So Delaware wants to be a “tech hub” 🏙️, but here’s the reality check: according to Code.org's 2024 State of Computer Science Education Report, only 61% of high schools here offer computer science 🖥️, and less than 6% of students are actually signing up. Meanwhile, neighboring states like Maryland and New Jersey are way ahead—fully funded 💸, with state plans 📜, and higher enrollment numbers. And what about the younger kids? We’re handing out Chromebooks in elementary school 📲, but where’s the computer science education to go with them? Kids are using tech every day but aren’t getting the skills they need to understand it, build with it, or innovate for the future. 🌐 If we’re serious about preparing our kids—and Delaware—for a tech-driven future 🚀, it’s time to go beyond talk and invest in computer science at every grade level. f your organization’s default system development lifecycle methodology is agile ⚡️, I believe that is a MAJOR mistake. 🫥 Most organizations or enterprises do not neatly fit into either a purely waterfall 💧 or agile ⚡️ approach when it comes to software development. Why? Waterfall 💧 Approach ➡️ Provides clear milestones and predictable timelines but limited client involvement until late stages. I recently had a great conversation with Umair Abid from Event Temple who described the shift from Senior to Staff+ as a move toward juggling multiple projects, unblocking others, increasing PR reviews, and advocating for the engineers within his company. Our conversation reminded me of something Fernando Botelho an Engineering Director at Thinkific wrote recently, "I wouldn’t depend on my manager to set a destination and lay out a path for me and my team so I could keep my focus on the work right in front of me." At the Staff+ level, when you're balancing supporting multiple projects and team members, it can be challenging to know how much time to dedicate to each one. Here are a few tips that I’ve found to help manage this balance: Prioritize by Impact: Focus on the projects and tasks that have the most significant impact on your team and company. This ensures that your time is spent where it’s most valuable. Delegate Strategically: Empower your team by delegating tasks that can help them grow, while allowing you to focus on higher-level strategic work. Set Clear Boundaries: Establish boundaries for your time, ensuring that you allocate specific hours to each project. This prevents any one project from consuming all your attention. Regular Check-Ins: Schedule regular check-ins with your teams to stay updated and address any blockers. This keeps you informed without needing to micromanage. Umair Abid also shared that he has a strong preference for working with products that allow for iteration, rather than contract work and this is something I resonated with, as my early career involved purely contract work too. It's from a long ago article in The New Yorker and it's about Gene Kranz, the flight controller for the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission. Hey company executives, no one is saying that CSMs are responsible for making life or death decisions but how Kranz described his job sounds awfully similar to how some pressure-cooked CSMs talk about the loneliness of theirs. Monday musing: air travel has six 9s uptime vs. three or four 9s uptime for cloud service providers and one 9 (?) for GenAI accuracy. I’m grateful for this mature, everyday technology that two owners of a bike shop pioneered 121 years ago - and that generations of innovators made it increasingly reliable over the years. Some numbers of interest: > A plane has a 1 in 5.4 million chance of going down per flight. Hence my six 9s estimate (and feel free to correct the math!) > A plane passenger has a 1 in 13 million chance of dying in a crash. > Cloud service providers have about three 9s availability SLAs.
