Today, as we celebrate Juneteenth, I'm reminded of its significant stature in our history—𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆. It marks the day when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved African Americans in Texas, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This delay tragically prolonged the denial of freedom and justice, underscoring the importance of transparent and timely information.   To me, Juneteenth serves as a painful and profound reminder of the essential pillars of education, empowerment and ethical engagement – to learn from the past and pave a way for a more equitable, just, connected and prosperous future. Luminaries like Opal Lee (an activist, educator and the “grandmother of Juneteenth"), whose relentless resolve led to Juneteenth being recognized as a national holiday, illustrate how we can preserve that history while progressing and persevering through ongoing challenges of equity, empathy, awareness and access.   I remain committed to using my platform to express the perspectives, experiences and ambitions of diverse and underserved communities. Today is #BlackWomensEqualPayDay where the wage gap can cost a black woman nearly $900,000 over her 40-year career. Where the gender & racial wage gap robs black women of retirement security, and threatens black women's ability to save for a home, start a business, and pay off their student loans. A new report from The Executive Leadership Council (ELC) surveyed 180 C-Suite and senior-level Black executives to get their perspective on the impact that DEI has—and should have—in business. 73% of executives who responded rated their companies as "high performing" on DEI strategy and implementation and credited their CEO's advocacy and leadership for driving progress.  From the report: "ELC respondents advise companies to treat DEI like every other known business driver; hold as a guiding principle that evident, accountable fairness and opportunity for all should underpin DEI initiatives; and even as attacks on DEI increase, remain steadfast in commitments to and actions that advance performance-based DEI." Finding My Path, My Way As we celebrate Black History Month, I’ve been reflecting on the theme of Reclaiming Narratives. For me, it’s not just about honoring the stories of the past, it’s about owning and shaping our own journeys. Every path has its twists and turns, and mine has been no different. When I first moved to the UK, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was drawn to anthropology because I’m fascinated by people and culture, but life had other plans. I got pushed into a “practical” route that didn’t feel right, and for a while, I was totally lost. Then, after conversation after conversation with my people the topic around HR came up. With zero experience but a “why not” attitude, I jumped into a master’s program. No grand plan, just hoping to figure it out along the way. That’s when everything started to fall in place. I was seconded into an HR systems and data role, and suddenly, it all made sense. I wasn’t just crunching numbers, I was uncovering stories. Real insights about people, their experiences, and how the workplace could change for the better. That’s when I knew: this is where I want to be. Now, I’m using data to make real impact, helping organisations understand their people, and making sure diversity isn’t just a buzzword. And I’m doing it on my terms, with my own story leading the way. This Black History Month, it’s all about reclaiming our narratives. We don’t always have the perfect roadmap, but the journey teaches you who you are, and where you’re meant to be. 🙌🏾Don’t be afraid of detours – Your path might not always be clear, but every step teaches you something valuable. 🙌🏾Find your passion – When you’re unsure, keep exploring. The right fit might surprise you, just like data surprised me! 🙌🏾Use your skills for impact – Whatever your niche is, find ways to make a difference. In my case, it’s using data to help build better, more inclusive workplaces. 🙌🏾Ask for help – Conversations with mentors, family, or peers can open doors you never considered. As a Black woman, I was surprised to learn about the prevalence of anemia in our community. At my 14-year-old daughter's annual physical, her pediatrician tested her iron levels and shared this information with me. Anemia affects me and my mom too. Anemia can have a significant impact on Black women's health. Compared to other demographic groups, we are at a higher risk of developing this condition. Its consequences can be far-reaching, affecting various aspects of our health and well-being. One of the primary ways anemia impacts Black women's health is through its effects on energy levels and overall vitality. Symptoms like fatigue, weakness, and dizziness can make it difficult for us to carry out our daily activities and responsibilities, negatively impacting our quality of life and overall productivity. Anemia can also have implications for maternal health, as pregnant Black women are particularly susceptible to developing iron deficiency anemia. This can increase the risk of complications during pregnancy, such as preterm birth, low birth weight, and maternal mortality. Adequate prenatal care and monitoring are crucial to prevent and manage anemia during pregnancy. In addition to the physical effects, anemia can also impact mental health and emotional well-being. Chronic fatigue and weakness can lead to feelings of frustration, stress, and depression, affecting a woman's mental health and overall quality of life. It's essential for Black women to be aware of the increased risk of anemia and take proactive steps to prevent and manage the condition. This includes maintaining a healthy diet rich in iron, seeking regular medical check-ups, and discussing any concerns or symptoms with a healthcare provider. By addressing anemia early on and receiving appropriate treatment, Black women can improve their health outcomes and overall well-being. #BlackHealthMatters #AnemiaAwareness

As Election Day looms, I’m feeling a kind of anxiety that’s hard to put into words—a deep-rooted fear about the future and what lies on the other side of those results. As a Black woman, as a mother, as someone who knows all too well the stakes for myself, my family, and my community, I feel the weight of what could come if we lose even more ground in the fight for our right to exist freely and safely. The Supreme Court has chipped away at freedoms we assumed were permanent. Their recent decisions have threatened the autonomy of women over our own bodies, undermined protections for BIPOC people, and put LGBTQ+ rights on an increasingly precarious ledge. It’s as if a new form of control and restriction is descending on anyone outside the narrowest slice of privilege, making the very fabric of our communities feel vulnerable and under siege. And I’m afraid. I’m afraid that even if we vote to resist this tide, the results won’t be respected—that violence may erupt in the wake of yet another disputed election. We’ve already seen what happens when leaders stoke anger and feed division for their own gain. I’m afraid we might reelect someone who cares only about his own vendettas, his self-preservation, and his desire for unchecked power, regardless of the damage it does to the rest of us. What would that mean for communities like mine? What would it mean for every marginalized person in this country? I fear for the people I love, for my friends, for the diverse voices that make up this country but often go unheard. If unrest comes, it’s all too likely that violence will hit our communities hardest. Voting feels like our strongest defense right now, even in a system that has failed so many before. We can’t afford to stay silent or stay home. I need all of us to take our fear and use it, to let it push us to the polls, to use our voices in every way we can. This isn’t just an election; it’s a stand against an assault on our rights, our dignity, and our existence. Please, let’s protect what’s left—and let’s keep fighting for the future we all deserve. #VOTE

Does this add up??? If the US population is ONLY 58% White and if you are blocking the less than 1% that goes to Black people, specifically Black women, then the thought process behind these decisions are very simple: *** White people are inherently better. If you're Black and receive position or money, it's a scam because you're inferior *** Because why is no one questioning why SO much money is going to White VCs? Why is no one questioning why White folks are overrepresented in senior and executive leadership? Why is merit simply accepted and assumed when the beneficiary is White? Let's call a spade a spade ♠️ The WHY is anti-blackness, racism, White supremacy and misogynoir yet again... and it's bullshit. And before anybody gets their high blood pressure up because they don't know what White supremacy is... Moving on from the situation I described in my TedX Talk was difficult. It was toxic and emotionally damaging. As a Black woman - that has been the case more times than not in employment situations. I experience anxiety when going into new employment situations. Someone shared the below tips with me to help me acclimate: 📍Acknowledge Your Feelings: It’s okay to feel this way. Recognizing it is the first step. 📍Build Trust Slowly: Give yourself time to adjust and build trust with your new team and manager. 📍Set Small Goals: Focus on small, daily achievements to build your confidence. 📍Communicate: Talk to your new manager about your experiences. Transparency can help them understand your situation better. 📍Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to talk to a therapist or career coach for professional advice. 📍You are in a new space with new opportunities. Shine bright! 🌞
