Did you know that July is BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month? The much-needed spotlight on racial inclusion over the last few years has highlighted the lack of dialogue and resources available in the workplace for addressing the specific mental health needs for BIPOC professionals. Not to mention, many organizations’ existing mental health inclusion practices minimize the experiences of BIPOC professionals, rather than supporting our needs. To give you a sense of the toll that racism and other oppression can have on BIPOC mental health, I wanted to share some eye-opening facts*. Did you know: ▶️ People who identify as BIPOC are less likely to have access to mental health services, less likely to seek out treatment, more likely to receive low or poor quality of care, and more likely to end services early ▶️ Black Americans are 20% more likely to experience serious mental health problems than the general population ▶️ Approximately 23% of Indigenous Americans live with a mental illness ▶️ People who identify as belonging to two or more races are more likely than all other racial/ethnocultural groups to have reported experiences with mental illness, followed by Indigenous Americans ▶️ Indigenous Americans have the highest rates of post-traumatic stress disorder than any other racial/ethnocultural group These data points drive home the fact that even when we, as BIPOC, do our best to look after our mental health and wellness through therapy, mindfulness, self-care, and prioritizing rest and healing, structural racism continues to have an adverse impact on our health. And this is why we must make BIPOC mental health inclusion a priority in our workplaces. For leaders, here’s bhasin consulting inc.’s advice and guidance: work to disrupt biases around mental health, focus on creating cultures of psychological safety, hold meaningful conversations about BIPOC mental health, and engage in active allyship. It was a seriously cool hands-on experience that's all about nurturing growth and practical learning. Together, we're breaking oppressive workplace norms and crafting a safe space where diverse talents can thrive side by side, generation by generation. A+ is a lovely example of how diversity initiatives can kickstart innovation, knowledge sharing, and community building. DEI programs give BIPOC people with disabilities in the live event industry practical skills and insights into creating experiences that are accessible to everyone. Mental health conversations can be challenging—especially for Black girls who often lack the tools and support to express their emotions. At MH Boxes, we’re working to change that—one box at a time. Here’s why MH Boxes are so important: 📊 56% of recipients said they don’t talk about mental health with their peers. 📊 34% said they don’t talk about mental health with their parents. Why It Matters: Stigma and lack of communication create barriers to addressing mental health. MH Boxes provide tools, resources, and encouragement to help girls start these critical conversations. The Impact So Far: ✨ 90% of recipients said their MH Box made them feel more comfortable talking about their mental health. Offer accessible interview options Could your interview process be restricting great candidates with disabilities? Providing some flexibility or accessibility options in the interview process could open up your hiring prospects and help you provide a more inclusive workplace. Consider offering remote or virtual interviews and providing accomodations such as assistive technology or wheelchair accessibility. Remember that there are many challenges someone may face in getting to an interview, and be upfront in your job ad about the accomodations you can make. Don’t forget to also consider those with other responsibilities – restrictive interview processes could also create challenges for certain age groups or working parents. In addition to the accessibility options, consider the times you’re offering for job interviews, or if it has to take place in an office, if the role is largely remote. Or if multiple rounds of interviews are going to necessary. Don’t let your interview process put off the best candidates.
