To those in the health and wellness space—especially outside traditional healthcare systems—your market is booming. But so is your identity crisis. Consider the name of your category: is it holistic medicine? Complementary and alternative medicine? Functional medicine? Each label reflects the complexity—and confusion—inherent in this rapidly growing industry. Here’s my advice as someone who consumes these products and services and works with businesses in this space. Your market is thriving, largely unregulated, and focused on health. This makes your positioning and messaging more crucial than ever. Without tight positioning and messaging, here's what happens from the consumer's perspective: It's Wednesday morning, and my energy levels haven’t felt right for three weeks. I decide to visit the IV Superstore after work. They offer 18 different drip therapies—basic hydration to more complex drips like NAD+—with playful names like Beast Mode, Jet Setter, and Addiction Breaker. Intrigued, I choose Beast Mode, which promises to relieve pain, boost energy, support heart function, improve sleep, prevent illness, and—who wouldn’t want this?—enhance my romantic life. Let’s goooo! Three weeks later I visit the IV Superstore website, and they’re offering some new services. There’s this thing called ozone therapy. Oh, and don’t forget the bioidentical hormone replacement. And, of course, contrast therapy, which is a fancy way of saying you go from a really hot environment (sauna) to a really cold environment (cryotherapy chamber). And by all means, don’t forget the hyperbaric chamber. We all need more and better oxygen, amiright? And guess what? Each of those new services offers the following benefits: relieves pain, boosts energy, supports heart function, improves sleep, prevents illness, and because why not, it might enhance your romantic life. But here’s the truth: panaceas don’t exist. No single $250 service solves every health issue. So, my advice to health and wellness businesses: yes, your market is expanding, and yes, many of these services can benefit people. But resist the urge to offer everything to everyone. Focus. Identify the services you believe in and are great at delivering, decide who your ideal customer is, and get laser-focused on positioning and messaging those services to your target audience. Otherwise, you risk becoming just another “me too” in an increasingly crowded space.

 You don’t always need a full website redesign to make an impact! We were pumped (pun intended) when a former Barrel client from years prior Willow Innovations, Inc. reached out looking for help improving e-commerce. In 2018, Willow changed the game for nursing moms with the first-ever wireless, hands-free wearable breast pump. Designed for convenience, it allows moms to pump discreetly, no matter where they are. Their latest model syncs with a companion app, offering tools that help moms track everything from pump sessions to milk volume. We started our engagement with a comprehensive e-commerce audit, analyzing everything from performance metrics to the customer journey and technical setup—resulting in 100 pages of insights. Based on our findings, we put together a two-phase roadmap. The first phase involved consolidating their headless ContentStack setup into Shopify and redesigning critical e-commerce pages. We focused on creating a more integrated and informed shopping experience while helping Willow get the most out of the Shopify ecosystem.
