The key question in this awesome post: “What should TV networks and non-social streamers do? It's not enough to throw a fancy upfront party and invite celebrities onto the stage.” My thoughts: - Tubi ‘s STubios is a bold step in the right direction. It may take time to connect audiences between “traditional” streaming and social - but if they have the courage to stay the course it will yield dividends with both advertisers AND audience! - Roku ‘s snagging inexpensive live sports rights from the MLB was the play of the week as this is one area of fandom that yields consistent dividends. With respect to traditional linear networks, lean into areas like nostalgia and be experimental with content… they have tons of “inventory” to play around with unique programming that could yield new relevance and audience connection. To quote FDR, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself!” In desperate times, try new things and stop looking to (irrelevant) past success to solve an uncertain future.

A recent Wall Street Journal article by Isabella Simonetti (gifted link below) reveals that TV networks are embracing their aging viewership and challenging the notion that younger demographics are the most valuable targets for advertisers. With the median age of viewers now in their 50s and 60s (MTV viewers average 51 years old!) for many networks, executives argue that reaching consumers based on their purchasing habits, rather than age, is the key to effective advertising. Older viewers often have more disposable income, are less sensitive to price increases, and are still making brand decisions. By focusing on the mass-market reach of TV and targeting people likely to buy a product, regardless of age, media buyers are adapting to the changing landscape of television viewership. As media and entertainment professionals, it's crucial to recognize the importance of this demographic shift and adapt our approaches accordingly.
