Stability management and why organizations need it. In contrast with change management, which arrives only when a particular change is mooted, stability management on the other hand addresses fundamental human psychological needs that can’t be switched on and off at will, thus needs to be a continuous, always-on organizational discipline. Stability management is a way of managing an environment, not a way of navigating a moment.

Strategy toward socially accountable college/university Thanks Alex Nesbitt for sharing this valuable post and make clear difference between strategy and planning, I want to take it from here to elaborate with the context of medical education. At a university or a college level, strategy is about setting the vision, while planning is about executing it efficiently. For instance, if our strategic goal is to transform the college into socially accountable , we need to design a curriculum that not only builds competencies for a socially accountable doctors but also redirects research and community service toward serving the community in the region our medical school serves and beyond 🌍. 🥅🎯Planning then focuses on the nuts and bolts—creating courses, training faculty 👩‍🏫, and building community partnerships 🤝, reshape the services provided at PHC or tertiary level w to make that vision a reality. Aligning strategy with planning ensures we’re not just setting goals, but actively working towards them 🚀. 🎓 Four principles need to be at the center of strategic leadership in higher education, and they are the focus of my upcoming book, Pass /Fail (going to print this month—eek!). 1) Embrace Shared Governance: Embracing shared governance is a key theme in my section on strategic planning (Chapters 3–5). Higher education leaders must know how to lead by influence rather than authority. This requires overcoming silos and understanding the priorities of all stakeholders, including the board, the cabinet, and the faculty senate. 2) Be the Voice of the Students: Being the voice of the students is a central notion in my section on brand (Chapters 6–8). Understanding what students want and need and their challenges in the enrollment process and during their experience at the institution is critical to building strong brand awareness and ambassadorship. It’s also a strong framework through which to navigate leadership discussions. 3) Study the Market: Studying the market is a critical principle in my section on enrollment (Chapters 9–11). Higher education’s core demographics are changing, and so are the consumer preferences around it. Higher education leaders will be most effective when equipped with a strong understanding of their institutional data, their competitive landscape, and regional and wider market demands for the type of education they offer. 4) Build a Mission-Focused Culture: My section on culture (Chapters 12–14) is perhaps the most critical for successful leadership. Institutions that want their students, faculty, and staff members to feel a deep sense of belonging—which results in retention, brand ambassadorship, and alumni giving—must be intentional about how individuals and groups feel and behave on their campuses. Values are at the core of leadership. There were multiple reasons for why I stepped down from my first supervisor role after just 13 months. However, one of the top reasons was that there was a serious disconnect within our leadership team between what we each believed to be our ideal values, our personal values, and the organization's values. Having clarity around one's values as a leader helps to create an environment where trust has an opportunity to grow and thrive.
