As I reflect on my journey as an advocate for change, I find profound inspiration in the intersections of my identity as a girl, a youth advocate, and a passionate believer in climate justice. 🌍✨ From my earliest days, I understood the power of voice and action. As a girl, I navigated a world of expectations and limitations, yet found within myself an unwavering determination to defy norms and carve out my path. This journey taught me resilience, empathy, and the profound impact of representation. Empowering youth became a natural extension of this journey. Witnessing the enthusiasm, creativity, and unyielding optimism of young minds, I recognized the urgent need to amplify their voices and provide platforms for their visions. Together, we are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but catalysts for change today. Yet, amidst these passions, one cause emerged as a call for our generation: climate justice. The urgency of the climate crisis demands immediate and concerted action. It transcends borders, ideologies, and demographics, affecting every facet of our lives and disproportionately impacting the most vulnerable among us. In advocating for climate justice, I see the convergence of my identities and passions. It is a fight for equity, for intergenerational solidarity, and for the preservation of our planet for future generations. It is a call to reimagine systems, amplify marginalized voices, and cultivate sustainable solutions rooted in empathy and collaboration. I am filled with hope and determination. I disagree. This article by Philanthropy Asia Alliance claims: “Giving today is moving towards catalytic philanthropy, away from traditional cheque-book giving, mostly as a result of the desire for more evidence-based outcomes.” I never knew a donor who wrote a cheque without evidence-based outcomes.  I prefer to celebrate ‘traditional cheque-book giving’, for that is how many important institutions, such as Nanyang Technological University Singapore and Tan Tock Seng Hospital, were founded. Donor cheques continue to fuel excellence in universities and hospitals. ‘Traditional cheque-book giving’ also funds a huge range of arts organisations and vital social care causes, especially through Community Chest Singapore, with catalytic philanthropic impact. Philanthropic public private partnerships have a long pedigree in Singapore too. Philanthropist Tan Kim Seng partnered with the authorities to fund the first public water works in 1857. Singapore government has for years partnered with philanthropists by matching gifts to education dollar for dollar. However, where this article makes an important point is the scale of climate change and I commend the efforts of Philanthropy Asia Alliance in creating partnerships to meet this challenge.

Our community-centred Developmental Evaluation (DE) of the Synergia Transition and Resilience Climate Action Program serves both as a summary of learnings and as a framework for employing a reciprocal, iterative and transparent approach to evaluating complex and emergent community programs. Uniquely, our evaluation utilized rapid ethnography, speculative fiction, art-making and somatic practices and aimed to surface the precursors for community engagement in climate action across diverse communities in Canada. Findings describe challenges across communities with differing levels of diversity and resources, the impact of privilege, trauma and perceived self-agency, and the opportunity to centre health, social connection and transcendence to imagine new futures and establish a foundation on which to build community resilience.

Coming out of a team retreat and I can feel the new creative energy flowing. As I continue my own learning on event and community management, learning new tools, tips, and strategies I'll be sharing what I learn here. Whether the technical or the strategic, the nitty-gritty or the broad, I'm excited to look back next year and see how far I've gone. Lesson 1- The broad: Get focused. Really dial in on your specific audience. Others may join, but knowing who you want in the room will help filter out the feedback you should take and what can be filtered out. The technical: Layering videos in Canva with a crop effect can create this selective focus effect shown below, all while using the free version! A win-win.

To build and sustain a community based ecosystem there are essential prerequisites and ongoing priorities that must be prioritized. The first thing to note is that you can’t prevent the disportionate presence of interpersonal violence while being forced to ignore and circumvent the subject of structural violence and the overwhelming presence of systemic inequities in those same environments. Every Friday, WSS holds a collaborative educational event on Zoom where we learn about climate crisis efforts from individuals and organizations across the world, thereby developing pathways in which we can work together to solve the climate crisis. Speakers present for 30 minutes followed by time for Q & A and discussion. This coming Friday, April 26th at 9:00 AM PST / 12:00 PM EST, we will be hearing from Wageesha Sharma who will share her research on mitigating greenhouse gases and replacing plastics with biological methods. She will also discuss how university-level research can create systems that improve our communities. About Wageesha: Wageesha grew up in the majestic Himalayas, where her deep-rooted values of community, sustainability, and harmony with nature took shape. As a Ph.D. student in Chemical and Biological Engineering at South Dakota Mines, her research focuses on mitigating greenhouse gases and replacing plastics using biological methods. Her work is driven by a commitment to create innovative sustainable solutions with broader and practical implications. She aims to create a communication bridge between research and the wider community, ensuring that valuable insights and knowledge are shared. Commitment 1: Embedding CEA Beyond Policies and SOPs In my previous post, I highlighted the importance of integrating Community Engagement and Accountability (CEA) into humanitarian organizations' core strategies and processes. However, this integration must surpass policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The challenge we face today is to ensure that CEA becomes more than just a formality – it must be a lived practice embedded in our daily operations. Reflecting on my own experience, both as the Head of the CEA Department at the Ukrainian Red Cross Society (URCS) and my previous role as a Safeguarding Focal Point, I’ve come to realize that while training modules, e-learning and onboarding processes can create awareness, they often fall short of building real, actionable change. Many of us have been through mandatory courses, checking boxes, and racing through online training, frequently forgetting the key lessons once they’re completed. Safeguarding, feedback mechanisms, and community engagement are essential, but without a conscious effort to make them more than just checklists, their potential impact remains untapped. From Formality to Practice At URCS, the largest humanitarian operation in Ukraine, we are taking significant steps to move beyond formality. We believe that CEA should be at the heart of everything we do. This is not just about meeting donor requirements or ticking boxes for the sake of compliance. It’s about building genuine trust with the communities we serve, listening to their needs, and involving them in the decisions that affect them. Although there aren’t many examples globally where CEA has been fully integrated into daily operations with meaningful, measurable results, I firmly believe that we, as part of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society, are on the right path. We aim to demonstrate that true accountability to the affected populations is not only achievable but critical to the success of any humanitarian operation. Looking Ahead: Commitment 2 As we continue to expand and deepen our efforts in CEA, I will explore the second commitment in my next post. This commitment focuses on how we ensure that community voices are actively involved in shaping the programs and services designed to support them. Stay tuned for a deep dive into how URCS is implementing this commitment and the tangible results we are already seeing. Our goal is simple but profound: to prove that CEA, when done right, not only improves our operations but transforms the way we respond to crises.

Queer youth across the Asia-Pacific are leading the charge to resist systemic oppression, reclaim erased histories, and transform the socio-cultural norms that marginalize LGBTQIAP+ communities. The Beijing Platform for Action offers a framework for inclusion, but its promises remain unfulfilled without grassroots leadership and meaningful action. On Inclusivity and Trust: The very core of the work is really in care and in trust. It’s really caring more not only to the environment but also with the people that we are with in the movement and with the people that we work with.
