“Facts don’t change minds because, most often, it’s the framework through which we analyze them that is at stake”. Some philosophers have argued that, despite widespread intuitions to the contrary, knowledge is not merely a matter of representation but also of construction, and that truth cannot be completely detached from human needs and interests. John Dewey, for example, argued that the object of knowledge is the product of enquiry and not something that exists independently of that enquiry. But this can’t be right. After all, scientists discovered DNA, distant planets and gravity, they did not create them. Facts are facts. Any other view seems disastrous, from the vague assertion that we all create our own truth to the Nietzschean claim that it’s interpretations all the way down. Without a shared target that we all aim at getting right, rational discussion is no longer possible. ☑️ *READ ABSTRACT BELOW:* Keywords: American Indian; Indigenous; Navajo; community-based participatory research; early child education; early child health; sugar-sweetened beverages; water The Water is K'é program was developed to increase water consumption and decrease consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages for young children and caregivers. The pilot program was successfully delivered by three Family and Child Education (FACE) programs on the Navajo Nation using a culturally centered curriculum between 2020 to 2022. The purpose of this research was to understand teacher and caregiver perspectives of program feasibility, acceptability, impact, and other factors influencing beverage behaviors due to the pilot program. Nine caregivers and teachers were interviewed between June 2022 and December 2022, and a study team of four, including three who self-identified as Navajo, analyzed the data using inductive thematic analysis and consensus building to agree on codes. Five themes emerged, including feasibility, acceptability, impact, suggestions for future use of the program, and external factors that influenced water consumption. The analysis showed stakeholders' strong approval for continuing the program based on impact and acceptability, and identified factors that promote the program and barriers that can be addressed to make the program sustainable. Overall, the Water is K'é program and staff overcame many challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic to support healthy behavior change that had a rippled influence among children, caregivers, teachers, and many others. "Why Write?" I remember reading two essays by two prominent authors who took on different approaches to break down the reasons they write. Paul Auster said he writes because it is the most natural thing to him, that he grew up with stories and how stories have become a natural part of his life. John Updike, on the other hand, said he writes because he needs to satisfy a curiosity, expand his thinking processes, and have a better understanding of the world. In short, though, the two authors concluded that one writes both to understand and to be understood. During my internsip at The Atlantic many, many years ago, I remember receiving a letter from the late Michael C. Cunningham after having submitted a short story to him. He said that while he was certain I was a writer, or that I had all the markings of a writer, he was also convinced that I had not lived enough to produce the kind of stories that have the ability to resonate with the readers. I was 20 years old at the time. And it took me a good decade to really understand what he meant. For a long time, I asked myself the same creative question: "Why write?" And the best thing I could come up with was ... I write to understand myself, to see the different worlds within myself which, at times, feel like they are on a collision course toward each other. Being in a room with fellow writers always helps me to manage the anxiety of not having the right answer to the above question. Because, at the end of the day, whether or not I have the answer to the question of why I write, I will be okay and be able to move forward in my journey as long as I continue to sharpen my craft.
