Major shake-up in the fitness world! Beachbody is ditching its MLM model and moving to an affiliate program. But here's the question: Will this shift lead to sustainable, long-term health results? Beachbody is making major changes to its business model, shifting from multi-level marketing (MLM) to a single-level affiliate program, and restructuring their company to focus on profitability. They're also expanding direct-to-consumer and Amazon sales channels to streamline operations and reduce overhead. While Beachbody has helped many achieve their fitness goals, I’ve always been more of a fan of whole-foods nutrition and blood sugar balancing. In my opinion, relying on shakes with cane sugar, gums, and “natural” flavours isn't the most sustainable or beneficial path to long-term health. Curious about the full story? There's no better example of how #policy impacts #womenshealth than this one. For the 40% of women with dense breasts, #mammograms are not enough to diagnose breast cancer. Yet many with dense breasts don't follow up with another diagnostic, or can't afford it, because insurance doesn't pay for it as they would another screening test. This leads to later diagnosis and worse outcomes. And there's no better example of ways to advocate for these important issues than getting in front of #Congress and/or informing your own local representative about the need to address this. Kudos to the breast cancer early detection coalition for their #advocacy. Give Stress A Dress Rehearsal Part 1   196,080,000   The American Psychological Association, reporting about the early start of our 2020 decade, revealed in a survey that three-quarters of adults interviewed said they have experienced health impacts due to stress.  Using data from the U.S. census and stress statistics from the American Psychological Association, one arrives to that concerning numeric total stretching into the millions mentioned in the beginning of this post.   What is stress? Stress, as defined by the American Psychological Association; “the physiological or psychological response to internal or external stressors. Stress involves changes affecting nearly every system of the body, influencing how people feel and behave.” Once the word behave appears on the radar and lens of Behavioral Nutrition, a great part of behavior is our relationship with food. Stress is a normal response to everyday pressure and challenges and is part of life and can escalate into an unhealthy element of our day to day schedules, routine, and functions when it upsets our equilibrium, our relationships with people, or relationship with self and our relationship with food.  Sometimes it’s not about what you are eating, but what is eating you?   Is it natural to turn to food for comfort? Once in a while we all become food therapists if only when having a bowl of hot, comforting, chicken soup on a dreary, gray, low-cloud rainy day. The food is actually making me feel better…is it really a problem?   Ultimately, food therapy does not work.  You may feel better for a few moments but, once the food is gone and the taste has left your mouth, the original problem remains. If food is your “Quantum of Solace”, you are confusing immediate pleasure with long term happiness. The alcohol addict who takes that first drink and the dangerously overweight person that eats an entire bag of cookies both believe they are indulging in pleasures, but they are destructive pleasures that will eventually cost more than the pleasure was worth.    When you eat because of someone or some feeling, you are giving that person or feeling power over you. Calories cannot make you happy.  Food cannot resolve stressful situations, food will not help you cope, food will not teach you new skills to deal with stress, food will not repair relationships. As long as eating is tied to emotions, you will never achieve a stable weight. Your weight will change as often as your emotions do.  Use of any diet, weight loss program, medicine, or even injections - no matter how sound - will be as futile as trying to build a castle in the sand; it will be swept away with the next wave of emotion.
