DBIA Western Pacific Region Young Professionals teamed up with National Organization of Minority Architects Developing Professionals for our 2nd Annual Summer Social & Panel and it was a phenomenal event! Everyone was energized & our incredible panel knocked it out of the park by sharing genuine insight & advice on how to work cohesively with other teams on a project, understand what is important to each other, realign when things aren't going to plan, approach difficult conversations, elevate a team & work together toward a common goal. Big thank you to our Panel Monica Amalfitano PE, LEED, DBIA, Angela Perry, Nicholas Holtz, P.E., Elise McCurley, Austin Allen, and our moderators Kari Stachowiak & Diana L. Hernandez. Panel Themes: “Find common ground” “Learn how people operate” “Build trust with other members of the team” “Have difficult conversations as soon as an issue arises” “Be open-minded and curious” “It isn’t about you winning, it's about the team winning” Favorite Points: Monica – Constant growth & learning is important. Every project you'll learn something new about people, designing and building. Go into every day thinking that you will learn something new, things can change & be open to it. You don’t always have to be right & there might be a better way to do something you hadn't thought of before. Elise – Attend the team outings & get to know the people on your project. It's important to be in out-of-office settings to be reminded that we're all people who have lives outside of the project. It makes it easier to collaborate, explore new ideas & have difficult conversations. Do this on Design-Bid-Build/CM@Risk projects too. Nick – Don’t just call people with bad news, reach out about good things & general check-ins, so if you need to call to work through something, the other person isn’t assuming the worst. Create a process with regular updates of potential cost/time items impacts being tracked to resolve them quickly or proactively to where the impact doesn’t occur. Angela – Foster employees to become better leaders. Our common goal is for the entire group to win, sometimes there is a “give and take” & you may not “win” but it's about wanting each other to be successful & sometimes letting things go for the greater good of the project. Don’t destroy a relationship you have worked hard to develop. Kari – It's our responsibility to mentor the next generation as we go & keep in mind that the person we are working with may be new & talk with them from a place to help them understand so that they continue to grow & get better.

The GSA picked HENSEL PHELPS for a $274.7 million design-build contract to expand a border station in Douglas, Arizona. The New Douglas Commercial Land Port of Entry project is funded under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act, according to the agency. In all, the GSA plans to upgrade 38 federal land ports of entry along the United States’ northern and southern borders using $1 billion in IRA and IIJA funds, with the goal of modernizing the facilities while boosting domestic clean manufacturing and sustainable technologies. The agency aims to use low embodied carbon asphalt, concrete, glass and steel materials for the Douglas project, which will be designed to achieve LEED-Gold standards. Our ATLAS PROJECT team is helping to fundraise for REBUILDING TOGETHER SOUTHERN NEVADA. They are an organization that fixes critical home issues for LOW INCOME VETERANS, SENIORS, AND INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES. (Replaces broken toilets, heaters, handicap hand rails, lighting, yard work, ramps, etc).     We are NOW in process of raising $104,000 to repair 10 homes in the Las Vegas area. We are looking for Donations and Volunteers to sign up to be on their list to receive an email to be potential future volunteers to help for half a day on these projects.
