HELLO ST. LOUIS!!! It was great to spend some time with John J. Gallia Jr., CFP® , Jon-Paul Brown, CMFC ® , Kevin Murphy, CFP® , Brittani Schaefer, CFP®, ChFC® , and Christine Wedell last night. Topics on the agenda included returns versus volatility, cavemen, and why you should turn off your TV. Did you know that it’s incredibly difficult for our brains to deal with randomness? We don’t like the unexplained. We’re wired to find patterns in data - to be able to predict. It’s how you know what food to order at a restaurant, and how you avoid getting burned in the kitchen. As a result, it’s hard for us to wrap our heads around something truly random. We go to great lengths to attempt to explain it. We might even convince ourselves that we can predict it. It allows us to build connections with colleagues no matter how far and deliver tailored solutions to clients around the world. I am a big believer of “diversity of views” to build best possible solutions. Recently, I had the opportunity to continue to connect with our Northern Trust internal partners and clients across the globe during my latest travels, visiting the United Kingdom, Ireland, Monaco, and The Netherlands.  While in London, I had the chance to speak at an event hosted by our EMEA and North America Latin Heritage Business Resource Council. Special thanks to Camila Sastoque, Roberto Crivari, Virgilio Mendoza, Liliana Pachon, FCCA, and Annette Martin for organizing and hosting such an energizing event. During this event, I shared my perspective on seizing career opportunities as well as facing and overcoming challenges while taking on broader leadership and global roles: · “Speak slow, speak less, speak last” – Remember to speak slowly and clearly when engaging large audiences. Take time to refine your stories so that your messages are clear and concise. Listen carefully before speaking.  · “When under stress, take time to pause and not quickly react” – Although important, emotions shouldn’t completely lead our decision-making. Try to keep your emotions balanced and consider the emotions of others while keeping collaboration and progress top of mind. · “Leverage what you learn to motivate and inspire others” – Learn both from others and your experiences, and apply those insights to improve your work and inspire others to achieve their personal and professional aspirations. When people are inspired, everyone can strengthen teamwork, boost morale, and achieve team goals. Treat partners like clients – listen to their needs, and treat them with dignity and respect. Through all of our Northern Trust Business Resource Councils we can continue to offer events such as these that drive an inclusive and collaborative culture, exemplifying what it means to be #OneNorthernTrust.

A funny thing happened on the way to Milwaukee. So, there's a lot happening in the political realm lately - unlesss you're on one of those summer beach trips where Wi-Fi access is spotty. (Those work emails saying I have limited "access" to online activities kill me. Just be honest: "I have limited INTEREST in your email while I'm away"'is such a more honest approach.) Much of what is happening in politics today is truly historical in nature and, of course, a lot of it is nonsense, too. Nothing should shock me these days because our whole process is such an obnoxious mess. But one headlight really stood out today: POTUS wants SCOTUS term limits. Translation: President Biden wants Supreme Court Justices to have set terms - nor lifetime appointments. This is really rich. Here's a guy who's been in Washington since Watergate. His entire campaign is off the rails because if he's re-elected he will be almost 90 when his term ends. And now this main is going to champion term limits for judges? I need to sit down. (And order a drink: "Waiter!") Ah. Breathe. Warren Buffett believes we can solve the national debt overnight. If the Federal deficit is more than 2%, this triggers every sitting Congressperson to be removed from office. This is like term limits with an embedded performance review. Back to the earlier point. Show of hands: what if we agree all members of the Legislative, Judicial and Executive Branches were required to step down at, say, the age of 75. Why have term limits if a person can also remain on the job until they're 100 years old? Am I terrible for even bringing this up? Answer from some: "Mike; you were terrible way before you brought this up." But in all seriousness: what reasonable person in our country would say no to a combo package deal on term AND age limits for every elected or appointed official in Washington. Congress and the White House teaming up to pick on the Supreme Court is, of course, a non starter. If we all join hands and work on this together, we may be onto something. Elsewhere, Shohei Ohtani hit a three-run bomb in the MLB All-Star game tonight. And the National League lost again, anyways. As my son young noted: "Ohtani might end up being the greatest player of all time." Hard - at this point - to disagree.
