Meta’s latest generative video model is called Movie Gen, and true to its name turns text prompts into relatively realistic video with sound… but thankfully no voice just yet. And wisely they are not giving this one a public release. Movie Gen is actually a collection (or “cast” as they put it) of foundation models, the largest of which is the text-to-video bit. Meta claims it outperforms the likes of Runway’s Gen3, LumaLabs’ latest, and Kling1.5, though as always this type of thing is more to show that they are playing the same game than that Movie Gen wins. Major Record Labels Sue AI Company Behind 'BBL Drizzy': A group of record labels including the big three -- Universal Music Group (UMG), Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Records -- are suing two of the top names in generative AI music making, alleging the companies violated their copyright "en masse." From a report: The two AI companies, Suno and Udio, use text prompts to churn out original songs. Both companies have enjoyed a level of success: Suno is available for use in Microsoft Copilot though a partnership with the tech giant. Udio was used to create "BBL Drizzy," one of the more notable examples of AI music going viral. The case against Suno was filed in Boston federal court, and the Udio case was filed in New York. The labels say artists across genres and eras had their work used without consent. The lawsuits were brought by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the powerful group representing major players in the music industry, and a group of labels. The RIAA is seeking damages of up to $150,000 per work, along with other fees. Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Want to craft an NYT bestseller? Believe it or not, but James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, cracked the code by engineering a flawless book launch. Planning started 15 months ahead. More than 300 podcast hosts reached. Close to 100 episodes recorded. Twas no ordinary launch. 🚀 His secret? Infiltrating key communities. Vegans, VCs, mommy bloggers, they all became champions of his work. Word-of-mouth turned into a strategic weapon.📣 The result? His book became an omnipresent discussion. Effortless sharing was another masterstroke. With 'click-to-tweet' quotes, he unleashed a social media storm.🌪️ What's the takeaway? Stellar content is just part of the recipe. But engineered word-of-mouth? That's the secret sauce to a bestseller.🥇 (As I was once told: without effective marketing, it's like leaving Shakespeare in a room to write for himself.) Let's discuss: How do we create our own word-of-mouth magic?💭👇 #MarketingStrategy #BestSellerBlueprint #WordOfMouthMarketing

Movie Review: Rebel Moon Part 2 - A Disappointing Sequel As the curtains draw on Zack Snyder's latest sci-fi spectacle, "Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver," viewers are left with a bitter aftertaste of missed opportunities and unfulfilled promises. Despite a defined focus, the sequel fails to capitalize on its potential, succumbing to a barrage of flaws that tarnish its cinematic journey. Directed by: Zack Snyder *ing: Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Jena Malone, Anthony Hopkins, Cary Elwes Runtime: 122 Minutes From the onset, Snyder's ambitious sequel falters, stumbling over frivolous scenes, lackluster dialogue, and an incessant need for exposition. While the lore-laden universe promises intrigue, it collapses under the weight of its underdeveloped characters and uninspired storytelling. Despite its defined objective, "Rebel Moon – Part Two" languishes in a sea of mediocrity, trapped in a cycle of sluggish pacing and tedious backstory. Snyder's attempts at epic grandeur are overshadowed by wooden performances and an overreliance on slow-motion sequences that serve more as filler than substance. Even as the climax looms, the action falls flat, devoid of depth and lacking in emotional resonance. The characters, mere caricatures of their potential selves, fail to evoke empathy or investment, leaving audiences adrift in a sea of apathy. As the credits roll, one can't help but ponder the future of Snyder's envisioned franchise. With plans for four more films, the prospect seems daunting, given the lacklustre reception of its first two installments. In a landscape marred by missed opportunities and squandered potential, one can't help but question: does "Rebel Moon" deserve to continue its journey? In conclusion, "Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver" falls short of its lofty ambitions, delivering a lacklustre sequel that fails to capture the imagination or ignite the senses. With a heavy heart, one can only hope for brighter horizons in the vast expanse of cinematic storytelling. #RebelMoon #ZackSnyder #Netflix

At the end of 2022, the year that generative AI ominously forced itself onto the art scene, photographer and artists’ rights activist Jingna Zhang was feeling frustrated. Like so many, she had been hoping that ArtStation would finally see the light and support the art community by banning the waves of AI-generated images that were flooding the site. Instead it doubled down and issued a statement saying it didn’t want to stifle AI research. Stunned by this betrayal, Jingna, who is also part of two class-action lawsuits suing AI companies for theft of artists’ work, hatched a plan to build a new platform where artists’ interests come first, making it different to other social media platforms for creatives. Working with a small team of volunteers and self-funding the project, she laid the foundations for Cara, an art portfolio and social app that doesn’t host AI art, and automatically adds NoAI tags to let AI companies know that the owner doesn’t consent to their work being scraped. It’s also integrated with Glaze, a tool for cloaking images so they can’t be used to train AI models. The result is a space where people can find human artists easily, and artists can come together to support each other as they navigate the changes that AI is bringing to their passions and their livelihoods. "Out Of “Luck”: Sohum Shah’s Suit Against Netflix Production – Squid Games" On September 17, 2021, Netflix’s viewership soared with the release of "Squid Game," which became the most-watched show of the year, attracting over 142 million views. However, Netflix now faces a lawsuit from Indian director Soham Shah, who claims the series plagiarized his 2009 film "Luck." Shah alleges that both works share striking similarities in plot and themes, particularly the exploitation of financially disadvantaged participants in deadly games for the entertainment of the wealthy. He seeks a permanent injunction and damages, asserting that Hwang Dong-Hyuk began writing "Squid Game" in 2009, the same year his film was released. The lawsuit raises important questions about copyright law, particularly concerning the distinction between shared ideas and specific expressions protected under copyright. While copyright does not protect ideas, the court must determine if the similarities between the two works extend beyond mere concepts. The case could set a significant precedent in the rapidly evolving OTT space, highlighting the delicate balance between protecting intellectual property and allowing creative freedom. The outcome will be crucial for ensuring a fair and innovative entertainment landscape as platforms like Netflix continue to expand globally. ARKANSANS FOR THE ARTS
“Over the last year, as money drained from the art market, young art stars around the world experienced dramatic setbacks that submerged their careers.” The New York Times More: “What happened to the bull market and the notion that all artworks appreciate in value? The art market has been experiencing a downturn for the last few years, but the slump has been particularly acute for young artists. During the early pandemic, a speculative boom driven by a misplaced belief in quick returns set in, with collectors spending $712 million at auction in 2021 on works by artists born after 1974 — a giant leap from the $259 million buyers spent just a year earlier. But from 2021 to 2023, the prices for these artists — “ultracontemporary” is the industry term for them — plummeted by almost a third, according to the Artnet Price Database.” Experts say the downward trend is continuing; in the first half of 2024, sales of work by young artists fell 39 percent over last year. Collectors had overestimated the market’s strength; fearing the work might soon become impossible to sell, they wanted to make at least some of their money back — regardless of what public flops might mean for an artist’s future. Artists rarely benefit from high auction prices, since most works at auction are sold by collectors who have bought their works earlier and are now hoping to sell them for a profit. The artists also rarely speak — as they do here — about how art market speculation affects them personally and professionally.” https://lnkd.in/e2_Yvqzh #youngartists #arteconomy #artmarket

YouTube CEO, Susan Wojcicki, recently expressed her belief that YouTubers and their unique content should be recognized by the Emmy awards. In a conversation with Film Companion about the globalization of content, she emphasized the exceptional work produced by creators on YouTube that deserve more professional acknowledgment. Wojcicki stated that some of the best content does not come from traditional media but from creative individuals on the platform. She suggested a category within the award shows that recognizes global creators could play an integral part in highlighting this talent. The move, she believes, would validate the efforts of creators globally and would create a ripple effect among other awarding bodies to acknowledge the changing face of digital content. Her sentiments come amid debates around including YouTube in more mainstream entertainment consideration. Advocates argue that online productions are becoming increasingly influential to the global audience, thus should be recognized within industry awards such as the Emmys. However, this idea is yet to be universally embraced, with some arguing that YouTube is still primarily a user-based platform, subject to less stringent quality control than traditional broadcasting. Despite these arguments, YouTube has made significant strides in raising the bar for online content. Not only has it given a platform to budding creatives, but it also attracted established names in entertainment who now consider the site a viable platform for their work. The future promises more discussion around the place YouTube holds in the mainstream entertainment industry, but the CEO anticipates it will be in a positive direction. It's a testament to the power of digital content and its ability to reach a global audience, altering perceptions of the traditional media landscape.
