I was taught that “don’t pass on poor quality” is one of the Lean basics. I understand why. Just to make it more tangible, this is what it means when practiced literally: •Software not needing patches after release •No traveled work on the assembly line •No uninformed decisions •No product recalls •No overbilling •No process loopbacks •No misdiagnosis •No lost or delayed luggage •No products with planned obsolescence Then there’s the tools that help achieving it: Standardized Work, ANDON, Poka Yoke, Quality Standards,… tools that many adopt in their Lean Transformation. Then, the reality hits, when even fervent practitioners like Toyota struggle with it: recalls, improper car certification... So, do you think “don’t pass on poor quality” is underrated? A comment I made on Jim Womack's recent LEI post regarding kaizen which you may find of interest: "At Pratt & Whitney where I worked in the 1990s, Shingijutsu kaizen consultants required us to complete all the items listed in the kaizen newspaper during the kaizen week. A representative from all the support functions — facilities, IT, purchasing, engineering, quality, finance, etc. — was required to stop by each kaizen area a few times a day to see if they had any action items, and if so those were to be completed immediately. Only under rare circumstances could an item be left incomplete on the kaizen newspaper at the end of the kaizen week, typically because it required making or procuring something that was essential to improving product flow. The responsibility for completing the open item was mine, as the business unit manager. There is no point to engaging in kaizen if the items on the kaizen newspaper are not completed in real time. Elevating our Quality Skills with FMEA Training 🚀🚀🚀 Closing my day with such an energized mood. 🤗 We've just completed an intensive four-day FMEA training workshop, with 40 attendees from 10 departments across 3 sites. 🤓 Okay, but FME-What?!? The FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) is a structured approach to identifying and addressing potential failures in a process, product, or system, with the goal of improving reliability and safety. We combined in-depth theoretical modules with hands-on group work on practical examples and the energy and engagement from everyone were incredible. It was fantastic to see how we tackled real-world scenarios together. This collaborative approach not only deepened our global quality understanding but also made the learning process enjoyable. 💡 My key learning: The 10x rule of failure cost analysis states that costs increase tenfold at each stage of product development. If a failure is detected during the planning discussion, its correction is practically free. With this training, we’re now equipped to take our FMEA methodology to the next level, enhancing our processes and driving continuous improvement within the organization. Let's rock Tonies! What I learned as an Interim Manager in Manufacturing Engineering Statistical Process Control part 2 SPC is not just for big companies with huge quality departments. If you are making critical components for aerospace or automotive your customers may well insist on applying SPC at critical processes. SME can start small at critical processes and build from there. What is command & control leadership vs. servant leadership? & which is more effective? A central point of discussion I had with Joe Sullivan at the Manufacturing Executive Podcast ❌ Command leadership is characterized by a hierarchical structure via top-down communication, with a focus on 'taking orders'. ✅ Servant leadership focuses on a “bottom-up” approach which emphasizes the leader supporting & empowering the team. Inverting the organizational hierarchy empowers the manufacturing team, fostering a self-directed and empowered manufacturing workforce. 👉 Take your organizational chart and flip it upside down. Sometimes Improvement types are crap at seeing 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚, though we like to believe that we're somehow better than others. Ask me where I can improve, I have a list of dozens of competency gaps! Ask me where I'm excelling, I fall rather quiet. Today, I challenge myself to be less quiet... One day, CEOs of large manufacturing companies will both 𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 call me to respectfully challenge their thinking, to rehumanize their organizations. Why? Stop overcomplicating your Six Sigma projects. I know you want to make a big impact. But you only need to focus on one improvement at a time: -Identify the most critical issue -Analyze the root causes -Implement a targeted solution By breaking down your projects into manageable steps and concentrating on the highest-priority problems, you can drive meaningful change without getting bogged down in complexity.
