In this study, we demonstrated a straightforward method to improve the structural integrity of the fused filament fabricated (FFF) continuous carbon fiber-reinforced (CCFR) composites using self-reinforcing nanofiber interleave. Our preprint, "Magnetic and phonon-induced effects on the non-Markovian dynamics of a single solid-state defect," is now available on arXiv! 🎉 This work represents a cornerstone of my Fondecyt Iniciación project and introduces a robust theoretical and computational framework to explore phonon-induced non-Markovian dynamics in single solid-state defects. After two years of dedicated research, we've achieved significant results that shed light on the conditions under which memory effects emerge in quantum systems. 🧩✨ A heartfelt thank you to: 👉 Diego Tancara, for leading the theoretical calculations, 👉 Vicente Farid Chomali Castro, for tackling and implementing the challenging optimization problem, 👉 Daniel Andrés Castillo Castro, for identifying and analyzing phonon modes in diamond structures. Check out our paper published in the International Journal of Multiphase Flow. In this study, led by my PhD student Amir Loyevsky, we developed a new Eulerian sectional approach for simulating erosion induced by particle-laden flows. Our new framework integrates several modules: carrier flow, dispersed particle dynamics, solid mechanics, and automatic remeshing, along with auxiliary empirical erosion and restitution models. This method provides an efficient numerical algorithm for better understanding particle-flow-structure interactions in complex flow environments. #CFD #FlowDynamics #ParticleErosion #ImpingingJets #NumericalModeling

A new article on "Integrated modeling to control vaporization-induced composition change during additive manufacturing of nickel-based superalloys" by Tuhin Mukherjee (Iowa State University Mechanical Engineering), Junji Shinjo (Shimane University), T. DebRoy (Penn State University), and Chinnapat Panwisawas (Queen Mary University of London) is published in NPJ Computational Materials (Springer Nature). The article is available at: https://lnkd.in/gxhN5m7G A critical issue in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing is the selective vaporization of alloying elements resulting in poor mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of parts. The process also alters the part's chemical composition compared to the feedstock. Here we present a novel multi-physics modeling framework, integrating heat and fluid flow simulations, thermodynamic calculations, and evaporation modeling to estimate and control the composition change during LPBF of nickel-based superalloys. Experimental validation confirms the accuracy of our model. Moreover, we quantify the relative vulnerabilities of different nickel-based superalloys to composition change quantitatively and we examine the effect of remelting due to the layer-by-layer deposition during the LPBF process. Spatial variations in evaporative flux and compositions for each element were determined, providing valuable insights into the LPBF process and product attributes. The results of this study can be used to optimize the LPBF process parameters such as laser power, scanning speed, and powder layer thickness to ensure the production of high-quality components with desired chemical compositions. #additivemanufacturing #3dprinting #metallurgy #modeling #simulation #mechanicalengineering #materials #materialsengineering #nature

Super excited to share my latest paper, just published in Materials Today Communications! We take a deep dive into the fracture mechanics of 3D-printed thermoplastics with lattice-like infill structures, exploring a crucial question: is fracture toughness or fracture energy the ultimate metric to assess their fracture behavior? Two major discoveries: -Triangle and Kagome unit cells exhibited up to 10x higher crack growth resistance than traditional square geometries due to unique toughening mechanisms at the crack tip. - Relying solely on elastic fracture toughness overlooks the true fracture resistance of 3D-printed thermoplastics. Effective fracture energy is a game-changer in evaluating these materials! I believe these findings offer valuable insights into designing lighter and tougher 3D-printed thermoplastic materials with lattice-like infill structures.
