As healthcare costs continue climbing 📈 , insurers are leaning harder into "gap-filler" products like critical illness and hospital indemnity insurance. These plans, designed to help workers manage major medical deductibles and co-pays, saw a 10% sales increase in the first half of 2024, totaling $2 billion. Critical illness premiums jumped 17%, while hospital indemnity policies climbed 12%, according to LIMRA data. Why the surge? More employers (37% for hospital indemnity) are offering these voluntary benefits, as flexible regulations and low-risk margins make them attractive to insurers. Players like Lincoln Financial Group Trust Co Inc and Prudential Financial are doubling down, with Lincoln reporting a twofold sales increase in workplace solutions over the past year. The trend underscores a growing reliance on these policies as workers navigate high-deductible plans. It’s great when a speaker at an event exceeds expectations.    Our Healthcare in Harmony event is designed for our member agencies to invite clients, prospective clients, and referral sources to learn strategies for controlling healthcare costs. It’s wildly successful, and members are driving sales and retention.    This complex problem for employers is not completely solved by self-funding, RX strategies, and all the other tactical items frequently discussed. Because people are involved. Human behavior. Communication. Motivation. Rachel DeAlto talked about being a relatable leader, and it was incredibly well-received. Because we can be innovative, implement long-term strategies, and all feel good about ourselves. But...   People need to have trust in leadership as a foundation for behavior change.    People are not always motivated or inspired how WE (you or me) are motivated and inspired.    Leadership is hard. When I was in Business Development for True Rx Health Strategists, the #1 question I received was, "what should I be asking my PBM partners"? I am proud to share an article by our CEO, Mark Williams with Employee Benefit News around the top questions to ask your current pharmacy insurance provider. The bottom line is, does your pharmacy insurance provider actually care about your employees? Your employees help make the vision of your company possible. Their employment makes it possible to provide for their families, often the insurance for their loved ones. Does your PBM care about their health, how much they are paying for their medicine or how they are treated when they are dealing with a health condition? You have other options.
