Analysis: Key technical leader departs OpenAI Ilya Sutskever, really is the brains behind the whole operation. Chief Scientist, board member and co-founder.. This happened two days after, the hype announcement of GPT-4o. With both Andrej Karpathy & Ilya Sutskever leaving within the last few months, this leaves a rather large technical gap in the leadership team of the Research Lab. The GPT-4o announcement happening 1 day before 'Google I/O 2024', largely overshadowing the event. Personally I think this is good for Microsoft, its stock is up 8% this month, to put that in perspective - 250 billion USD, or 5 and half Twitters!! Previously OpenAI actively attempted to remove all emotions from their AI, recent audio demos of the new speech model seems to be going in the other direction using science fiction as a product roadmap. The curious change is rather sudden and may be explained by Mustafa Suleyman recently becoming the CEO of Microsoft AI Mustafa Suleyman previously CEO of Inflection AI was creating an emotionally aware chatbot called 'Pi'. 1 day ago 'John Schulman' one of the remaining technical co-founders of OpenAI, was the guest of a well known AI podcast, this appearance seems genuine and not a PR effort - https://lnkd.in/gEcrvmvU Big changes in the AI world, remember OpenAI is a Research Lab first and foremost - with many of the founding researchers departing within a few months, sending an interesting market signal. Goldcast's startup journey has perfectly mapped the last 4 crazy years of SaaS. Palash Soni and his cofounders first started the company in 2021 to build great, customizable virtual event solutions for enterprise marketers. While their business kept growing past the pandemic, it was clear that overall spend was shifting back to IRL events fast. However, video consumption continued to rise and quickly became the best way to build your brand and an audience in software - if you knew how to operationalize video marketing. Goldcast's product evolution from a virtual events platform to an AI-native video marketing solution has been incredible to watch. The company had its best quarter yet, adding customers like OpenAI and Coupa Software and I couldn't be more proud. (CC Olivia Moore, Seema Amble) Happyrobot is reinventing communication for logistics - starting with AI phone agents that can handle load updates, check calls, negotiations, and more. Freight is a massive market, which today runs on calls, faxes, and emails. AI can handle this back-and-forth at much lower cost than humans and with 24/7 uptime, enabling brokers and carriers to pick up every call. This unlocks better margins, and frees up employee time to build deeper relationships. Over the last year, Happyrobot has completed more than 1M calls for some of the largest players in freight. Customers use Happyrobot to trigger custom workflows during and after each call, connected to their data systems...and, even transfer to a live human if needed. The last gen of freight software cos got it wrong by trying to disrupt the broker. We (+ the HappyRobot team!) believe brokers are the experts, and the right approach is empowering them. We're excited to partner with logistics leaders on this round - including Ryder System, Inc. Next one up, Flagler Health! In an attempt to demystify some of the non-obvious elements we found when we first met the founders of our fastest growing portfolio companies at 186 Ventures, here is the third edition of the "idiosyncratic phenomenon". This highlight will be on Albert Katz, Leon Anijar, and Will Hu and their journey building Flagler Health to bring unprecedented AI enabled patient care to the world of musculoskeletal (MsK) providers. As the healthcare industry shifts to a value based care paradigm, there will be increased pressure on the entire industry to ensure patient outcomes improve, all the while helping providers generate more revenue / become more cost efficient. Since we co-led their March, 2024 seed round with Streamlined, the company has rolled out some of their newest remote therapeutic and chronic condition management features to many patients and providers alike, experiencing high revenue growth in such a short period of time. Since early 2021, VC quarterly exit values have plummeted to $50B or below, a stark contrast to the six consecutive quarters of $100B+ exits before then.
