I recently used the classic What, So What, Now What framework and was reminded of its flexibility, simplicity and effectiveness as a powerful tool to drive deeper reflection and create more meaningful actions. It can be used for team or individual reflection, for project work and on a larger scale for organizations to identify and resolve issues. And it is an excellent framework to help drive continuous improvement. I have used this framework both within short time windows (two hours or less) and as an expanded process in a full day session. The What, So What, Now What framework ensures that teams and organizations don’t jump directly to solutions without having a shared understanding of the situation and of the implications of the situation. Here’s what the framework looks like: 🔍 What? Start by observing and describing the situation. This step is all about gathering facts and details. What happened? What did you notice? Being objective and thorough in this phase sets a solid foundation for deeper analysis. 💡 So What? Next, delve into the significance of the situation. Why is it important? What are the implications? It’s most effective if you can look at implications from several lenses and perspectives. This step encourages you to analyze the data and draw insights. Understanding the "so what" helps in identifying patterns, uncovering underlying issues, and recognizing opportunities. 🚀 Now What? Finally, focus on actionable steps. What will you do next? How can you apply the insights gained? This step is crucial for turning reflection into action. It empowers you to create plans, set goals, and make informed decisions that lead to positive change. By integrating the "What, So What, Now What" framework into your team’s routine, you will enhance your organization’s reflective practices, improve problem-solving skills and drive continuous improvement. Haven’t heard of pre-mortem? It’s about anticipating what could go wrong before a project begins. In doing so, project participants can mitigate potential challenges before they appear. A pre-mortem doesn’t only have to look for what could go wrong. It can also identify project strengths and exploit opportunities, signaling a strengths-based approach. No matter which direction you lean towards, use a pre-mortem as a proactive way to focus a team on what lies ahead. Generic self-development coaching is hardly comparable to Emotional Intelligence executive coaching for leadership or physician burnout. For executive coaching services procured by organizations like Loudoun County, the payee (coaching firm) typically proposes pricing structures and rates, which the contracting organization negotiates and agrees upon. Specifically, the RFP requires the coaching firm to provide the cost to administer 360 leadership assessments for around 100 leaders. Cost for group assessment interpretation sessions for groups of up to 20 leaders Hourly rate for individual coaching services. The organization will be billed for any other expenses. This indicates that while the coaching firm proposes pricing, the contracting organization has the final say in determining reasonable rates for the required services. The results do not explicitly differentiate between life coaching for personal development and executive/leadership coaching. However, it is sensible to expect pricing structures to differ based on the coaching objectives, target audience, and specific services provided. Organizations would likely negotiate appropriate rates commensurate with the value and complexity of the coaching engagement. In summary, while the payee (coaching firm) can propose pricing, the contracting organization ultimately determines reasonable rates for the coaching services based on their requirements and budget constraints. In contrast, generic coaching for personal development is unlikely to produce the level of income that is typical for niche coaching for leadership, burnout or disruptive behavior.
