#supplychain #transportation Have you ever heard the phrase "robots build warehouses?" I have had lots of conversations with people about autonomous material handlers over the past year and some. The discussion usually ends with labor savings. Yet, this is hardly the biggest benefit. If you are in the market for an Anantak Robotics Inc. machine or one of its competitors, you can surely justify your business case through labor savings. However, a much more interesting benefit is scaling. When you handle twice as many goods in your facility because you have automated, you have effectively built a second warehouse. Or you doubled the size of your existing one. Call it what you will, but this is the much more interesting benefit in warehouse automation. I am reasonably certain this is what motivated Amazon to buy Kiva years ago for well over $700 million. The technology worked so well that the retailer could not restock items in the pilot warehouse fast enough. It went dry. Throughput increased 2.5x and Amazon surely looked at not needing to build another warehouse for years. The acquisition was a steal from that perspective. Walmart just announced that they are automating two regional DCs. Their efficiency gains are 2x and the retailer plans to equip 65% of these facilities with robots by the end of next year. This is a phenomenal pace, but not necessarily a surprise if you know the retailer. The bigger question is whether everyone else will follow suit or risk being left behind. #truckl #innovation

Logistics Intelligence Platform ClickPost Raises Funds To Launch AI-Driven Modules Logistics intelligence platform for online retailers ClickPost raised $6 million in a Series A funding led by Inflexor Ventures partners and Athera Venture Partners. Logistics intelligence platform for online retailers ClickPost said that it raised $6 million in a Series A funding led by Inflexor Ventures partners and Athera Venture Partners. The round also saw participation from Riverwalk Holdings and an existing investor, Rebright Partners. According to the company, the funding will be used for launching new AI-driven modules, global growth and hiring. “E-commerce is a space where vertical AI products will see a lot of adoption as brands look to grow more efficiently and compete with the likes of Amazon who have vast resources to provide a more data-driven experience to shoppers,” Naman Vijay, the Co-Founder and CEO of ClickPost, said in a statement. “This puts the onus on SaaS companies like us to provide solutions that keep brands at the forefront of innovation,” he added. Moreover, the company said more than 300 enterprises across India, North America, APAC, and the Middle East use ClickPost. “ClickPost’s depth, agility, flexibility, and data advantage place them well to deliver this, in India as well as in global markets. In this SupplyChain247 article Cleo's Frank Kenney shares his thoughts with Editorial Director Andy Gray about the likely downstream supply chain impact of an October U.S. Ports strike. Kenney says, “I anticipate a significant increase in traffic through the Port of Halifax and Montreal, primarily due to their proximity to rail carriers. This makes them ideal for inbound and outbound freight. However, the challenge lies in moving goods in and out of Halifax, which often involves rail transportation through the Midwest of the United States, with Chicago as a major hub. Berthing at Port Newark in New York offers easier access to East Coast highways and rail systems, but Chicago lies 960 miles to the west, adding at least a day to move freight from there to key hubs in the east. The bottleneck is likely to occur at Port Huron, Michigan. This combination of factors—added transit days, double border crossings, maritime operations in Halifax, and rail in Huron—will not be optimal.” And … “The lingering volatility of the rail worker situation in Canada and the current U.S. election could also contribute to increased demand. The workers employed by the container terminals on the U.S. East Coast were very vocal about stopping the progress of #automation of work at those terminals. The word 'automation' has many meanings in context of the work done by the terminal, so no wonder that various "experts" made themselves available to the media with varying results. The cacophony of correct and erroneous "knowledge" is staggering. The voices of people who could explain this all correctly, in words that a layman can understand, are few and far between. What do you think of this CBS news item? Would that allow people to really understand? After reading this quote from Kent Gourdin, I really wondered: "Machines, I think, can do the job as well, but people are faster. I've been to automated terminals and it's just slower." This creates the impression that the issue is the "speed" of work, even though automation is about the consistent timing of each work action and the fact that a machine can operate 24/7 without breaks for smoking, peeing, eating and whatever else has been reserved in the workers' EBA. This is critical to explain easily, because the terminal negotiates with the carriers on precise number of moves in a precise period. It doesn't negotiate on speed, but on the consistency of reaching the contracted number. While that move represents the ship-berth action, there is still the distance to cover between where the container rests on shore and the berth aka yard planning. We don't need the machines to race around the yard at 30 mph with a human driver; 10 mph, but consistently, with robotic driver would do AS LONG AS we fulfill on the contracted number of moves. Ignore the strange errors e.g. that the containers need to be "latched" or that when a machine lifting container breaks, we can somehow switch to manual lifting of the boxes. Mentions of the digital twins and #blockchain needed to record the moves and the location of the container in the yard or on the ship nicely muddied the waters (neither is needed nor used for that at all). The whole #information #technology part of the article is too shallow to understand what really goes on in the terminal. Read the article anyways, just to be able to explain/clarify points during any discussions related to the topic. January 15th 2025 is coming, so there will be plenty of more alarmist news sometime after the New Year's Day.
