Fellow Hiring Managers, Be a knife collector! A Swiss Army Knife collector to be specific. In 2024 when AI has memorized every coding language, you should be looking for a software engineer who can pickup a new language over the weekend and make something with it vs a coder who has memorized 0.000001 of what AI has. Look at their accomplishments and if you give them a coding challenge, don't look for immediate proficiency, instead look for adaptability. Have them code in a language new to them but don't do it over their shoulder. Your software engineers need to be Swiss army knives, not encyclopedias. We have AI for that now.

Carta's data is ....off? Coastal Recruiting communicates with hundreds of engineers weekly, primarily in New York and San Francisco. We consistently encounter software engineers with 2-6 years of experience requesting base salaries between $180,000 and $250,000, plus equity. Perhaps "misleading" is a better term, as I frequently hear founders saying, "But Carta indicates we can hire this engineer for $140,000 to $160,000." We then observe Seed/Series A companies paying $200,000 to $300,000 for top talent. The disconnect may stem from the fact that companies raising funds from Sequoia, Khosla, Founders Fund, Lightspeed, a16z, KP, Greylock, Index, NEA, Lux, and others are not seeking what 95% of the companies providing data to Carta are seeking. These companies are looking for the top 0.01% of engineers. I say all this while also acknowledging my appreciation for Carta. I value the data and charts it provides, but it's important to remember: "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."

Senior Devs / Hiring Managers—during our live webinar yesterday, we polled a few hundred recent Comp Sci grads. 60% didn’t feel that they had enough experience in Java to qualify for an enterprise coding job. Instead they’d been pointed towards Python. 80% had no experience with Unit Testing. I know Comp Sci isn’t just about software engineering; but it’s by far the largest number of available jobs for grads. If jobs are the metric that Higher Ed is judged on, this seems like a huge failure. Does this line up with your experience? How are you dealing with this skills gap when you look to onboard junior talent?

Reading about the CAP theorem in distributed systems. Some posts online claim to have systems that achieve consistency and availability - is this possible, if so, how? I read an article from Coda Hale called "you can't sacrifice partition tolerance" - link in the comments.
