CHLA Los Angeles County Children's Health Survey 2024 This survey aims to get your opinions about community health issues and the quality of life in Los Angeles County for children and families. Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) will use the survey results in its community health needs assessment (CHNA) to help identify the health needs and the factors that influence the health of Los Angeles (LA) County children and families. CHLA will use information from the CHNA to inform their community health improvement plan so that resource investments can address the most pressing needs identified by the community.   CHLA has engaged Health Management Associates (HMA) to conduct this survey to assure community residents that their feedback is anonymous. HMA will not collect any personally identifiable information, but you will be asked to provide some basic demographic information to help us understand the different experiences and perspectives.   The survey will be open through August 31, 2024, and will take you approximately 15 minutes to complete.    After completing this survey you will be offered a chance to enter into an opportunity drawing for a gift card and an opportunity to participate in a focus group to talk more about your experiences. The transition to a senior living community can be a positive step toward ensuring their safety, health and happiness. Understanding the key indicators can also help us make informed decisions for their well-being. Here are six signs that suggest it might be time to consider the benefits of a senior home for your loved one: 1. Medication errors: When seniors begin to miss doses or forget to take their medications altogether, it can lead to serious health complications. A senior living community offers medication management services to ensure that residents receive their medications correctly and on time, providing peace of mind for both seniors and their families. 2. Poor nutrition: If you notice a loved one skipping meals, relying heavily on microwaved meals or showing signs of dehydration, it’s a clear indicator that nutritional needs are not being met. On May 29th, the USC Norris Office of Community Outreach and Engagement, in collaboration with USC Center for Optimization of Participant Engagement for Cancer Characterization (COPECC), hosted their inaugural DNA Day. The COPECC Center is a member of the Participant Engagement and Cancer Genome Sequencing (PE-CGS) Network, part of the Cancer Moonshot Initiative, that is intended to accelerate cancer research and improve cancer outcomes among Hispanic/Latinx colorectal cancer patients. This event was created to celebrate ENLACE and KABB study participants and give them the opportunity to learn more about the center and studies. The purpose of the ENLACE and KABB studies are to address gaps in knowledge about the cancer characteristics among Hispanic patients with colorectal cancer, and to improve the engagement of Hispanic/Latino/x cancer patients in cancer genomics research, respectively. Participants also had the opportunity to ask questions to better understand the importance of their role in the fight against colorectal cancer. Starting the week-long celebrations of our hospital partners during National Hospital Week, I came across an article that highlights a crisis in our hospitals that is as timely now as it has ever been. According to The Oregonian / OregonLive.com, physicians who staff emergency rooms say that the problem of ER boarding is as bad as it’s ever been. This is even worse than during the first years of the COVID-19 pandemic when hospitals filled with desperately ill patients. While boarding can happen to all ER patients, adults 65 and older, who account for nearly 20% of ER visits, are especially vulnerable during long waits for care. Whether it is caused by staffing shortages or elective surgeries bottlenecking beds, a higher hospital demand and aging US population, or the backlog in discharging patients due to problems securing home health and nursing home care in a timely fashion, one thing is for certain: the impact of long ER waits on seniors who are frail, with multiple medical issues, is especially serious.
