To realize this, an even greater data rate and lower latency communication will be required. For instance, the data rates needed for replicating real objects in virtual spaces for live sports, live music, or the metaverse demand 14-230 Gbps per object for uplink, while on the viewing side, 48-200 Gbps for downlink is necessary. These requirements exceed the capabilities of 5G. This report demonstrates how mWAD can contribute to realizing such a future and clearly identifies its challenges. Key insight from Richard Bennett's report on Wi-Fi performance relative to spectrum shows that further additions to Wi-Fi's already disproportionate share of mid-band spectrum will provide little benefit to Wi-Fi users and will undermine the performance of wide-area networks. The #lack of #progress in #standalone #5G #deployments highlighted in the GSA May 2024 Market Snapshot Report is a point worth noting. Stalled #Standalone 5G -The report indicates that the number of operators with deployed standalone 5G networks hasn't increased since the end of 2023 (at 49). This suggests a #slowdown in the #rollout of the next-generation 5G technology. Expectations vs. Reality- Standalone 5G promises significant #improvements in network #performance, #efficiency, and #flexibility. The lack of progress could be due to various factors like technical challenges, regulatory hurdles, investment considerations, infrastructure limitations, or delays in developing applications that fully utilize standalone 5G capabilities. Additionally, the transition to standalone 5G networks requires substantial infrastructure upgrades and investments, which can be both costly and time-consuming for operators. Some operators might be in the process of deploying standalone 5G networks that haven't been publicly announced yet. On the #security front, issue #8 of 3GPP newsletter contains an article on the Security Assurance (#SCAS) specifications developed by SA WG3. Thanks to my colleagues in SA3, we have been prolific in creating Security Assurance specifications for all major EPC nodes, eNB (4G) and almost all 5G core network nodes. Theses specifications define the basic fundamental test cases which are are used in the GSMA NESAS certification program which are mandatory for the EU and many other regional #cyber-certification and compliance programs.

Well summarized by Mike Dano, the show was about "Hope", a hope that 5G will live up to its potential. There is potential with 5G with better performance, better spectral efficiency, N/W slicing in SA, etc. Still, the bottom line is whether there is enough topline growth for MNO and MSO to make business sense and drive growth across the board in telecom. Currently, the answer is no; there are edge cases that will benefit, but not on a mass scale, which is what we need. The other topic is Rural Broadband and NTIA funds, from technology and business perspective and all practical purposes, I agree with Bill Baker that the right answer to digital divide is not only fiber or not only wireless, it has to be hybrid approach.

RCS will be included in iOS 18. We have an official confirmation from Apple. It is a whisper but it is all needed to open an important chapter for messaging. On the iMessage summary slide at WWDC, RCS Support was included as a bullet point. Yes, there was no commentary no words spoken. The focus was still on innovations for the iMessage experience. Apple is opening up to RCS, but it is not embracing it with the same love it has for its products. The important thing was reported separately, Apple has now confirmed that it will support the latest GSMA standard (e.g. Universal Profile). This confirms that business messaging features will be supported by Apple too. North American and European carriers have been working towards a launch, and we should expect some more information towards Q4 2024. Interestingly the differences between Google RCS (where messages are encrypted) and Apple RCS (where messages are not encrypted as by GSMA standard) leave questions unanswered still. It will take some time to get the full pictures and details - if you are a member of the Mobile Ecosystem Forum you should expect plenty of actions and a new specific working group to discover and clarify all issues. A quiet revolution, but one nevertheless!

This generation leverages 7-nm CMOS technology and cutting-edge optoelectronics to deliver 400 Gb/s in pluggable form factors such as QSFP-DD and CFP2, thus redefining business and network economics by reducing power consumption, simplifying the network, and enhancing service flexibility, all of which contribute to a significant reduction in total cost of ownership. However, deploying coherent pluggables comes with its own set of challenges that need to be addressed to unlock their full potential.
