Black Myth: Wukong just launched today, and it’s already making headlines for topping charts. While much has been said about its impressive numbers, I believe the journey to this success is rooted in the decision to choose Sun Wukong, the hero from the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, to be the main protagonist in a AAA game. Although Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, has appeared in popular games like League of Legends and Dota 2, there haven’t been many AAA titles that have spotlighted him as the main character. The notable exception is Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (2010) by Ninja Theory, which offered a more loosely adapted version of the character. Sun Wukong is arguably the most recognizable Chinese mythological figure globally. He inspired Goku from Dragon Ball and has been the subject of numerous films. Building a AAA game around him naturally attracts global attention. Probably the second most widely known Chinese story is Romance of the Three Kingdoms—but this has been extensively covered by Koei Tecmo's Dynasty Warriors series. Other Chinese mythological characters like Nezha, Chang’e, and Hou Yi might not resonate as strongly with international audiences. In contrast to Enslaved, Black Myth: Wukong brings the character to life with his iconic powers: Using magic hair! Summoning clones! Enlarging and shrinking his staff! This portrayal is exactly what many fans have been eager to see in a AAA video game. Additionally, following on the success of Soulslike games from From Software, allows it to have the perfect blend to succeed. Black Myth strikes the perfect balance for success: It’s the right game, right IP for a vast audience, at the perfect time. As someone of Chinese descent who grew up with this folklore—watching Stephen Chow’s A Chinese Odyssey, among other media—seeing my culture represented in a AAA video game is a profound experience. While I also appreciate Norse and Greek mythology and their game adaptations, seeing one's own culture featured is rare in Asian games (outside of Japan). The game’s subtle cultural elements, such as replacing 'Bonfires' with lighting incense on an altar, resonate deeply with me. So, what’s next? Black Myth: Wukong has set a high bar for Asian gaming studios, but also definitively proves we have the talent in Asia. I predict it will ignite a new era of AAA games emerging not only from China but from the rest of Asia (excluding Japan, which is already established). While Sun Wukong is a well-known IP that provided a strong foundation for Game Science, I wouldn’t be surprised to see more Asian developers begin to take more risks in exploring their own cultural folklore. These stories might not be as universally recognized as Journey to the West, and not all of these games will achieve massive success, but they highlight the rich talent in Asia and compelling Asian narratives waiting to be shared with the global audience. And what fascinating stories they will be.

Some good resume advice here for job seekers from a professional recruiter: #1 - List your accomplishments, not your duties. #2 - Keep the layout basic. Avoid gimmicky colors or graphics so your accomplishments are the focus. #3 - Include the month as well as year for each position you've held (Dec 2021-Jan 2022 tells a very different story than 20121-2022).

I feel like people aren't taking the introduction of Stems on the MPC seriously. This is the end of sampling as we know it – the art of digging for records to find the perfect drum break, sample snippet and rare acapella is over. As is the art of chopping those samples to create something new from some old using only a few seconds of the perfect audio, an art that often defines one producer from the next. Now, everything is fair game – every drum beat, every acapella, every bassline is yours to play with. Of course, it's very exciting and it will lead to a new form of creativity. But it's the death knell of what the MPC itself became famous for and what many producers mastered over the years – finding beauty in limitation. With over 100 million tracks on streaming services and four stems per track, there are now at least 400 million options for producers to choose from. I expect we'll see new genres, new sounds and new lawsuits, but it's a huge story that feels like it's going under the radar. Not to mention the complexity it introduces for labels and rightsholders to track what samples are being used. BRB, off to get an MPC. https://lnkd.in/encv2gYV

Imma just leave this right here 🤣 PS. if you're out of work due to a layoff my suggestion is to note that on your resume so the recruiter or hiring team doesn't have to guess why you're no longer there. Ex. Worked at XYZ Company from January 2020 - August 2024 (affected by company-wide layoffs) ...or something similar. At least that's what I did 🤷🏻♀️📝 #YoureWelcome #Recruiter #Recruiting #Interviewing #Hiring #GameDevJobs

The Vatican, seat of the Roman Catholic church, which has been blending tradition with science and cutting-edge tech for decades with the Vatican Observatory for astronomical studies, by digitizing ancient manuscripts for preservation, and applying advanced conservation techniques to safeguard artworks, launched an AI-powered digital twin of St. Peter's Basilica--a more than 400-year-old masterpiece of Renaissance and Baroque architecture that took over 100 years to complete, early this month. The twin, which was developed in just a month in partnership with Microsoft and a Paris-based digital preservation company, Iconem, will provide an immersive virtual experience of the Basilica to millions from any part of the world. While Iconem used multiple devices including drones, 3D cameras, and lasers to capture more than 400,000 high-resolution images of the Basilica, the data was securely backed up and stored on Microsoft's Azure Cloud. Microsoft’s AI tools refined the digital twin, producing a 3D representation accurate to the millimeter, and also used AI to help detect and map structural vulnerabilities like cracks and missing mosaic tiles. Digital twins or virtual representations of physical entities like manufacturing plants, buildings, temples, churches, mosques, or heritage sites, have been created over the last two decades using technologies like LiDAR scanning, 3D mapping, and photogrammetry. For instance, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTCI) and Tata Trusts partnered with the Archaelogical Survey of India (ASI) for over a decade to restore Delhi’s Humayun Tomb and Nizamuddin Basti with the help of laser scanners and 3D mapping. The Ministry of Tourism collaborated with Google for 'Incredible India' to create virtual walk-throughs of famous historical places. However, most of these models have traditionally been static ones. Digital twins are now being empowered with AI, enabling detailed documentation, monitoring, and proactive conservation of heritage sites. Last week, The Post ran Sam Altman's techno-jingoistic call for American hegemony over AI & regulatory capture for him. This week, it runs a letter from the doomer AI cult Future of Life Institution debating him, and a letter from an AI founder who brags on LinkedIn about his "superpower." Yeesh. Can we take AI out of the hands of these BSD geeks and hand it over to some sane liberal arts majors, please? There’s no way for humanity to win an AI arms race https://lnkd.in/eUx7Dt-K

As RPGs, and narrative-driven video games in general, have gotten longer and longer over the years, what used to be one of my favorite categories became one I simply didn’t have the time nor tolerance for anymore. And then, I stumbled upon what is threatening to become one of my favorite games in a long time: Persona 3 Reload. #gaming #storytelling https://lnkd.in/evs8nPPx

From Storytelling to Cloud Security: My Unconventional Journey in Tech My career path has not followed the typical trajectory, but that's what makes it so exciting! My story began behind the lens, capturing moments through photography and cinematography. As my passion for narrative unfolded, I transitioned into the world of film and television, eventually directing content for TV shows. While I loved bringing stories to life, I felt a growing pull towards the ever-evolving realm of technology. I witnessed the transformative power of tech in the media industry, and I wanted to be a part of it. So, last year, I decided to take a leap and upskill myself. Driven by a desire to understand the infrastructure behind the magic, I delved into the world of cloud computing. Thanks to a scholarship at ALX Africa, I earned my AWS Cloud Practitioner and Solutions Architect certifications. This new found knowledge opened my eyes to the possibilities of cloud security, a critical aspect of protecting data and systems in the digital age. Currently, I'm applying my learnings at 10Alytics through a cybersecurity internship. This role allows me to explore the fascinating world of cloud security and understand how to build secure environments. But the journey doesn't end there. My ultimate goal is to find the intersection of creativity and technology. I envision leveraging my storytelling background and technical expertise to develop innovative solutions for a secure and engaging online world. Here's where you come in! I'm eager to connect with fellow tech enthusiasts and security professionals. Looking forward to collaboration opportunities and discussions on how we can secure the future of the cloud while fostering creativity within it. #cloudsecurity #careerchange #creativityandtech #lifelonglearning

I love that accessible gaming is getting more and more awareness. The Last of Us 2 was a milesteone and things are getting better and better! NOTE: NPR's podcast page doesn't provide a transcript, so if you need to read the podcast, I recommend turning on Chrome's Live Caption feature - it'll generate the captions for you on the fly (and will feed into a refreshable braille display). #a11y #accessibility

"Recent news from South Korea about a robot shutting down due to excessive workload has sparked important discussions. Two key takeaways come to mind: 1. Work-life balance is crucial: If a robot can be pushed to the point of "suicide," imagine the impact on humans. Let's prioritize our well-being and avoid overloading ourselves and our teams. 2. The future of AI: As we develop more advanced technologies, we must consider their limitations and potential consequences. Is AI truly the future, or are we neglecting human values in the process? Let's continue the conversation and explore how we can harness the benefits of technology while prioritizing our well-being and humanity." Feel free to share and spark a discussion in comments and DM!

I'm a little late in posting this, but I recently wrote about the various ways Tribeca incorporated AI during the 2024 film festival earlier this month — including two separate series of AI-generated shorts with OpenAI and Runway. After attending the premiere of "Sora Shorts," I interviewed Tribeca Enterprises CEO jane Rosenthal about integrating AI into this year's festival and why she thinks it's important to be a part of conversations. She noted that the only way to eliminate fear of and questions about it is to be a part of the conversation. Tribeca 2024 also screened two AI-related documentaries. One, "The Thinking Game" starred Google DeepMind co-founder and CEO Demis Hassabis. Another, " How I Faked My Life With AI," examined the darker sides of AI and explored how AI-generated content can damage trust in personal relationships and society. “Ethical AI and being able to train on ethical models and on clean models is key,” Rosenthal told me. “And that’s where having conversations where you’re partnering and working with OpenAI, you’re talking to DeepMind, you’re talking to Runway AI, that’s where you’re going to solve [issues].” Another person I spoke with was Jamie Umpherson, who said submissions for the second year of Runway's AI Film Festival grew from 300 last year to 3,000 this year. AI also came up in plenty of marketing-related talks on stage during this year's TribecaX conference, top marketing execs from Publicis Media, IPG Mediabrands, Accenture, adidas, General Motors and Molson Coors Beverage Company. Read my full Digiday story (link below) to learn more about Tribeca's approach to AI, and hear what filmmakers commissioned to create AI-generated films with Sora had to say about both the risks and rewards that come with using AI video tools. #Sora #OpenAI #AI #hollywood #marketing #generativeAI

Q I've been getting a lot this week: "Should I slow down my search since everyone is off for the holidays?" ABSOLUTELY NOT ‼️ NOW is your chance to get a 🦶 in the 🚪 Think about it -- You're competing with hundreds of other applicants, many who are wondering the same thing. A lot of them will decide to take a break and resume their operations after the holidays. So why should you do the same? Recruiters DO work over the holidays. In fact, many of them take this time to catch up on applications, get back to eager candidates, and focus their efforts on sourcing talent. Keep up your networking and applications during the time when everyone else is snoozing. You might just get ahead :)

Like everyone, I've been messing around with generative AI innovations over the last 12-18 months. One of the most fascinating areas for me is the development of music composition services that have been trained on huge libraries of songs across many different genres. These enable you to generate 'text-to-songs', with full compositions being 'created' by the services in a matter of seconds. You define the style of music, the focus of the lyrics, and perhaps a little background information to help tell the story you want to get across. The quite scary part that's also quite magical, if ethically dubious, is how life-like these genAI-created songs are. It's exciting giving the track you've asked to be generated its first listen and it's difficult to get your head around how the AI is able to spew out a song that appears to be performed by a singer with a full band backing, harmonies, guitar solos, beats, scratches, whatever you like. It's all created in seconds, right in front of your eyes. The service I used will even create a couple of variations - these are basically two different songs with different chord sequences, structures, feel, melodies etc - with the same lyrics and genre - so you can see which one you like the most. I used a service called Suno to generate maybe 20-30 songs, and then stopped by subscription after a day or two, partly as it feels like cheating having songs 'written' for you in this way. I decided to choose a few of the songs Suno had created for me, and produce my own 'cover versions'. For these, I sang and played everything, but tried to keep the arrangements and 'feel' quite similar to the original AI-generated songs I'd asked Suno to make. Here's one of them, called Better Days. It's a little twee, and quite sentimental and everything, and obviously it's quite generic, but I also think I quite like it. I'm not sure how I feel about liking it a bit, as it's just been created by clever algorithms trained on ripping off what human songwriters do by instinct. Anyway, seeing as though I've created this cover version, I thought I may as well share it. I think the prompts for this were something like, 'A folk pop song about how things will pick up and look brighter in the future, helping you get over some challenging times' or something along those lines. #generativeAI #AI #music #composition #Suno #genAI #creativity
