Life can be wild. If you told me a few years ago the project we were struggling with will one day make our team nominate for company innovation award - I would laugh very hard. But it's true. Here's the back story. We had a 0-1 product with a very big problem, we were much slower compared to competitors. I was a junior product manager at the time with next to no engineering support, against a hard timeline. So we decided to lead a tiny experiment (like, really tiny - we only added a question and a couple radio buttons on an existing screen) that led to surprises. The test hit several roadblocks. Not many believed it would work, and the test did not hit our traditional success target either. But the real a-ha moments were elsewhere. When we went deeper to understand why, we saw for a specific group our lead time went from weeks to hours, and internal efficiency improved by 75%! This test was then iterated upon and improved over 3+ years, and now this is the baseline of our Canada and USA operations. Customers love it, our satisfaction score jumped by 40% with this recipe. The little test with next to no dev support paved the way for a better customer experience company wide. Remember that next time you're struggling with resources but really believe in an idea. Test small, prove hypothesis, solve big customer problems. Do epic Sh*t. My picture in Sasan's house is living proof that this formula works. Persistence towards a vision is all you need.

Fellow in-house taxonomists, ontologists, metadata managers, and semantic wizards: what is the name of the team or business unit that you work within? I have the good fortune of getting to rename the "Content Standards" program I lead at Kaiser Permanente IT. My team has determined that the name is too vague to convey the core activities of the program, and leads to confusion with the cross-functional teams we collaborate with. I'm looking for a clear name that will resonate with stakeholders within my org. So I've got a very classic taxonomist question: What to call the program? 🤔 For some context... What my program is responsible for: - Defining and governing standards for metadata, structured data, taxonomy, and ontology for classifying/structuring digital content - Implementing processes and platforms to good metadata hygiene - Assessment and remediation of content metadata What my program doesn't cover: - Writing or editorial style guides - Content design - Content strategy - Site maps or navigational structure - Data governance Any ideas are most welcome!

As I hear about the recent layoffs at Intuit, I'm reminded of my own journey. Six years ago, I found myself in a similar position when my decade-long career at Intuit came to an end. Looking back, I'm filled with gratitude for the experiences and relationships that shaped my professional path during those 10 years. Today, I'm thrilled to share that my own business has just hired our newest employee! This milestone is a testament to the unexpected opportunities that can arise from career transitions. While Intuit provided an incredible foundation, the past six years of entrepreneurship have been transformative. The challenges and rewards of building something from the ground up have pushed me to new heights, both personally and professionally. Intuit Layoffs ~10% of its workforce! The CEO of Intuit Sasan Goodarzi has decided that firing a significant portion of his workforce, vomiting out the words Artificial Intelligence, and closing offices would cause his personal wealth (stock) to rise. It did not. The market reacted to this news negatively by dropping down from its intra-day high of $641.78 to $629.41 down ~1.9%. Sasan Goodarzi also had the nerve to mention it was for not meeting the company's high expectations. Intuit stock has returned ~4.25% year to date while the SPY has returned over 17.74%. The stock, and by extension executive management has not met the markets average expectations. Sasan Goodarzi made ~$27,305,429 in compensation alone in 2023 according to reported filings. As an Intuit investor (indirectly) It would make better sense for the board of Intuit to exercise appropriate corporate governance and fire the CEO for not meeting the markets BASIC expectations. There used to be a time where if companies did a layoff, the CEO would resign out of shame understanding they made a mistake. Now? They do it to hopefully increase share prices while vomiting out the word of the most recent trend. Sasan Goodarzi; you dropped this 🤡

This is an interesting read from HBR on self-introspection at the midpoint of our careers. I was quite taken with the question, "What do I want my days to look like?" 🤬 Rude questions 🤬 A useful exercise I learned during my time at Amazon. A few days before an important meeting, when meeting materials are not yet locked but nearing completion, the team would gather to brainstorm a list of “rude questions” — the tough queries we might face during the session. For each question we drafted a concise one-paragraph answer. This exercise not only helps you prepare for challenging scenarios but also highlights areas where you could proactively refine your pitch and meeting materials. I’ve used this exercise to prepare for many type of meetings, including leadership reviews, customer calls, and Q&A sessions. It’s especially useful when the stakes are high. It's especially helpful when done with the team.
