Circana reported that while US beauty sales slowed overall, the prestige beauty market grew by 9% in Q1 of 2024. Spending as a whole has slowed. Inflation prices have people restructuring their financial priorities, cutting out unnecessary expenses. Prestige's resilience is partly due to financial capacity - affluent people buying premium products. But, it's something else too. It's natural to want to indulge, even when money is tight. With beauty, that indulgence is a bit more accessible. One purchase will pay off for weeks or even months, depending on the product. Consumers' perception is that they can trust these investments, thanks to the quality and reputation of the prestige brand. They're often returning to a product they've been loyal to for years. Prestige brands can build on that perception for sustained success. The tricky part is differentiation. Competition is hot. 🤔 I review business news from many sectors every morning, especially beauty... and then add in big changes in US cosmetic regulatory environment. This isn't likely isn't a going to be the most desirable of predictions but I expect some big contractions in the beauty industry in coming years. R&D (and product launches) will experience shrink and become more focused but regulatory, quality and analytical chemist positions will become vastly more important. Beauty brands have responded en masse to help solve some of her most pressing concerns. Should Emerging Beauty Brands Be Filling C-Suite Roles Earlier Than Ever? Pleasure contributing to this question, alongside other beauty experts, posed by Rachel Brown of Beauty Independent & inspired by Rich Gersten's, co-founder and managing partner at beauty and wellness venture capital firm True Beauty Ventures, comments at Beauty Independent’s Dealmaker Summit last month, My take: -Timing is everything, meaning don't make the mistake of hiring specialists too soon or too late -Whether the founder wants to/can be a CEO or GM or hire from outside depends on her strengths and inclination around various functions, mainly innovation, finance, marketing and sales. The attributes of indie beauty brand founders exist on spectrum, but can be grouped into four categories: 1. Critical creative designer and formulator: Most indie beauty brand founders are product- and innovation-focused founders with both a short-term and long-term horizon. 2. Finance focused: Fewer indie beauty brand founders are number people. They are more short-term, but not very brand focused. 3. Leader and team builder: Few indie beauty brand founders are generalists who aren’t very hands-on. They’re usually non-formulator/innovation/product founders and more long term. 4. Brand focused: Very few beauty brand founders are designers and storytellers. They understand marketing, but don’t understand sales much and are more long term. If the founder is more of a critical creative or brand focused, but lacks the functional expertise of finance and lacks leadership and team building skills, she needs to hire a CEO or a GM, who is likely to be great with numbers, people and understands omnichannel well. The founder would still need to hire specialists for sales, marketing, finance and innovation. If the founder is more of a leader and team builder or is finance focused, which is not that common in indie/early-stage beauty brand founders, then she can hire functional specialists for sales, marketing and innovation. -Now, a GM is slightly different from a CEO. A GM is responsible for sales and distribution channels mainly and might lack a strong understanding of brand, finance and marketing.  Has anyone noticed the “less is more” trend cascading across the beauty industry? I'm lucky to have conversations with beauty industry experts in retail, brand, contract manufacturing, and custom packaging. They all share similar feedback.  Here are a few highlights of what I've noticed:  💫Refinement of offerings: Consumers want less of a multi-step beauty routine playing into their buying patterns.  💫Fewer bigger, better: Brands are focusing on hero skus and franchises to focus on bigger launches that are quality over quantity.  💫Strategic partnerships.: It's expensive to be in retail, so a targeted strategic focus on the “right” retailers rather than every retailer.  💫Don’t forget hiring: We are seeing a different approach to hiring based on current growth rather than forecasted growth. Hiring for the now, not the future. The business continues to evolve, and the Beauty Executives that I partner with have shifted their strategies: working  with “less” to counter current economic times.
