It's a familiar story in the tech world: a big company buys a smaller one, and customers are left wondering what's next. That's exactly what's happening with Broadcom's acquisition of VMware, and many customers are now looking for the exit. A year after Broadcom's $69 billion purchase of VMware, the virtualization giant's customers are feeling the pinch. From rising costs to the end of perpetual license sales, Broadcom's changes have left many unhappy campers. Some are even exploring alternative solutions, ready to bid farewell to VMware. It's a tough situation, but one that highlights the potential pitfalls of corporate mergers and acquisitions. #TechTroubles #VMwareExodus #CustomerConcerns

This article brings back a lot of memories from my Wall Street days when Spencer Mitchell and I used to cover the semiconductor space. In 2015, Avago Technologies acquired a much bigger Broadcom but retained the AVGO stock ticker. Avago’s FBAR filters that are used in cellular and wireless communications systems were a huge growth driver. Avago’s main competitor in the advanced filters space was TriQuint Semiconductor’s BAW (bulk acoustic wave) filters. Triquint merged with RFMD to form what is now called Qorvo, Inc. However, Qorvo hasn’t made the kind of acquisitions that Avago did and this is reflected in their market caps: Avago/Broadcom at $637 B and Qorvo at $10 B. #semiconductors #wireless #bawfilters

ByteDance and Broadcom Partner to Develop Custom 5-Nanometer AI Processor ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has collaborated with US chipmaker Broadcom to create a custom 5-nanometer AI processor. This strategic partnership aims to ensure compliance with US export regulations and will entrust production to TSMC in Taiwan, set to commence next year. The objective is to establish a dependable supply of high-performance AI chips while simultaneously reducing costs. Despite ByteDance's active exploration of generative AI and its integration in TikTok, the company encounters limitations in accessing AI chips, putting it at a potential disadvantage compared to rivals like Meta. This move emphasizes the critical significance of AI chip development in the tech industry, wherein competing entities such as Meta and Microsoft are also advancing their respective AI chip technologies. # Thank you Lucia Martinez for your submission!

"It used to take 8 to 12 weeks to get a report from request to production. With Incorta, business users can do that on their own, instantaneously” (Ajit Oak, Head of Business Intelligence at Broadcom). Here was Broadcom's challenge: data stored across multiple complex business systems made it difficult to analyze fast enough. The team relied on disparate software solutions, including Workday, Oracle ERP, Model N, Oracle Demantra, and Microsoft Excel. Despite investments in a traditional data warehouse and multiple data marts, generating a new analytical dashboard or report took 6-12 weeks. The delay between business requests and production was a critical pain point. Alan Davidson, Chief Information Officer at Broadcom, explained, “Our employees can’t wait weeks for the information they need to do their jobs. But at the same time, we have billions of rows of data in our database. It’s no small challenge to quickly slice and dice that amount of information.” ➡ Broadcom needed a solution that could: Reduce the time to deliver information to employees. AND Increase department productivity without draining internal resources. Other selection criteria included cost-effectiveness, self-service capability, ease of maintenance, minimal support from other technologies, and easy integration with external applications like Microsoft Excel. Here’s how Incorta solved Broadcom’s challenges: ➡ Instant Workflow With Incorta, IT no longer had to predict requests. We created flexible frameworks allowing business users to slice and dice data themselves. Request-to-production cycles that previously took 12 weeks were now achieved instantly. ➡ Increased Agility and Reduced TCO Incorta’s lightweight technology stack required less time and fewer people for maintenance and management, significantly reducing the total cost of ownership. ➡ Scalable for Growth Following several acquisitions, Broadcom needed to combine and analyze vast amounts of data from acquired organizations. Incorta enabled Broadcom to quickly create analytical applications with this new data, allowing employees to make faster, better-informed decisions during times of rapid change. ➡ Broadcom's Complete Migration to Incorta Cloud Broadcom migrated 100% of its data and infrastructure to the Incorta Cloud, adding more data, gaining faster loading times, and efficiently handling vast amounts of data. This move has significantly enhanced their data processing capabilities, ensuring quicker access to insights and better performance overall. Broadcom (AVGO) shares surged on Thursday as the semiconductor giant announced a 10-for-1 stock split. This strategic decision comes on the heels of a strong second-quarter earnings report, driven by high demand for the company's artificial intelligence products. Want the same data capabilities as Broadcom? You can. Book a 1:1 live demo of our open data delivery platform: https://lnkd.in/gK9hsKkm.

Data Canopy offers opportunities for growth for MSPs, Podcast “Private cloud space over the last few months has become very interesting as VMware has kind of shifted hard with the Broadcom acquisition, and they have very much limited the number of suppliers that they have with their portfolio,” says Charinna Kushnir, Vice President Of Business Development and Strategic Alliances Data Canopy. “Also, many VMware users have experienced at minimum a 20% increase in the price, which has a lot of customers going back and examining other options again. So, Data Canopy was a VMware shop for many, many years. Now we have switched, and we have become a Nutanix shop because it offers many features and a ton of functionality to our end users at a much more effective price point. So that’s sort of where we live on the cloud instance side.” In this podcast, recorded at last week’s MSP Summit, Charinna discusses the data center market, the huge challenges and opportunities #AI is creating, and how #MSPs can get on board. First and foremost, the data center space is one that they can easily leverage. You still have clients that have hardware that are looking for space and power. I have 18 different data centers nationwide and internationally. I do have space and power available for a rack, two racks, or ten racks if that’s what your customer still requires because they still have on-prem hardware, and they’re looking to move it to a data center. So, that is one product that many of our MSP partners are leveraging. The other product that our MSP partners are leveraging very regularly is our private cloud and the ability to take a multi-point private cloud and resell that to their actual end users and provide a much higher margin than they can make selling public cloud. Our program at Data Canopy is focused on the channel and MSPs.” Donna Renee Stephanie Benzik Charlene Ignacio David Jooste

As part of #CRN’s 2024 Storage 100, VirtualZ Computing is featured as a top 50 vendor bringing software capabilities, services and cloud connectivity to storage technology. Joseph Kovar writes, “VirtualZ develops technology that moves data between IBM Z mainframe servers and cloud or on-premises applications and vice versa. The company, which late 2023 exited stealth with $2.2 million in seed funding, is tackling the need for mainframes to run data on the cloud or for cloud applications to run mainframe data without needing custom coding for each instance.” Click here to learn more about Zaac for mainframe to cloud storage: https://lnkd.in/gu78c8EB https://lnkd.in/gaRi-fic #cloudstorage #ibmz #mainframestorage

Technology suppliers, like all companies, are on a never-ending quest to drive top-line growth. Since "growth at all costs" is no longer rewarded by the market, suppliers are altering pricing and packaging bundles to support growth. Cloud licensing model changes are coming, and that means complexity will increase, too. Broadcom is a prime example of cloud licensing model changes (see article) that are causing confusion and concern. Having done this for well over two decades, I can assure you that this is only the tip of the spear. Every technology supplier with both on-premise and cloud offerings will change cloud license models and prices since lifting and shifting licenses doesn't always work—for either party. Traditional approaches and technologies don't typically provide true HYBRID capabilities. To be clear, FinOps as we know it is not hybrid capable, nor is ITAM. A new approach is required and, as always, it involves technology, people and processes. It’s important that you prepare for these changes one way or another. Regardless of your organizational structure, we strongly encourage FinOps, ITAM, Procurement, and Finance teams to collaborate on who is responsible for optimizing, not just counting, software licenses in the cloud. The FinOps Foundation has a great write-up on this topic, which can be found here - https://lnkd.in/gVkVUwF6. #licensing #cloud #itam #finops
