We interviewed Dr. Alaa Youssef, Urban design expert and advisory committee member of Green Build Oman 2024, to gain insight into creating sustainable urban environments. Dr. Alaa explained, “In Oman, most settlements are rapidly expanding in a low-density, scattered pattern with relaxed regulations for completing private developments. This creates gaps within the city, making infrastructure connectivity costly, extending travel distances between work and home, and increasing car usage for daily needs—all contributing to a higher carbon footprint. 🌱 Sustainable development cannot be achieved solely through individual projects like buildings or green spaces. We must study new developments with an integrated approach, bringing together different disciplines within the framework of sustainability. To achieve this, we need to work on several key aspects: public transportation and pedestrian networks, water management and conservation, culture and heritage preservation, green spaces, livable human spaces, waste management, and smart technology at both building and city scales. Urban design’s core focus should be on mixed-use developments that promote walkability and public transit access, reducing car dependency and lowering our carbon footprint. This approach minimizes travel distance between work and home. The trend towards mixed-use areas combining residential, commercial, and recreational spaces is essential for creating livable communities and reducing long commutes. Key Takeaways and Insights: Al-Driven Design and Planning: Al-powered generative design programs can explore thousands of design options in minutes, while also optimizing for factors like energy efficiency and cost - a task that would take humans weeks or months. For instance, Autodesk's generative design software helped create the Bionic Partition for Airbus, which is 45% lighter than traditional designs while maintaining structural integrity. Enhanced Construction Management: Al and machine learning are transforming project management by providing real-time insights that can automatically detect safety hazards, track progress, and even measure stockpiles of materials. For example, Komatsu, a construction equipment manufacturer, uses drones and Al to create 3D maps of construction sites, updating progress daily and detecting potential issues before they become problems. Proactive Maintenance and Facility Management: Al is revolutionizing how we maintain and manage buildings through the use of digital twins - virtual replicas of physical assets. "I continue to value my license both in terms of my personal effort to achieve it, and the responsibility I continue to hold in operating under it," one reader shared. "I do, however believe that there should be other means through which one could achieve and obtain the 'minimum professional competence' which licensure is supposed to demonstrate." "We are producing far too many architects in the definition of licensed professionals. The current method is destroying the profession in the light of overall responsibility within the built environment," said another commenter. "I have 14 years experience, the lack of license has me perceived as a deadbeat, with low career progression as compared to my less experienced but more successful co-workers who get the breaks- I ask for tasks that lead to licensure.
