While others have lagged behind in terms of sustainability and open ability to repair, Google has become a surprising ally in the fight for a more sustainable consumer electronics future. They provide actual repair solutions, opposed to others like Apple that provide options with redtape and caveats at every turn. While I still question Google’s stance with AdWords blocking all device repair ad capability, their hardware division is an unquestionable force in the right to repair movement. When partners like Google make changes like this that benefit their customers, it creates value. That value will lead to them eroding market share from handset leaders like Apple and Samsung — and we are already seeing it happen at Fruit Fixed.

What happened to Sony TVs? Arguably, they make the best 2024 displays, but increasingly no one cares. This fast moving video, linked below, is fascinating beyond TV. In addition, knowing how a dominant industry leader could could blow it so badly will be helpful as you consider a new TV. It comes down to the value proposition. You can get incredibly good TVs for far less money and use the money for sound bars, professional installation services and more. I hope you enjoy. You know you’re in a business that matters when lofty publications like The Atlantic weigh-in on 'The Streaming Wars'.    In 'The Dream of Streaming is Dead' (May 16), Jacob Stern scrutinizes the latest bundles from The Walt Disney Company and Comcast to ask if this is any improvement over cable TV. The problem, Stern believes, is that going it alone for the streaming service providers hasn’t actually worked.    We cannot say that. Recent announcements from both Disney and Netflix suggest healthy growth so far this year with Disney+ becoming profitable last quarter. The recent actions taken by the streamers (password sharing crackdown, new pricing tiers) are bringing in more customers and more revenue, and bundling is one of the actions driving growth.   The dream that Stern refers to about streaming being a better, cheaper version of cable was always just that — a dream. Ultimately, someone needs to pay for the content creation — streaming was never going to change those economics. What it has provided is more flexibility and a disaggregation of the larger cable packages, allowing consumers to choose. There is certainly a risk that fixed bundles of streaming services get so large they look more like cable bundles. But consumers want choice: in what services to select, in how to bundle, and on the trade-off between value and flexibility. Are streamers not just recreating the cable package? A federal judge recently blocked the launch of Venu Sports — a joint venture by Warner Bros. Discovery, The Walt Disney Company, and Fox Corporation —following a legal challenge by Fubo. I'm not sure that Venu is anything other than a new type cable package though? The question surely should be...does this new type of bundle really give consumers the choice they desire? For some people, the Venu bundle will be perfect, for others it will leave them paying for content they simply don’t watch. So a combination of Venu type packages and mix and match a la carte offerings is surely what is required – i.e. complete choice. In the meantime however we wait to see how the courts ruling impacts consumer choice. As Rick Broida points out in the headline... WE KNOW that picture quality is something that we need to deliver. But that is not enough for an experience that delivers delight. After working for years to listen, think through, and address the pain-points that our streamers need to face; it is incredibly rewarding to hear "Great picture, sure, but it's the myriad little attentions to detail that made me fall in love with the Pro.". At Roku, we are committed to sweating the details so you don't need to. The Mini-LED QLED design was meant to punch above its weight in picture quality but that was not enough for the team... These "little" details are what separate competency (pretty common in the tech business) with delightful (what we endeavor to deliver every day with every Roku product). We heard our fans express a need for backlit remotes and USB-C charging and we delivered on that with the new Roku Voice Remote Pro v2. Customers don't ask for cable management with convenient hook&loop straps to make it easy, but we know that they need it and will find it a joy because we have watched them struggle to install a TV without the spaghetti of wires hanging out. Our Streamers don't ask for legs that can be easily and firmly attached to the TV without tools, but we know that they will enjoy it because we watch them set up TVs in our labs and we talk to them after their purchases. Smart Picture will change the overall experience for the 94% of people that never touch their picture settings (and while we're at it... Smart Sound does the same thing for audio.) Nobody expects this "smart friend" to help them, but we do it anyway. This list could go on and on, but... The point is that the Roku Pro Series is the ultimate TV built for you by people that simply LIVE AND LOVE TV! Overall, I could not be more proud of the Roku team that has delivered on our dreams. This is the best overall TV that I have every been a part of. Speaking from well over 30 years in the TV business should lend some pretty healthy weight to that opinion!

What do the swing states want? ❤️ Romance ❤️ In a recent study commissioned by Roku, the findings about our seven-swing-states were both informative and surprising. (1) In these states, 67% are "cord cutters" or "cord nevers" meaning they do not utilize traditional cable or broadcast to connect with content (compared with a 50% split between "cutters" and "traditional" across the USA); (2) They consume more news than the average; (3) When they seek specific content to engage with, their number one choice? Romance (romantic comedy and romantic stories)! Bottom Line: Even in troubled times, positivity is what people are looking for - in an increasingly digital only world.
