Saturn PCB Design, Inc. Okay...last update on the 433MHz FOB...maybe ;) I made a few design changes in order to increase battery life and also increased the length of the antenna. Thanks to William Zandvliet for the Johanson Technology Balun tip, so far it seems to work well. New range testing results are in: 0dBm output power, board in the plastic case, plastic case in my hand and a receiver that could be optimized a little better...1044 feet!!! (318.2112 Meters) Question to all: The FOB case in the top left of the embedded picture is just like the one I use (it's a pretty standard style used by many) BUT, it's translucent and I want it. Does anyone know who can supply these? They are very nice in that you don't need to punch a hole in the case to "get the LED out" 😃 #pcbdesign #pcbassembly #pcbmanufacturing #electronicsengineering #electronics #antennas #rfengineering

Welcome to V.E.R.N At high-frequency signals, the signal traces on a PCB act like transmission lines, which have an impedance at each point on the signal trace trajectory. If this impedance varies from one point to the next one, there will be a signal reflection whose magnitude will depend on the difference between the two impedances. The larger the difference is, the greater the reflection will be. Common #DFM issues to avoid in your PCB design 🟥Floating copper/solder mask slivers create antennas Slivers are small free-floating wedges of copper (conductive) or solder mask (non-conductive) on the plane. These can get redeposited to other copper pieces or exposed copper to create shorts. If they are big enough to not float then they form an antenna, responsible for noise and other interferences within the board. Now, the question is, why do they create an antenna? Because they have no grounding, they act as a signal catcher. 💡How to avoid copper slivers? I’m often asked why a PCB fabricator or OEM should consider switching to direct metallization over electroless copper. Electroless copper is the incumbent process for making holes conductive before copper electroplating in circuit board fabrication. Switching to a new system, even considering the benefits, can seem daunting and risky. However, electroless copper is a highly energy-intensive process that uses hazardous chemicals and consumes substantial amounts of water and power.    The benefits of carbon-based, direct metallization, which include reliability and performance benefits as well as environmental, addresses concerns over a process change. Direct metallization eliminates the need for hazardous chemicals, dramatically reduces chemical and water consumption and delivers direct copper-to-copper bonding at the hole wall interface, to name just a few of the benefits.
