We gathered dozens of operators from the MGMT Boston Operators Club and local founders alongside the 186 Ventures team this October to discuss the evolution of our dear software markets, the status of some predictions for 2024 (all looking good!), and what’s on deck for next year. General Partner Giuseppe Stuto led us through the following predictions for 2025 to share with you all.. ↕ We will see more vertical AI applications manifest themselves within the Enterprise in a similar ways that SaaS moved from horizontal to vertical use cases 🔔 We will see services business models more common and software budget purchasing models less common - SaaS may even be given away for cheap/free as a “way in” ⚖ Capital efficiency, on a relative basis, will almost be required to create enduring & compounding defensible enterprise value. Details like procurement cycle lengths and creativity with non-dilutive financing, like leveraging revenue based financing tools for example, will all matter 💡 Specific to AI, premiums will be placed on applications that can actually get “reasoning” right. All purpose LLMs still have a ways to go and there are multiple approaches with the “jury still out” on how to get context and reasoning right. Infrastructure solutions that use general purpose or customizable knowledge graphs to help application developers get to 100% (enterprise acceptable accuracy) will emerge OR savvy application developers will fill the gaps themselves. But it’s always a good time to ask questions! When a member of your team comes to you and says “we really need to build X feature”, they’re coming to you for good reason. Dig into the why to understand how often the issue comes up, when it happens in a customer conversation, and why they’re asking for it in the first place. Is there an even better way to build a solution? Also, people are always excited about getting to a solution. By delaying the solution discussion to first get everyone to agree on the problem, you can coordinate a better response. Sharon has been in rooms where stakeholders can’t agree on the problem they’re trying to solve, which can sometimes be even more painful! By asking better questions and articulating the underlying issues thoroughly, they can work together as an organization to chart a better path forward. 3 Career Insights / Learnings 🙋‍♀️ Seek New Challenges - “Trying new things is how you learn and grow. At a startup, there are so many opportunities to try new things. As startups evolve, you need to embrace all that’s going to happen and make it a positive thing. How you treat people and how you show up every day will impact your work environment. You’re responsible for the energy you bring to the room, so be authentic and try to inject some positivity. Good news! The startup market is getting better here in Boston (and beyond). And other news... The venture capital ecosystem has been slowly picking up steam since the spring. You're seeing it in a bigger way this fall and there is more to come. Just in the past few weeks locally.. -Insurtech startup Herald announced a $10M Series A -Agency AI launched with $12M from Sequoia Capital -Vizit announced a $25M Series B fundraise I'm surely forgetting some....and there's more on the way! The other news? Capital efficiency means something very different in this new cycle. With the explosion in tooling, startups are going to be looking even harder at adding new headcount. Org charts will change. I talked to a company last week that grew by double digits every single quarter this year and...didn't add any new team members. As Simon Taylor says, you need to earn your seat every day. In this market, that is going to take on a whole new meaning!

Some Founders excel while others stumble. And it's not because of their professional knowledge. It's for their lack of soft skills! Last week, I had the privilege of attending the TechCrunch Early Stage event in Boston. It was a full immersion among entrepreneurs of any age and experience, like myself. I talked to many of them: many fantastic, energetic, enthusiastic, creative, visionary founders who bring their ideas, products, and services to make this world a better place (I am one of them 😁). One takeaway is that I understood that honing soft skills is very often considered "less important" than finding a product market fit or managing finances. And yet, that's why many startups fail! Here are 10 soft skills that everyone should cultivate: ✔ Self-awareness: Beyond appearance, understanding your strengths, weaknesses, leadership style, and what motivates you is the only way to grow in the right direction. ✔ Listening: Master the art of making people feel heard (and avoid epic marketing blunders). ✔ Difficult conversations: No one likes having difficult conversations, but they are inevitable—with a cofounder, a team member, or the whole team. They can make the difference between success and crash! ✔ Emotional Intelligence: Understanding your team's emotions builds trust and avoids unnecessary drama. ✔ Honesty: Transparency is the only way to build bridges, even in difficult moments. ✔ Positive attitude: Stay positive, prioritize ruthlessly, and tackle challenges head-on (warning: I am not talking about blind optimism). ✔ Teamwork: Humility is key to building a positive company culture. Celebrate wins, fails, and everything in between together! ✔ Change management: The startup world throws curveballs. Don't fall in love with your idea, and be ready to pivot and adjust. ✔ Sincerity: People see through fakeness. Be genuine and connect with your team on a human level. ✔ Communication: It's not just about your pitch. You might have the best idea and vision, but if you are not convincing, no one will follow. Yesterday I had dinner with ~20 impressive founders ($100MM+ in enterprise value!). 😮 And most were surprised to know beforehand I was sweating bullets....😟 One of the best parts of living in NYC is getting the opportunity to meet amazing founders, building in spaces that may have no connection to yours. One started a viral AI girlfriend doing over $2MM in profit, someone sold two businesses to publicly traded companies, another created the worlds largest Minecraft server. My friend Andrew Yeung throws these incredible dinners for founders where there are REAL conversations and NO selling. (Refreshing I know) And over the years I've been to many networking type events. But what most don't realize is even though I may seem calm and collected on the outside, before these events, I'm usually very nervous. Until I DM'd Nick Gray who told me 4 things about how to tackle these events and feel more yourself. 1. Show up EARLY - open up your google maps, see the time it will take to reach, and double it. Thats when you should start. To kick the anxiety of meeting people starts with going there well before time. 2. Meet the organizers - they WANT everyone to have a good time! When you go early, ask them if you can help with anything, and get to know them as people. 3. Understand WHY are you anxious - for me, a lot of this has to do with how I want to be perceived. I didn't want to be the guy who was standing by himself, with his drink. And that's ok and totally normal to feel! But understanding WHY you are feeling anxious is important to find a way to overcome it. 4. It's totally fine to join in on a conversation - a simple "can I join you all?" is all it takes to now jump into the mix. *Bonus* 5. If this is how you are feeling, think about how YOU can make someone feel more comfortable! See someone standing by themselves? Go talk to them! Remember that it is no ones intention to make you feel excluded. But YOU need to make connecting with others a priority. Are you nervous before meeting new people? What tips help ease the anxiety?

This week's topic: ✨What makes thriving and resilient IRL communities? 6 Building Blocks we came up with - 🔥Purposeful ✨Active & Connected 🛠️Well-resourced 💪 Capable 🌱Evolving 🤝Build with (the community and not for them) Oh wait, is this yet another community framework! Why! We heard the top challenges of hundreds of IRL builders and searched - books, blogs, research papers, case studies, checklists. There are incredible frameworks out there that focus on community philosophy and design principles. But none dug into the practical IRL stuff builders were asking us such as business model, logistics, tools. The goal We don’t want to re-create any knowledge. Rather, we want to - Frame the crucial questions our builders are struggling with - Create a common language for the accelerator sessions - Build a shared understanding of what excellent looks like - Be action-oriented (a guide and not a researcher) - Be an accessible entry point for exploring deeper research, best practices & other frameworks What do you think?
