Now that our HIT industry has spent nearly 40 years figuring out how to effectively pass data between sites, settings, and institutions of care (and while that journey isn't completely over, we're well on our way), we can finally turn and look farther down the road and consider what's next. In my view, advancing process consistency, agility, and change is that horizon. The BPM community is focused on that challenge, and having recently transitioned into HL7 as HL7 BPM, is squarely trying to take this on. With today's press release, HL7 is truly open-for-business in this space. Thanks to the OMG for nurturing this work along and for HL7 for having made our next home for this effort. Healthcare Reinvention: Beyond Digital Transformation to Deliver Outcomes by Design Healthcare faces critical challenges: provider shortages, rising costs, access issues, and an aging population. Despite decades investing in digital transformation, process optimization, incremental innovation, and technology, organizations have struggled to deliver expected value and ROI (outcomes, efficiencies and cost-effectiveness). Even the recent push for AI adoption has not generated the expected value. The problem may lie in the approach. The old processes were digitized without changing the underlying models, behaviors, and rules that drive current processes. More time is spent on the technology than asking why things are done and how they could be done.  A push to standardize has stifled entrepreneurship. It’s time to reimagine better ways to create value. The paradigm shift is from “transformation” to reinvention. Reinvention requires: 1. Questioning every aspect of the current model and our actions, 2. Reimagining staff utilization along with facility and resource needs, 3. Rethinking policies to incentivize better outcomes, 4. Using data as the core asset across the care continuum and each patient’s journey. Successful reinvention requires more than implementing new technologies. It demands: Starting with clearly defined outcomes and goals, Developing business plans with actions and measurable objectives, Removing unnecessary tasks and non-value-add activities, Embracing disruption to achieve transformative change (>25% improvement from baseline), Investing in proven change management so change is seen as an asset, not a barrier. Technology is an essential enabler but should never be the primary focus. Significant improvements in outcomes and productivity can be achieved without new technology. GenAI and emerging technologies offer potential value, but only when/if applied strategically to reimagined processes and care models. Reinvention cannot occur in silos. Separating digital health from traditional health or virtual from in person care negates the potential value of truly reimagined healthcare operations. A Virtual First Mindset can accelerate reinvention, create access, expand capacity, and reduce cost while improving patient and staff satisfaction. Requiring some disruption, reinvention will deliver immediate value to all stakeholders while empowering everyone to contribute to ongoing improvements. Having a Rapid Response Plan, not only for your security operations center, but also for your enterprise leadership team, is invaluable when the tough stuff happens.
