When it comes to functional beverages, the energy and weight management segments are leading the pack, according to NielsenIQ's Jordan Moore, who spoke at ECRM's Center Store Sessions recently and was interviewed by Joseph Tarnowski on some key takeaways from her presentation. Overall, the functional beverage segment (which NIQ considers any beverage that makes a wellness claim) is growing 2 percent faster that RTDs. Energy beverages, which are already a $22 billion category, have seen 10 percent growth vs. a year ago, and weight management beverages, which include those beverages aimed at helping consumers gain muscle as well as speeding up their metabolism and losing weight, are up a whopping 22 percent. Interestingly, protein is making its way into an increasingly diverse array of beverages outside of traditional protein shakes, including coffee (like the new Instant Coffee with Protein by Fire Department Coffee, and the new Genepro Tea). Some functional beverage categories are declining, however. Those under the preventative segment, which focus on brain health, probiotics and immunity is down 8 percent and diabetes related beverages are down 6 percent. Not all is lost though, if you are in one of these segments. While the overall segment may be down, your specific category may be on the rise. A case-in-point is kombucha. While it falls under the preventative segment, the category itself is up 5 percent. The US Beer industry landscape is changing fast. AB InBev's North America Normalized EBIT declined by over $1.3 B from 2022 to 2023. The volume market share decline (relative to Molson Coors Beverage Company and Constellation Brands) contributed to that EBIT decline by an amount of $400 Million. It has not helped that overall volumes between these three major players has declined by over 4%. It's a general sign of the headwinds facing the beer category as shopper and consumer preferences shift. For #ABInBev, that overall market decline cost them another $200M. A just less than 4% increase in Net Pricing contributed a +ve $560Million to the Normalized EBIT change, but was insufficient to mitigate the increased inflationary unit costs associated with Cost of Sales and the de-leveraging of other SG&A operating expenses. It will be interesting to track how these components of EBIT will change for 2024, given growth constraints associated with market share gains and price increase ceilings. Looks like some drastic OPEX cuts might be the only short-term remedy for now as AB InBev looks to rebuild brand equity and volume share. While GLP-1s are all the buzz among consumers, shoppers at Florida's Nutrition Smart stores are seeking natural alternatives that can deliver similar weight loss results -- without the risk of side effects, according to Category Manager Joe Geier, who spoke with Joseph Tarnowski at ECRM's recent Vitamin, Weight Management & Sports Nutrition Session. Nutrition Smart offers natural foods and supplements and caters to a market of wellness oriented 40- to 65-year-olds, primarily women, as well as some younger gym crowds. In addition to avoiding potential side effects, many of these shoppers are looking to avoid prescriptions altogether, preferring to find clean and natural solutions. For weight loss, these include glucose-control supplements like berberine and sucontrol, along with specific dietary changes they address on the food side of the store. Most are looking for cleaner ingredients as well. Geier notes that social media has had a huge impact on shoppers' purchasing decisions, and many will come to him with screenshots from wellness influencers posts or podcasts that discuss specific nutritional supplements, and he tries to follow many of these influencers to try and stay ahead of the trends.
