The release of the FY25 US defense budget has highlighted significant opportunities available to contractors via the operations and maintenance spend, a budget category expected to grow 9% through FY29. Unfortunately, not every manufacturer has the resources, capital, or talent to adopt a smart factory. This has created challenges for many, resulting in only seven percent of them digitizing their factory operations, and five percent already having smart factories. As part of the United States Department of Defense #factoryofthefuture (FoF) ecosystem, #additivemanufacturing must plays an important and essential role in the technology stack needed to enable various class of weapon systems. How do you think the AAM sector has influenced the Work and Opportunities for Safety Engineers?   As the aerospace industry evolves, we've seen a significant shift with the rise of the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) sector.   From my observations, AAM has:   ✔ Diversified Career Paths Safety engineers are finding new opportunities in the development and certification of innovative air mobility solutions.   ✔ Enhanced Focus on Safety Standards With AAM introducing novel technologies and operational environments, there's a heightened emphasis on creating robust safety standards and protocols. The introduction of SC-VTOL and recent updates within SC-VTOL-02 gives direction for safety engineers in the sector.   ✔ Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration In my opinion, the integration of AAM has provided collaboration between various sectors, bringing fresh perspectives and solutions to safety engineering challenges.   I would be interested to hear your experiences and insights on safety engineering in AAM. 🚀 Balancing Tradition and Innovation in Aerospace Quality 🚀 Recently, my 5-year-old son asked me, "Papa, what do you do at Boeing?" This simple question led to a profound conversation about my role as a Regional Manager managing supplier quality, and it got me thinking about how to explain it in a way that's simple yet meaningful. I told him, "Imagine we Quality Folks are like a superhero for quality at Boeing. Just like superheroes ensure everything is safe and perfect, we make sure all the parts we use to make airplanes are also safe and perfect. It's like assembling a perfect puzzle so airplanes can fly safely in the sky." His curious mind didn't stop there. He asked how come airplanes looker nicer now than the older airplanes and if new airplanes are healthier then old airplanes?.. I paused for a moment and asked him, why are you asking this question.. he then citing his grandpa's view on old farming practices being healthier that current day farming. His question resonated deeply, sparking reflections on the balance between tradition and innovation in aerospace quality. While we celebrate technological advancements in the aerospace industry, my son's question made me pause and reflect: Are these advancements truly enhancing quality? Are defect rates improving? may be- yes! but... long way to go I guess! His perspective reminded me of the importance of going back to basics in Aerospace Quality Management. Just as old farming methods can offer valuable insights, revisiting timeless quality practices may enhance safety and reliability in aerospace. As we embrace innovation, let's not forget the wisdom of the past.
