Chris French has developed a dashboard that shows data analytics jobs posted by individuals on LinkedIn, not in the jobs sections. With so many places to look, Chris has developed a curation process that not only shows a job posting, but humanizes that job search with a name and face for who posted the job. the little things that will make a big difference! #dataanalytics #datahumanizing #jobsearch #opentowork

I realized something pretty fundamental about SQL that I don't think I've personally ever heard stated explicitly. When you select a column without grouping/aggregation, it's as if you are completely separating this column from the rest of the table and returning it. This may seem obvious. But think about the implications when attempting to select a grouped by column with a non-grouped column SQL will try to return all the data from the non-grouped column and combine it with the grouped data, which will contain less rows. At least in MySQL this does not produce an error, but it will result in incorrect data. To solve select only what you are aggregating and grouping. Then do a self join on the fields that you are aggregating and grouping.

🎨 Artists can become great analysts.   📉 And some analysts are would-be artists who went for a higher probability paycheck.   👂 Out in the wild of LinkedIn and Tableau User Groups, I have twice heard artists-turned-analyst use the phrase "final inking".   🙉 This sounded really, *really* weird to me.   🤔 I asked a director of analytics at my company if they had ever heard the phrase - they had no idea what it meant.   🧠 I figured out what it meant by context each time I heard it, but I had never heard "final inking" at work… and we have 500+ Tableau developers.   ❓ I *think* the original meaning art-wise is to apply ink as a last step over one or more iterations of pencil sketches.   🧹 So what do I call the final aesthetic changes to a viz? This month I’ve been seeing a lot more Data Analyst positions opening up. How long will this last? No one knows. But, this is a sign that even in a volatile Job market opportunities can spring up when least expected. This is why it’s best to stay prepared. Keep your skills sharp, keep your resume updated and remain consistent in your job search. Play around with the terminology. Don’t just search Data Analyst, but also try to search by the skills you acquired. For example type in “Power Bi” in the job boards and see what all roles pop up. You might be surprised what roles come up that don’t necessarily have the title “Data Analyst” Eventually one of these open roles will be sending you an offer letter. This is the time to stay prepared or get prepared. The market will bounce back before you know it.

"I've sent out hundreds of applications for data analyst roles, but so far, crickets." This is the reality for many recent grads, or anyone looking to pivot into a career in data analytics. So, how do you cut through the noise and make your mark in this seemingly oversaturated field?" Get a referral. AI makes it so easy for job seekers to blast out hundreds of job applications each week, which means the competition is great but the quality is bland. Hiring managers are swamped and don't have time to sift through every resume they receive. Genuine referrals are more valuable than ever. Instead of spending time sending out generic applications, spend time building sincere relationships with people you find interesting. Join online groups, attend free conferences, ask coworkers questions. Turn your previous experience into an asset. Do you have experience in Finance? Customer service? Retail? Education? Every industry uses data and has a need for a data analyst. My degree in Civil Engineering played a major part in landing my first data analyst job at a transport service company. Hiring managers are looking for someone who can speak the language of the data and analyse it in the context of the business. Bonus points if you have any industry-specific skills or certifications. I wasted so much time researching the best tools for my first data analyst role. Google, Quora and Reddit were my go-to. Here are some of my search terms: - R Vs Python - which one is better? - Tableau Vs Power BI - which one should I learn? - MySQL Vs Oracle Vs Postgres - which one is the best for beginners? The result? More confusion. I later realised employers didn't care about these tools after I started my first data role. They only cared about results. ____________ Don't waste your time researching the "best tools". Employers don't care about your tech stack. They only care about solutions to problems. 💡 𝐌𝐲 𝐒𝐎𝐐𝐋 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲: 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐒𝐐𝐋 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲💡 Since starting my new role, I’ve been diving deep into SOQL (Salesforce Object Query Language) to bring Salesforce data into Tableau and build powerful visualizations. My goal? To link Salesforce data with Bonafide data and craft a dashboard that really tells a story and drives insights. Coming from an SQL background, I thought learning SOQL would be a quick win—but Salesforce has its own unique way of doing things! It’s been a mix of challenges and rewarding “aha” moments as I get up to speed. Here are some of the most interesting things I’ve learned so far: 🔹 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭-𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 One of the coolest discoveries in SOQL has been understanding child relationships. Unlike SQL, where you’d rely on joins, SOQL lets you pull related child data directly within a parent query using subqueries. It’s a game-changer—now I can gather everything I need about related records in a single query, making my work both faster and more efficient. 🔹 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫'𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡 I have to give a shout-out to Salesforce Developer’s Workbench. This tool has been a lifesaver, helping me test queries and get a clear picture of Salesforce’s data structure. It’s been like a roadmap for navigating Salesforce’s objects and relationships—especially as I connect different tables and dive into complex data. 🔹 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐎𝐐𝐋’𝐬 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 Even with my SQL background, SOQL has taken some getting used to! It doesn’t handle joins the same way, so I’ve had to learn how to use dot notation and subqueries to navigate relationships. It felt a bit like learning a new language, but now I can appreciate how SOQL is tailored for CRM data in a way that’s actually quite intuitive. 🔹 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐚 𝐃𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐛𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 Ultimately, this journey is all about creating a dashboard that brings Salesforce and Bonafide data together in a meaningful way. I want the visuals to go beyond the numbers and offer real insights that drive decisions. It’s taken time and effort, but every query and data connection is one step closer to realizing that vision. Starting this new role has been an incredible learning experience, and it’s reminded me how much I love digging into data and finding better ways to make it come alive.
