I used to make pros and cons lists. They left me looking for reasons to say no. Then I asked a different question: "What needs to be true for me to say yes?" This simple change transformed my decisions. For hiring. For partnerships. For new ventures. Now I seek win-wins. I look for added value. I focus on potential, not pitfalls. It's not about avoiding negatives. It's about embracing positives. This approach guides me: When building offers. Creating value propositions. Evaluating opportunities. The result? Better choices. Stronger partnerships. More exciting ventures. What if we all approached decisions this way? Seeking reasons to say yes, not no. Looking for the best in every opportunity. I also use a different question that helps me make a quick no, but that’s for another post :) What’s some of your favorite mental models for making decisions?

I got a bit side-tracked when I went into investment banking at the start of my career, and have been slowly finding my way back to myself ever since. I’ve spent the last 10 years working on climate change, applying my finance skills to fix broken economic systems. I believe that the main reason we are not doing more, faster as a society is not that we don’t have good enough technologies or enough capital, but that our internal systems are broken too. So many of us are still operating from deep-seated beliefs that there isn’t enough time/money/love/resources for all of us and that our worth is defined by our achievements and possessions, which leads us to make decisions from fear and anxiety rather than love and compassion. This fundamentally limits the potential for creativity, collaboration and human connection, and leads to a lonely, miserable existence. I had a lot of work to do on this myself - over the last 10 years I’ve been on a deep inner journey aided by meditation, yoga, psychotherapy, coaching and psychedelics. I came to realise that the way I want to contribute to the world is to dedicate the next phase of my career to helping people become the leaders that we badly need. 𝐇𝐨𝐰: I work primarily with founders and executives of venture-backed mission-oriented businesses. While the professional domain is the primary focus, I work with the whole self, examining how you relate to yourself and the world around you, your key personal relationships, and your lifestyle to help you get to know yourself, shift unhelpful patterns and beliefs, uncover what you really want and unlock your full potential. Balancing work and life / rest This time of the year also presents an opportunity to stop or reduce overworking (and overthinking that can spiral into unhealthy judgement of yourself). I have the tendency to (while I am resting) sit on my phone and work, often late into the night. I have now made a conscious decision to stop “working” on my phone by 6pm. This allows my brain to disconnect and for my body to settle into rest mode. This has been difficult and I still struggle with it but I can feel the difference if I disconnect. In essence, I set a boundary for myself recognising that I am the one standing in my own way. What you can do: Identify one action you can take to prioritise rest or reduce overworking. Set a boundary with yourself or others. Clearly communicate it to those affected, and clarify your expectations. Get support from a friend to hold you accountable to this commitment. Enjoy the rest or time out and do something fun, connect with family and friends or read that book that has been laying on your nightstand for months. Instead of putting pressure on yourself to “perform, use the rest of 2024 to come back to being a human being not just a human doing. See it as an opportunity to build a foundation of revolutionary rest and wellbeing that you need to do everything else.

Startup CEOs/COOs - how do you know if a Fractional Exec is for your biz right now? Do you have more than 25 people - employees and contractors? Do you plan to have a great culture as opposed to a mediocre or toxic one? Do you find yourself doing things that you don't have expertise in and feeling your way along in the dark? Do you have plans to grow and mature as a company over the next few years? Do you want to see revenue and profits rise? If you answered yes to any of the above questions - or all of them - then yes, you should be looking at Fractional Execs. And imagine the nimbleness and agility you'd have with all Fractional Execs as flexible expert resources - especially over other orgs or competitors that have full-time resources in all of their exec roles. (Think about it - they're paying more $, more $ in overhead, they are less agile, they have to move slower, they can't adapt and be as nimble as you can, and it's likely their execs may not be able to see trends and pitfalls as well as fractional ones can so they may not be as easily avoidable for them.) HOT TAKE: if you're a founder, people are probably intimidated by you. Most of us think of ourselves as extraordinarily approachable. But listen, if you are a CEO, a founder, an executive... you’re not. I don’t care if you are the nicest person in all of human existence; people have their own stories and relationships to power. AND chances are, you are not the nicest most approachable person in the world, because those of us who find ourselves in leadership positions have intensity in our being that creates a sense of intimidation. So, remember, if people aren’t sharing with you, talking to you, or taking risks in front of you, their reality is valid. You’re intimidating (to them!) AND it’s your responsibility. You are responsible for all that comes into a room with you, whether you’re conscious of it or not. So get conscious, so you can start leading. #leadership #startups #selfawareness

Building meaningful relationships is inefficient and not scalable...try being efficient with your spouse's relationship and let me know how that goes 😁. IMO - business without meaningful relationships is meaningless. Efficiency is a key driver of building a scaled up, profitable business. But just make sure you counter-balance it with the inefficiency of building true human connection. Why? Because then your big, profitable business will have a bigger impact on the world than just generating monetary wealth. An impact on human lives, which in the end - is where the true beauty of business resides.

🦋 Are you longing for clarity and more energy in your life? 🦋 Earlier this year, I began working with a female tech and product leader who was feeling stuck, clouded by self-doubt, and deeply longing to create more impact, feel energized, and at ease with herself.
