Having been at this #martech thing for a minute, Scott's framing and reframing of marketing and martech both surprised / didn't surprise me one tiny bit. Since day one we've been asking "Is martech a thing?" We asked it so often that it became a joke of sorts. After all, if martech wasn't a thing, why on Earth were we building a brand around it? The CMO survey cited in Scott Brinker's post highlights for me, the core of what's going on in marketing today which is that you cannot do modern marketing without technology. It's like air at this point. No technology, no marketing. I'd bet that the 24.7% of CMOs reporting that their companies are not using marketing technology isn't a reflection of their competency or knowledge of their organization's stack but something much, much simpler. It's that MARTECH IS MARKETING - and for at least some of those CMOs, they don't care to make the distinction. And that's why we run the MarTech Conference and write on MarTech.org - because it's impossible today to "do marketing" without "marketing technology." PLEX, the FAST channel platform, announced its becoming the largest free streamer on the planet with an almost unheard of 1,112 channels. Library scale matters, speed to market matters (especially given acceleration of broadcast to CTV spend), and content variety matters, but I can't help but think of what's missing in terms of user experience, discovery and programming. One of my biggest complaints about AI these days is it can, at times, feel like the deepest of vaporware. So much talk about it, and no real execution. Not so in this case! Great read, and +1,000 to this quote: "As Marques Brownlee cleverly summed up Apple’s WWDC24, 'AI is a feature, not a product.' We are focusing too much on branding AI as the product. AI deserves attention, but end users don’t use AI for the sake of using AI. They use AI because they want to solve a problem or achieve a goal. In other words, integrating AI features seamlessly into the overall offerings to help the users out is more important than throwing starbursts and gradients at them for AI awareness. Most of the time, users don’t even need to know they are using AI."

I had an industrial (B2B) client tell me yesterday that the product insights I provided for them back in 2012 & 2014 led them to significantly redesign their products, and that these products soon became marketplace "rock stars." The result: their competition needed to play catch up for many years, including redesigning their own products to stay relevant. I've often been asked, "What's your favorite type of research?"
