The USA Spirits Ratings (USA Ratings) call for entries for all international and domestic brands is now open. International Submission Deadline Is May 31, 2024. The USA Spirits Ratings is in its 7th year and is inviting domestic and international brands to enter the 2024 competition now. The ratings is one of the leading spirits competitions in the USA organized by Beverage Trade Network which has grown very well showing interest in the competition. One of the very unique things about USA Ratings is its judges. All the judges are trade buyers and have direct buying responsibility. International Submission Deadline Is May 31, 2024. As a result, the USA Spirits Ratings developed its scoring system based on Quality, Value, and Packaging that considers these factors. The judging panel will consist of prominent industry individuals with a strong commercial buying focus. Whether they are purchasing for hotels and restaurants or a retail chain of liquor stores, these buyers know the types of brands and products that will resonate with consumers. U.S. Wholesale Wine Distribution Today and What Does the Future Promises. Our editor covers the current state of distribution in the US market on USA Wine Ratings USA Ratings. So what is the state of wholesale wine distribution in the U.S. today? The wholesale wine market lies amidst a huge transformation. Consolidation among distributors, the rise of private-label brands, and shifting consumer preferences have reshaped how wine producers, both domestic and international, bring products to the American market. While large producers may have the resources to navigate these changes, small and medium-sized wineries face mounting challenges as they struggle to compete for distribution and shelf space. This situation also affects independent wine retailers. The Shrinking Wholesale Tier and the Concentrated Power of Large Distributors At the heart of any issue facing winemakers is the vastly decreasing number of U.S. distributors. Today, three major players—Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits, Republic National Distributing Company, and Breakthru Beverage Group—dominate the landscape, limiting opportunities for smaller wineries. The annual Impact Databank Report from Shanken (which includes spirits sales) showed that Southern Glazer’s and RNDC together will control a projected 53% of the market in 2024. If we expand that to the top 10 companies, they will control a projected 81.5%. Barry Herbst, Wine Director at independent retailer Bottle Barn in Sonoma, summarizes that distribution is “greatly consolidated now. Fewer companies carrying more products in their books.” But there are many “products and services the big guys don't want to bother with.” Southern Glazer’s, for example, represents more than 1,700 beverage suppliers, including more than 7,000 individual brands. There are, however, about 12,000 wineries in the US, many with multiple brands. Wine in Warehouses Rob McMillan of Silicon Valley Bank’s wine division explains the current situation: “Wine distribution continues to be stacked up in the warehouses.” This is affecting everyone involved, but not equally. “Larger premium wineries with good brands are getting their wine through to retailers and consumers while other wine inventory continues to linger.” McMillan is not convinced that this situation will be resolved quickly. “There are occasional speeches that are made by the senior people in larger wholesalers and those in a few larger wineries as well, that they think the backlog will start to abate next year, or that we are on the precipice now. But thus far, the data aren’t supporting that.” He points to the graph pictured above. “At the peak, the backup in inventories was 1.67x sales in May 2023. Inventories have dropped through July 1st to 1.59x sales. That’s about a 5% drop in a little over a year. It’s progress, but that’s still a long way from historical averages.” Read the full story here.

Preparing Your Wine Brand for the U.S. Market: A Guide to Navigating the Three-Tier System and Securing an Importer. Getting your brand ready for business in the USA requires a thorough understanding of what US importers are looking for and how to service their needs. In the US, foreign brands cannot legally sell their wines or spirits directly to distributors or retailers. They must first appoint an importer who will have exclusive rights to the brand in their territory. The importer will then work with their distribution partners who will in turn supply their retail partners with the imported brand. This system, called the Three Tier System, creates a very complex and competitive marketplace. In order to ensure they are working with brands that they think will successfully penetrate the US system, importers look to source new products that come with solid marketing budgets, premium packaging, good price points, and exceptional taste. Depending on the importer profile, the preferences given to these characteristics can vary drastically. It is important to target importers who work with similar brands to yours and understand what it means to be a part of a successful stateside brand launch. As the importer contract gives the importer exclusive rights to your brand, you want to protect yourself against potentially signing on to an ill-suited import partner.

(TX) Wine Market Monday! What are the effects of the ballooning "wine lake" in the West Coast of the US having on the #TexasWine market? 🍇🍷🧐 The GLUT of West Coast wholesale (bulk) wine being sold at fire sale prices (likely sub-breakeven) is causing ripples across the globe. Here in Texas, we are seeing pressure form this "wine lake" in the lower-priced categories, making it hard to justify using wine that isn't "American" appellation from outside the state. What is likely strong brand loyalty to "Texas" 🤠 seems to be holding the overall prices for fruit and bulk wine in the $12+/bottle categories very firm, with the only noticeable pressure being on the bottles near the very bottom ($10-$15). With overall flat wine consumption and consumables/packaging prices staying high, that makes for a tough environment for wineries to stay profitable. If you can't move more volumes to compensate and are brand-loyal to your geography, you've got to look towards fruit costs and production costs to increase margins and stay profitable.
