This is a custom homing routine, using Applied Motion Products "Q programming". I haven't used this programming language in 17 years, and it's just as awesome as I remember. Highly recommended. First, I jog backwards to the hard stop, then make a distance move forward to get the plates close together, then jog forward until the plates are touching (determined by 24v flowing through the plates), then set the encoder position to zero and back away using another distance move. In the 1999 sci-fi cult classic, The Matrix, characters literally plug their heads into a universal supercomputer and download information that shapes their brains. For example, Neo, the hero of the story, undergoes a ten-hour “training” while lying back, eyes closed, a thick cable protruding from the base of his head. At the end, he opens his eyes and says, “I know kung fu.” If you’ve watched the movie, you know how thorough his knowledge is. While that vision of pushing novel information directly into your brain is clearly fantasy, American computer scientist and futurist Ray Kurzweil thinks we’ll only have to wait until 2045 for some version of a brain-boosting artificial interface. It may not give you overnight martial arts skills, but it could hook your brain up to the ultimate internet—unlocking the ability to summon answers to your questions in an instant, or even immersing yourself in a virtual reality beyond our wildest dreams. Let’s be clear: this tech is not built for entertainment. Kurzweil says there’s a major advantage to building up our brains with nanotechnology: “One cubic inch of nanotube circuitry, once fully developed, would be up to one hundred million times more powerful than the human brain.” Eventually, we could all become so interconnected that humanity could form a sort of superbrain, some researchers believe. In order to measure image chromatic distortion between 1/8 and ½ a pixel, we needed to measure image features one order of magnitude smaller: We achieved 0,01 to 0,03 pixel ... In order to prove the amount of bias in an image, we used image compression as a metric: 4 bias sources added together amount to 1/3 of lost image compression. One third of the compressed image file is bias. In order to show how bad telemetry was, we showed how image scale accuracy could be made more accurate, 10e-5 to 10e-10 m scale accuracy improvement, 5 digits more, by removing one single bias source, there are 3 more at least. In doing so, the image center moves 3 pixels, and the aim shifts... We can prove our approach retains true object geometry, its imposed in the math formulation we use. Our approach leads to the only missing knowledge in #digitalimaging: How to model a zooming lens. ISO (International Standard Organization) identified this very specific gap in technology as THE missing factor slowing adoption of what is already the second most deployed digital technology after the microchip. Andrea Bertoncini Ph.D.: Can your 3D printer replicate this level of detail? Here’s the next level of #3Dprinting benchmark: the "textured Benchy." I modified the #3DBenchy boat by adding textures on each part using #blender. I then printed it using a Nanoscribe QuantumX with our 3D2GL technology, which allows us to achieve both smooth surfaces and fine textures in a single print using a single recipe with a fixed 1µm slicing. This SEM image showcases the potential of 3D2GL technology to create highly detailed and precise models, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in nanoscale 3D printing. After Elon Musk provided his "long-term" vision for autonomous, humanoid robots at last week's "We, Robot" event, we expressed some skepticism about the autonomy of the Optimus prototypes sent out for a post-event mingle with the assembled, partying humans. Now, there's been a raft of confirmation that human teleoperators were indeed puppeting the robot prototypes for much of the night. Bloomberg cites unnamed "people familiar with the matter" in reporting that Tesla "used humans to remotely control some capabilities" of the prototype robots at the event. The report doesn't specify which demonstrated capabilities needed that human assistance, but it points out that the robots "were able to walk without external control using artificial intelligence" (the lack of a similar AI call-out for any other robot actions that night seems telling). That lines up with reporting from tech blogger Robert Scoble, who posted on social media that he had "talked with an engineer" who confirmed that "when it walked, that is AI running Optimus." For other tasks—like pouring drinks from a tap, playing Rock Paper Scissors, or chatting with nearby attendees—Scoble noted that "a human is remote assisting." Perhaps the strongest indication that human assistance was in play at the event was the Optimus units' ability to carry on quick, extemporaneous conversations with human attendees. While AI models have shown rapid advances in naturalistic vocal communications recently, the smoothness and intonation of the Optimus conversations—and their ability to make out questions among a noisy crowd of humans—strongly suggested a human helping behind the scenes. A flywheel is a massive metal disk, or wheel, that often weighs over 4400 pounds. It takes a lot of effort to get it started, but once it starts to turn there are counterweights around the outside of the wheel that start to take effect, and it starts to build momentum almost by itself. This flywheel effect is also a business metaphor about how people can put a great deal of effort into their business without much noticeable effect until one day the flywheel starts to turn. This is called the breakthrough moment and once the flywheel is in motion, it will start to turn faster and faster with increasing returns for the business. Great companies—like Amazon—are spinning flywheels, where success becomes self-enforcing. Mediocre companies constantly launch new initiatives, looking for a magic solution to get the wheel turning. I believe that what finally turns the flywheel that makes a great company is customer experience. When customers have a great experience, they become promoters of a business, which leads to increased sales and customer loyalty. Also, interaction with a customer generates data that can be used to improve the overall experience. This ‘Doomsday Glacier’ is melting faster than scientists thought. Now Earth’s biggest cities are at risk (BBC Science Focus Magazine) Nearly half the world’s population live within 200 km of a coastline, and a sea level rise of 3 or more meters (10 ft) would inundate many of the world’s major cities, including London, New York and Shanghai. One of West Antarctica’s most infamous glaciers, nicknamed the ‘Doomsday Glacier’ due to its potential to trigger coastline-altering amounts of sea level rise, is changing rapidly in response to climate change. But what does the future hold, and what will it mean? The size of Britain, measuring 120 km across, The Doomsday Glacier, or Thwaites Glacier to call it by its proper name, is the widest glacier in the world. Like many West Antarctic glaciers, it has been speeding up and losing ice extremely rapidly in recent years – the rate of loss has actually been doubling in the last 30 years. Much of this is because its underbelly is being melted away by warming ocean waters This rapid melting is an issue as the glacier contains enough ice to raise global sea levels by 65 cm if it entirely collapses. At current rates, it will contribute around 10 cm of sea level rise by the end of the century. That’s a lot of sea level rise from one glacier. But there’s another reason that scientists are worried about Thwaites. The glacier acts like a keystone, meaning that a collapse could drag in neighbouring glaciers with it, potentially adding more than 𝟯 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀 to global sea levels. The loss of these important glaciers would be irreversible on human timescales, which makes it a ‘tipping point’.

For the first time, physicists have used laser light to bump the nucleus of a thorium atom up to a higher energy level. The discovery paves the way for the development of a new clock whose ticks are not only more precise but can probe the most fundamental forces in the universe. Currently, our most accurate clocks are atomic and keep time by firing lasers at electrons — matching the laser's frequency with the precise jumps across energy levels it causes electrons orbiting atoms to make. This method gives scientists an ultraprecise measurement of the laser's frequency, from which they can extract the "tick" of the atomic clock. However, atomic clocks are far from perfect. The electrons they rely on to keep time sit outside atoms. They are therefore vulnerable to interference from stray magnetic fields or other environmental effects that can subtly alter their energy levels, the frequency of laser light they subsequently respond to, and therefore the time they keep. A nuclear clock, on the other hand, would use the energy transitions of nuclei inside the heart of an atom, so they are shielded from outside interference. But many of the gaps between nuclei energy levels are thousands of times greater than those for electrons — meaning they are too large to be crossed with the energy of a laser. But in the 1970s, scientists found that one isotope, or version, of the element thorium (thorium-229) seemed to have an energy level that could be spanned by laser light. But finding this precise energy gap has been no simple task. Initially, researchers excited thorium-229 to an energy level far above the two that physicists were actually interested in. They then measured the subtle differences in the energy of light emitted when it fell back down to the higher one compared to the one just below it. To finally hone in on the precise value, researchers trapped 10 to the power of 17 thorium-229 nuclei (or a million times more nuclei than there are stars in our galaxy) inside crystals of calcium fluoride, which greatly increased the likelihood of finding the desired transition. After many attempts, the researchers directly observed a thorium atom leaping between the energy levels: an energy change of 8.35574 electron volts. researchers note that it will take many more years to develop nuclear clocks to the same accuracy of their atomic counterparts. Anyone move away from A/B Micrologix into something else that is tolerable to work with? I prefer to not use Connected Components Workbench. I'd like to move away from this sub par stuff into something usable. Currently using Panelview Plus 7 as well, would like to move from those as they are overpriced for what you get. Need the ability for remote connection to PLC and HMI, ability to collect data, and it would be nice it it worked when I powered it on and tried to download information to it. Any suggestions?

In Einstein’s General Relativity, gravitational interactions are mediated by a massless particle, the graviton. However, there is a general class of modified gravity theories that endow the graviton with a mass. What are the implications of massive gravitons? First, the existence of a graviton mass causes a time delay in the propagation of gravitational waves as collections of gravitons, relative to the speed of light. Second, in many of these modified gravity theories, a massive graviton enables gravitational interactions only out to a limited distance, dictated by its quantum-mechanical Compton wavelength. This wavelength is given by h/mc, where h is Planck’s constant, m is the graviton mass and c is the speed of light. For a graviton mass that is 40 orders of magnitude lighter than the proton, this scale is 1.2 billion light years, about a tenth of the distance to the edge of the observable universe. With a massive graviton, the gravitational influence of any object is suppressed exponentially below the Newtonian potential at distances larger than graviton Compton wavelength. This exponential suppression is commonly named after the Japanese physicist Hideki Yukawa who won the Nobel Prize in 1949 for describing the strong interaction as an exchange of massive particles named mesons, which exhibit the same exponential suppression on the meson Compton wavelength. In past decades, many limits were set of the graviton mass based on a variety of astrophysical data sets all the way from the Solar system out to the Universe at large. Most recently, analysis of gravitational-wave data from the three observing runs of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration used the propagation speed constraint to derive a limit on the graviton mass that is 32 orders of magnitude below the proton mass. Now, thanks to an idea I had before my morning jog, I submitted for publication a new paper in which I improved this limit by a factor of 250 million. My idea is simple. Our motion relative to the cosmic frame of reference introduces a Doppler effect through which the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) appears brighter in the direction we move. The increased CMB flux ahead of us is analogous to the experience of getting more wet at the front compared to the back when running through rain. Most recently, the Planck satellite measured this effect to an exquisite precision, implying a local peculiar velocity of about a thousandth of the speed of light relative to the cosmic frame of reference. 【Engineering Challenges: Why was it so Hard to Land a U2 Spy Plane?】 The U-2, nicknamed "Dragon Lady" for its sleek profile, is a legendary American spy plane known for soaring to incredible heights. Designed for Cold War reconnaissance, it cruises at over 70,000 feet, almost in the realm of near space. This extreme altitude allows it to capture unseen territory with advanced cameras and sensors, making it a vital tool for gathering intelligence for decades. Landing a U-2 spy plane is notoriously difficult for a few reasons: 1) Unique Design: The U-2 is built for soaring at extreme altitudes, reaching up to 70,000 feet. Its massive wings, perfect for generating lift at high altitudes, become a challenge at lower altitudes. They create too much lift for the plane's weight, making it want to stay airborne even when the pilot wants to land. 2) Narrow Speed Window: At high altitude, the thin air means there's a very narrow range between stalling (losing lift) and exceeding safe airspeed. Pilots have to maintain a precise speed, often within just 5-10 knots, to keep the U-2 flying safely. This requires constant attention and leaves little room for error during landing maneuvers. 3) Landing Gear: Unlike most jets, the U-2 has a bicycle landing gear with a single small wheel in the front and dual wheels in the back. This design provides stability when taking off and landing on rough runways in remote locations, but it makes landings more challenging on paved runways. 3) Pilot Fatigue: U-2 missions often last for many hours at high altitudes. Pilots wear pressurized suits which can be tiring, and the constant focus on maintaining precise airspeed adds to the fatigue. This can make those critical landing moments even more demanding. 4) Ground Effect: As the U-2 descends towards the runway, it enters a zone of denser air called "ground effect." This can cause the plane to bounce unexpectedly due to the changing air pressure under the wings. To compensate for these challenges, U-2 landings often involve a chase car following the plane down the runway. A pilot in the car uses a radio to call out the plane's altitude in the last few feet, helping the pilot judge the landing perfectly.
