Not all emails have to pitch their products at the end... Sometimes, sending helpful, niche-relevant content on the same few themes is all it takes to keep people buying. For example, an animal-based supplement company might send, oh, I don't know, a recipe that fits the audience's dietary standards. They don't even have to tie it back to their products. Throw a "Visit Store" button (or two) in there without a pitch and you'll make sales anyways. This approach cultivates less of an "eCom store" image and more of a "source of lifestyle wisdom" image... a fine way to strengthen customer retention. Do we need key performance indicators (KPIs)? As I'm generally working from home I often track my DDII (Daily Dog Interruption Index) and my DPSR (Desk Plant Survival Rate). As a support agency for website owners, we see a few websites and more than a few owners and marketers not using KPIs other than accounting. And it's no surprise to be honest. Firstly, they can be bloody boring but they can also lead to a narrow focus, overlooking broader opportunities and stifling innovation. They can seem overly stuffy and corporate and result in a distorted view of success, and we've all seen films (or lived corporate lives) where meeting the numbers becomes more important than just doing good (or even customer satisfaction). If you are self employed or a very small company, it can also seem a bit pointless, there is enough to do without measuring as well. In Jellyhound, internally, we use them for accountability, focus, decision making and for identifying areas of improvement. Meetings per hour, coffee per website etc. But I often wonder, am I tracking the right thing? Am I tracking too much? I do have a tendancy to want to track EVERYTHING! I'm interested to hear your thoughts, do you use them? If not, why not? Do you find them indispensable, or do you see areas where they might fall short?

I’m all for an insights-packed, “punch in your face” content newsletter. Building trust, authority, and audiences are pillars of email marketing. But ultimately, all of our email efforts 𝚊̶𝚛̶𝚎̶... 𝚜̶𝚑̶𝚘̶𝚞̶𝚕̶𝚍̶... 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 to be judged on their ROI abilities. And I know the pushback I’ll get is “𝑤𝑒 𝑑𝑜𝑛’𝑡 𝑤𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑒 𝑡𝑜𝑜 𝑠𝑎𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑦…” – ya, ya, I get it. I, too, just want to read about the See & Spray tech without getting a $25K sprayer upgrade kit shoved down my digital inbox throat. But after sending a lot of emails with my team (to the tune of over 2 million), I’ve noted that if you lead with 95% value and use 5% of the email to sell, you’re doing your job. That ratio satisfies top-of-the-funnel readers who just want to learn about the latest See & Spray tech without feeling pressured. At the same time, it gently scratches the conversion itch for bottom-of-the-funnel folks ready to take action. No one wants to link to your money pages. So what do you do instead? First, write content that slaps. Don’t make it commercial in nature whatsoever. This content should provide VALUE to readers. Personally, I love making these very opinionated. For instance, if I’m a fishing website, I might write an article on the issues overfishing is causing our planet. Some people will hate it. But those that love it will share the shit out of it. Then, send outreach emails asking for backlinks. Once you’re done pitching, edit the article. Add links to your money and lead pages. Take all that external link juice you’ve gotten and push it to the right pages via internal links. But remember, you gotta write content that slaps.

This platform is littered with terrible writing advice. Writers with big audiences often forget how *difficult* it is to catch and keep attention online when you’re getting started. So, if you have a big audience already, this isn’t for you. Last week, I logged onto Medium – where I had less than 1,000 followers – to a big surprise. One of my posts had gone semi-viral. +400 followers overnight. Now, I’m up over 1k. But here’s the thing. That short essay is of a similar quality to the other 25+ I’ve posted on there over the last 9 or so months. I didn’t do anything special. Yet that one hit and the others didn’t. That gets me to point number 1: “Quality” is extremely subjective. Something I love, you may hate. Write what you like and try to find the overlap with what your ideal reader likes, and then play in that overlap. Unless you’re a unicorn (I wasn’t!), you’ll need to write a lot to find that overlap. Volume negates luck. Point 2: “You are the niche” is worthless advice. What does it even mean? I don’t think anybody knows (but it sounds good). Instead, think in categories. My broad category is ‘storytelling.’ I come at it from a lens of fiction and writing. Others come at the same category from a different angle. @Nicolas Cole has a great article called “How To Create A Category Of 1” that I recommend to go way deeper on this idea. Point 3: Make a Promise, and Pay it Off. Think of your headline as a “Promise” to your reader. The rest of your writing should “Pay it Off.” If it doesn’t, it’s click bait. If it does, you’ve done a good job. For a quick edit, I read my headline and simply ask, “Did this Promise get answered?” Point 4: The easiest way to get engagement on any platform is to talk about how to grow on that platform. If that’s true, then it follows that the bar for that category of writing is lower. This isn’t necessarily bad – but it does lead to many new folks believing bad writing advice. Instead, if you’re not writing about how to grow on LI, go find 3-5 people who write stuff that you enjoy reading in other categories. Tear apart why their writing resonates. What’s their style? What tone do they use? Is it narrative or how-to? How do they structure their ideas? Most importantly – how can you apply those principles to your writing? Point 5: Deleting adverbs and being perfect with your grammar doesn’t really matter. Now, you don’t want huge mistakes. That’ll distract the reader. But one “very” or a misplaced comma isn’t going to matter. Don’t let perfection get in the way of sharing your ideas with the world. Point 6: View everything as a suggestion. I once read a story about Stephen King never using outlines. Later, I read a story about Joseph Heller swearing by outlines. You may not be writing books but that takeaway is the same – what works for me may not work for you. I’m out of characters. Rant over. This is an interesting trend we're seeing in discovery calls. Bloggers who were hit by a Google update have lost revenue. With that loss, they are finding it's too much to manage to make back the income so they sell the site. We're getting those buyers. They have one goal --> boost traffic using Pinterest knowing that RPMs from Pinterest are higher than Google and making the site profitable again. Pinterest is still a viable traffic tool.

The 3 biggest blog post mistakes cannabis and hemp companies make (and how you can do better): 1. Not targeting a keyword If you're posting the occasional blog for social sharing purposes, not having a keyword focus is fine. But if you want your content to build authority and contribute to your money page rankings and revenue, it must be targeting a keyword. This is pre-requisite for all the other steps that go into creating a piece of content that's helpful to searchers, and therefore ranks and acts as an entry point into your brand. 2. Targeting a keyword, but creating thin content Choosing a keyword is the first step, but sticking it in the URL and title and then following it up with a short post is rarely a winning recipe. Instead, you need to ensure your post is COMPREHENSIVE: it should be mutually exclusive (no irrelevant subtopics), but collectively exhaustive (covers all relevant subtopics). The foundation for this is search engine result page (SERP) analysis: examining the top-ranking results to determine what you need in your article to rank. But don't take everything at face value, because the top-ranking articles are just a proxy for what people want to learn when they search a certain term. 3. Targeting keywords that don't build topical authority You can create a blog post properly and it can start ranking, but it will still be useless to your business if it's targeting a topic that's irrelevant to your product line. The first two issues are tactical issues: this is a strategic issue. Targeting informational keywords that map to your product line is how you build your site's authority for these topics, therefore allowing your category/product pages to rank, which makes you more $$. So don't target random keywords that you thing are related. Get methodical: → Targeting the 5-10 highest-volume informational keywords related to each category → Write the easiest ones first → Link them to the category page and to each other - Too many cannabis/hemp brands hear about the importance of blog content and then go crazy and start publishing as much as possible. But I can 100% promise you it will be a waste of time if you're not: → Targeting relevant keywords → Creating comprehensive content Simple, but not easy. And yet, this is how you win. ✌

(Unaware of their problem) vs "How to fix your advertising material." (Aware of their problem) 3. Your Hook... (is kinda bad). Your headline/hook is worth 80 cents of every dollar you spend on paid ads. Hooks are tricky. Because it needs to do many things all at once: Immediately communicate immense value. Be immediately understandable and reach the prospect exactly where they're at (customer awareness), sometimes more. All of that packed into just a few words. This takes years of practice.

Good copy is risky copy. It spits truth plain and simple. And it’s not always soft on the ears. Some will praise your boldness. Others will shun you for being rude. But neither will forget you. Copy needs to stick and (sometimes) sting if it’s going to land. That’s why 90% of Startups fail. Why? They’re afraid to “go there”. They don’t stand out, reach out, and connect with people’s pain. Sure, they might solve problems. But they brush over pain. Because it hurts too much. This makes it hard for people to find a reason to pick your business over your competitors. A client of mine once told me that if she could give any advice to new business owners, it’d be to hire a copywriter. One that isn’t afraid to speak the simple truth. One that doesn’t gloss over customer’s pain and unspoken desires. You know, the longings they dream about but are too embarrassed to say out loud. Say it for them!
