Project update! My application tracking extension is now doing fuzzier matching and injecting new information into LinkedIn (and other sites) to keep me from doubling up on applications. Next up: local storage and bulk import/export operations...

The Operator's handbook is a great guide to the various operations disciplines like #businessoperations or #bizops, #revenueoperations or #revops, #financialops or #finops,#legalops, #marketingops, #peopleops and #productoperations / #productops that have emerged as a result of shift from hardware to software-based value creation (see my previous post too --> https://lnkd.in/gwNWwkNh?). Great introduction, though I find it lacking as it did not include factory operations, supply chain, store operations that rely far more on offline-online interfaces. For any operator out there, process, analytics, metrics, cadence, solutioning and execution are the key concepts to apply.

Following the Pareto principle 80% of the outcome can be achieved by applying 20% of the effort. And if a new product or feature is being built typically the remaining >=20% of the outcome (usually more than that) will not be needed at all or something altogether different will be required as more is gradually discovered after the first release. Defining the scope wisely and iteratively improving on the first version is key to improved speed, quality and reduced costs. Also feedback will be received much faster and learning will happen earlier. In comparison in the classical waterfall model scope is fixed, delivery is late, costs are exceeded, quality suffers under the time pressure to follow the plan and feedback after the release is either received too late or ignored altogether. The result is wasted effort and less value delivered. It comes down to working smart, delivering often, producing value and learning fast from the users vs following the plan, being late, overrunning budget, ignoring feedback and producing hard to use or useless software #extremeprogramming #agile #productmanagement #softwaredevelopment #paretoprinciple #waterfall

Let's 🎉 celebrate 🎉 the fact that AFLAC users have the ability to use passkeys to speed their logins, improving the user experience, and reducing their customer service costs. But I can't overlook this quote: "Passwords are still in place for users who are not ready to move to passkey, or as an alternate path if needed." In other words, users are still subject to the risks of shared secrets. The security needle hasn't been moved in a material way and phishing resistance hasn't been achieved. Progress is good, but let's not oversell the benefits of passkeys in deployments when we haven't removed the risk of shared secrets or weak account recovery mechanisms. What do you think?

Get your code into production. One of my pet peeves is when a team develops new functionality QA for months before pushing to production…then are surprised when they try to push to production and (1) 4233 things break and (2) their business counterparts are underwhelmed with the result. My teams generally push to production every sprint - each user story must go into production Developing a muscle for regularly and frequently pushing changes as an IT/data organization forces you to: 1️⃣ Automate: common processes, security checks, quality 2️⃣ Containerize: everything should be reproducible including environments and packages 3️⃣ Decouple: if your deployment breaks it should not affect other teams/deployments 4️⃣ Simplify: deploy less at a time, also reducing risk

Along with general engineering and architecture efforts, I've spent the past 12 years helping orgs move from a dev-ops team to a dev-ops mentality. One thing I've refined and learned from+with others along the way is the concept of a "Dev Ops Contract". I rarely post on LinkedIn, but I'm curious to find some folks to chat with about some ideas for an Enterprise Product Management product. My thesis is that the current suite of tools do not do a sufficient job providing features for managing sprawling, complex suites of products + product lines that mature tech organizations maintain. Most PM products are geared toward startups and smaller companies with simpler products, but few tools help PMs and other leaders manage the sprawling complexity of a situation like 30 products over 6 product lines, 14 industry solutions, and components from a dozen acquisitions. All the small web shops should look into this as a funnel for new biz and all the small and medium size businesses should really consider where your best ROI is at. Fix it and be accessible!
