wood and Seneca Counties providing a wide range of literacy services. We are able to provide reader friends and tutors to children and adults to increase their skills. Read for Literacy continues to lead the fight to break the cycle of low-literacy because we know that there are more children, adults and families who need our support. Our current programs include:

Adult Literacy, our largest program, has more than 1,150 participants engaged in learning; from reading books to learning life skills for the workplace, our student needs are met on an individual learning plan.

Creating Young Readers Pre-school program allows volunteers the opportunity to work with over 200 children ages 3, 4 and 5 who are at risk of falling behind in emergent literacy skills. Volunteers work with children to expand vocabulary skills, promote rhyming and word recognition programs. Above all is sharing the joy of books with children who might not otherwise experience reading with a caring adult. The goal is to prepare the children for kindergarten. Creating Young Readers-Elementary School program provides 300 children in grades K-2nd grade with volunteer “Reader Friends” who work with them one-to-one to increase early literacy skills necessary to experience success in the classroom. Additionally, this program includes book distribution, parent advocacy, and information to engage parents with their children in at home reading time.

English as a Second Language affords speakers of other languages the opportunity to improve their English language speaking, reading and writing skills. Tutors currently work with students whose first language is Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Arabic and more. Additionally, Read for Literacy volunteers will also assist these students prepare for completion of their US Citizenship test.

Its work, however, extends far beyond the boxing ring. Boxing is the hook that gets children and adolescents involved in no-cost afterschool academic, cultural, social, and service-learning activities.

The International Boxing Club (IBC) works to empower disadvantaged youth in the greater Toledo area to succeed in life. We use amateur boxing and boxercise as a hook to reach disadvantaged youth who are at-risk for academic failure, gang involvement, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, suicide, and other destructive behaviors.

IBC believes at-risk teenagers can become champions in life. They simply need someone who can give and show them positive alternatives. IBC’s mentors, tutors, and youth leaders help underserved teenagers succeed through afterschool programs, service-learning, and by simply believing in them.

Today, the International Boxing Club provides community-based amateur boxing programs and has created the Institute for Building Careers as the home for our youth development programs.

The IBC is now also offering a free exercise program for those with Parkinson's Disease. Dr. Rachel Martinez, a recent graduate of the University of Toledo Occupational Therapy program brought this amazing specialized program to Coach Harry Cummins, who is now Certified as a trainer for the Knock Out Parkinson's program.
