Here's how you can navigate changing market conditions as a Venture Capitalist.
As a venture investor, my job is to underwrite companies with check sizes and deal terms that align with their perceived risk of failure. Market conditions are a crucial part of this equation. For example, the same company in 2020 would have a completely different valuation, interest rate, and check size today, given the current lack of dry powder and the widespread pullback in spending from investors. Reframing venture capital as calculated risk-taking has allowed me to approach deals with a new perspective and critical thinking. As a founder, I didn’t fully grasp this, but now I see that venture capital is fundamentally about making informed, calculated risks.
