Government grants and contracts are the second largest sources of funding for non-profits. and "when the availability of public funding for nonprofits decreases, the communities nonprofits serve feel the effects,” according to a mid-October report from the Urban Institute. The report takes a deep dive into trends in the relationship between governments and nonprofits, and some of its findings were startling. For example: * “Many nonprofits that discussed government funding did not go on to seek or apply for it." * "Arts, culture, and humanities nonprofits were more likely than human services and other nonprofits to seek or apply for government grants and/or contracts at any level of government. They were also more likely than health and other nonprofits to receive them." * "Nonprofits that receive government funding were more likely than those that do not to participate in advocacy (60 versus 42 percent), public education (78 versus 63 percent), and voter engagement (23 versus 9 percent) in 2022–2023." This #podcast with Ben Kittelson of ELGL: Engaging Local Government Leaders was a fun one to do -- and timely to share on #EarthDay. We all come to our careers in different ways. Mine was definitely a windy path: most of it as a fed at US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, plus some time in the nonprofit sector at AARP and now National Housing Trust. This podcast conversation wove together all of that in a discussion of why and how we need to center the needs of older adults in our #climateresilience planning. TL/DR: 1. Older adults are disproportionately impacted by climate change; we need to acknowledge that and work backwards from there in our planning. 2. Doesn't matter what we term we use (#smartgrowth, #sustainablecommunities, #agefriendly), the solutions require better land use decisions about housing, transportation, infrastructure and more. 3. But you have to be willing to invest to cash out. Signal Three: COUNSELLING [EXPANDED] Community is NOT a replacement for therapy - and it doesn’t need to be traditional. Counselling is evolving to get as niche and novel as our needs. - From group therapy “Should I break up with the City?” sessions in Berlin - Amie Lin - Susie Vana, who specialises in mother-daughter relationships - Stylist Magazine - Self Space’s “Walk Club” aided by conversation prompts - To [FINALLY] therapists like Esther Perel unpacking one of our most vital support systems, our mates, via friendship x relationship sessions Support needs to shift to accommodate all of life’s chapters. "During election years, advertising spaces become battlegrounds of competing political messages.... Ad spending from political advertising alone is projected to increase by $12.32 billion this year, according to a report by research firm Insider Intelligence." But many social platforms have limited or banned political ads... and it's always changing. Pinterest, LinkedIn, Amazon, and TikTok are prohibiting political ads. Reddit is limiting political ads. Some recs to cut through the clutter: - Improve the quality of your ads - Content is king: Use compelling messaging and meaningful storytelling - Stay "on brand" and true to you - maintain consistent messaging, tone, and voice - Don't risk it all by chasing news cycles or trends that don't align with your company/org values and deviate from your brand identity - Focus on retention and engagement strategies to keep existing customers, advocates, or supporters engaged - Personalize your content to build and maintain a strong relationship with your base - Offer compelling offers, such as contests or incentives #ads #marketing #politics #election2024 #digital Shoreline Strategies LLC
